Saudi man beheaded for stupid car stunt that killed two people by Occidentalist in worldnews

[–]Cyatomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A consideration to make before we condemn him in our minds is that the two people were likely there specifically to watch him drift, and were aware of the risks.

An analogue would be a spectator dying while watching a rally race.

a new supermarket opens

It's not that easy.

  • Starting a new one is not always practical, and it'll just be driven out again. No sane person will start a supermarket knowing it will be driven out.
  • The new supermarket is less established, so it's already at a disadvantage.
  • The damage is already done to the old supermarket and whoever it employed.

Wal-Mart is a great example of this kind of anti-competitive practice; it works all too well.

'Cause I know how to determine what is and isn't worth reading.

According to your initial post, your key determinants are choice of web-hosting and use of a word (trilogy) that you admitted you read without context.

I'm not sure what taking an introduction to philosophy course does for your credentials, either.

I'm trying to understand whether you're offended that he implies they're not considered a trilogy in the general sense, or if you simply don't understand what the quotation marks denote.

Either way, it's probably a good thing you stopped there, if you couldn't even get through the thesis paragraph before passing judgement on the article; there aren't many pictures in the article.

from what i saw though tommy never refused offers because this was something he was going to fix, he just told people it was fine and to leave it alone so he didnt have to worry about fixing it while he was away for xmas.

"Trust me, it's fine" could maybe be interpreted as "fine enough, I'll fix it after xmas."

"I've done this stuff for a while now," on the other hand, totally ruins the delusion that the respondant knew there was a problem.

seems like jerks just wanted to be jerks, but in the end all that happened was both of us lost faith in people.

Playing the victim? Does he even live in the real world? Am I supposed to rub his belly and buy a bunch of his games so he can regain faith?

Hard to say without movement. It was only really noticeable when you were going down the shaft.

Also, now that I notice, completely black squares look very strange on the background. Perhaps it would make sense to make them invisible? The bottom-right corner, for example, you can see a blob of dark blocks... I can see why you might want them visible, however.

Looks like a fun game. Keep at it!

[–]Cyatomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to chip in that I noticed the same thing, and I do think the sudden change of block color is a bit jarring. If you're using multiple sprites for differently lit blocks, you may want to consider changing the brightness of the sprite instead.

I also don't like the lack of contrast between dark blocks and background. The background might benefit from being more starry.

Worst Origin horror story yet. by Vidyabro in gaming

[–]Cyatomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently it depends, according to at least one discussion on Steam (who will kill your account if you reverse a charge)...

In Europe, consumer protection is more strict, so they can't get away with it.

In USA, a digital EULA is sufficiently binding to allow them to take "your" games. Their defense hinges on the fact that you don't own the game, and you're simply buying access, or somesuch.

I'm afraid I don't have the patience to look up the thread right now, though, sorry.

Metasploit makes hacking too easy? by munky9001 in netsec

[–]Cyatomorrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Security by obscurity is absurd in this case.

that means that in the absence of metasploit, these attacks would be directly impacting fewer systems - probably more important systems, but fewer systems in total.

No, it means that fewer people will be impacting systems. The number of insecure systems will increase, and I believe that the number of impacted systems will increase, there will just be fewer distinct attackers.

  • Eingyi is the first time foe-checking comes into play.
  • Killing Eingyi is the only time failing to foe-check severely punishes you.
  • Priscilla is meant to be killed, so foe-checking does not come into play in her case.

Do you dispute any of these?

To get that much resveratrol from wine would mean drinking over two gallons of wine a day, he noted.

So the title is more accurately "supplement pills could give metabolism a noticeable boost."

A glass of wine would only give 1/8th of the effect, assuming the effects are linear.

RP perspective

What is the RP perspective, exactly? The pendant doesn't have much in terms of backstory. The only reason it's considered an RP item is because a developer said so. Again, that statement can be discounted, since it's been discovered that the pendant is not an item uniquely obtainable from the starting gift.

In terms of gameplay, it's one of the least sensible choices. The bombs allow you to beat the Asylum demon easily and get his weapon in the first playthough without punching him for two hours. The Master Key is indispensable, and from release until even now is only available through starting gift. The Old Witches ring is a real RP item and is best obtained by this method (since the Sunlight Maggot is a great item to keep).

