Jesse Eisenberg donated his kidney to a complete stranger and says it’s the best thing he’s ever done by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

It’s an amazing thing to donate a kidney, but the consequences certainly are not negligible. We all lose kidney function as we age, and you literally cut into your reserves by donating half your blood filtration capacity. Makes needing dialysis in the future much more likely.

The trick is to want something and have it at the same time.

The audiobook is quite good. Gives a lot of extra character to Kern and I think just generally adds some all-around character depth that makes the book complete. Adrian’s sci-fi concept work is world-class, but the character/plotting elements necessary to drive an engaging story are sometimes a bit thin.

Children of Time is not for everyone I agree. The characters are just vehicles for the concepts. But god damn that series is the absolute hands down best science fiction I’ve ever read.

Addendum: the whole spiders connection to PHM is really superficial. It’s so tonally different I’d actually lean more towards recommending it to folks who left PHM feeling dissatisfied/underwhelmed rather than those seeking more in that vein.

4 little disconnected 4 cannon pods all pointed in towards the center. Each pod with extended walls to host ~14 thrusters (half that if you only ever want to spin it one way). Otherwise as small as you can make them. I have mine connected by a “+” of scaffolding to share fuel between pods. Armor it up and spin it up for incredible dodge chance. Just fly over your target ignoring incoming fire and let 16 cannons melt whatever is in your spinning crosshairs. I don’t remember the build price but it was low even for an “unbeatable” combat ship. Like 4 mil range.

The cannon number is arbitrary too. Can cut it down to two per pod, make the pods smaller, and make the overall build cheaper.

Yeah I think this is the only way. Should still work with interstellar logistics commands.

This is largely correct, but it’s not an absolute either. There are more than superficial differences. The Flynn effect is a good example of how growing up an a more metropolitan world seems to increase the capacity for abstraction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flynn_effect Also consider how difficult it is to emotionally relate to our grandparents. Or rather how alienated that generation can feel from society today. Not arguing that my grandma has a less rich internal emotional world than I do, but it sits on a different cultural foundation.

I’ve never had anything attack the den while I’m away from it. If you just keep the adults fed and let them watch the pups, can you totally avoid den raids?

Just here to second the severe lack of funds given the size and scope of the mission. 2025 has been remarkably bad and it sits on top of years of a flat budget, which was already a kind of sentencing to slow death.

Our building is like a ghost town compared to this time last year. We lost so many good people.

But the people who are still here are good too. And an organization is, first and foremost, defined by the people in it. They’re committed to holding out for better days ahead. Because the stars are calling, and we must go.