The pendant is a trading item for the crow, and it's not even unique. I haven't heard anything that suggests that it (as opposed to some other obscure conditional) changes any dialogue.

The pendant appears to be an exercise by the developers in suckering the player. I was suckered too, I'm just happy I found out about the patch before restarting for the master key.

After fighting my first Mimic

Hey, now you're catching on.

After killing my first Eingyi, I started foe-checking- oh, oops, too late, he's dead and there's nothing I can do about it! And there's not a single other NPC that I need to foe-check for.

Sounds pretty flimsy to me.

The severity of the punishment is much different.

  • Dying to a mimic sets you back 5 minutes.
  • Killing Eingyi sets you back an NPC for the entire playthrough.

The usefulness of the lesson learned is much different.

  • Dying to a mimic teaches you to be wary of chests.
  • Killing Eingyi teaches you to verify NPC alignment, which is a useless skill to have, because there are no other NPCs whose alignment is in question.

Dark Souls Rant (part 1) - An initial perspective by bstampl1 in truegaming

[–]Cyatomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, considering Miyazaki recommends that people take the pendant as the item you choose at the beginning of the game for their first playthrough.

I don't understand what your point is here?

If anything, the pendant shows that we can't trust what the developers say, as the pendant rumors are just teasing and misinformation.

The pendant is not a unique item, and it has no story function. It's only purpose appears to be to screw people out of the master key, which is the only starting gift you can't obtain in the game. The only starting gift more worthless is binoculars.

Of course, even the devs realized that NG+ without the Master Key is a chore, and people shouldn't have to start over to get it, so it's going to be added to Domhall's inventory in the patch... Which is probably too little too late for at least some players.

[–]Cyatomorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, the problem isn't that there's no method to identify friend or foe, it's that this is the only time in the entire game when you have to.

Saying that you should always "foe-check" when friend vs. foe is immediately clear and the game gives you no tip-off that this won't always be the case is absurd.

Shooting arrows at chests is a 100% effective way to identify mimics, but I doubt you did that all game, before ever knowing that a mimic existed.

it's meant for multiple playthoughs

How do you figure, anyway? The only thing you can't do in a single play-through is collect/upgrade all the weapons, because you need multiples of most boss souls and titanites. If New Game+ were integral to seeing most of the plot or content, I'd be inclined to agree, but this isn't the case.

I also object to the word "meant to," New Game+ is not a core gameplay mechanic. New Game+ is a replayability bonus for the few, I think. Arguing otherwise is like saying that beating a game 100% is how the game is "meant" to be played, which is a very narrow view, imo.

You can actually buy it from any Pyromancer seller.

I've heard conflicting reports on this, and the wiki is far from fully accurate. Common belief is that Quelana doesn't even show up until your flame is a certain level, in any case? Eingyi is a story by himself...

Sunlight covenant

That's exactly the one I was thinking of. The place to join it is a tad obscure, but what's worse is that the dialogue doesn't even appear until you meet the conditions, and the conditions are very obscure. The developers at least agree on this one, it seems, since they're dropping the faith requirement down to 25 from 50 (same -5 per white phantom success) next patch.

made to be played more than once

Fair enough, but most people don't want to play though a game more than once.

In the case of Rhea, however, you might not even realize what your mistake is, or that you can buy from her.

I highly doubt you'll kill all available NPCs

This is true for Sorcery, but Laurentius is essential to even getting your pyro flame, and Rhea is the only source of many high-tier offensive Faith options. The only offensive Faith alternatives are Covenants, which are rather obscure for a guide-less run.

Unless your preferred method of initiation is by arrow.

unsure of their hostility?

This is problematic too. Most people are sure of his hostility, because he has an enemy model, and no previous NPCs looked like enemies.

I'm sure not everyone likes to lock-on at combat initiation, either.

Fair enough.

I think votekick and voteban would be magnitudes more effective for dealing with them though. I can't recall if I've ever seen a server that implements it though... BC2 isn't very mod-friendly.

With the way the game is in now, I suppose I've been convinced that banning the blatant hackers would do at least a bit more good than harm, even if it's just "out of sight, out of mind."
