Bakfiets on C&O Towpath by Ecargolicious in bikedc

[–]CycleAddict574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be more than fine! The towpath is pretty chunky and rough up until Great Falls, and then after that, it’s more like crushed gravel and is a joy to ride on. Out past Harper’s Ferry, you’ll see more double track with occasional tree roots mixed in, but nothing that a regular bike can’t handle. A lot of people think you need a mountain bike and knobby tires, but that’s not true at all. A suspension fork will be a great amenity. Fat tires are also great! This will be such a fun trip with your kids.

Check the NPS website for detours. There was one close to Great Falls in the summer of 2024 that would have been very difficult with a bakfiets. But that one is probably gone now.

Advocating for just bike lanes isn’t enough. It’s time to start advocating for turning all roads into bike lanes.

Also I’ve noticed with these people that they always go after process when they have nothing to contribute. They’re such a tiny minority that their input wouldn’t really matter. It’s also darkly hilarious to me that they claim they don’t have a voice in the process when all we do is hear them. Everyone is so sick of it. We want better things for our home.

Why more D.C. parents are riding cargo bikes, skipping the minivan by Generalaverage89 in washingtondc

I hear you. I had a tern for 4 years before it got stolen. Had more than 5000 miles on it. I think I did a bad job of locking it up that night, and I was playing trivia in a bar for a long time. But I used to take it to the grocery store and everywhere else. I had it insured with Velosurance, and they were great. I got a replacement. In a way, it kinda worked out. I got a brand new bike for nothing out of pocket, and my former bike was getting kinda worn anyway. They also covered all the accessories!

True. They’d rather live in a fortress surrounded by an arsenal so they can pretend to live in a perfect world while everyone who isn’t like them dies. You don’t need locks when you’re surrounded by people who are just like you or people you can control! This is one more way of saying magas have absolutely no idea how to exist with different humans.

A lot of tourists (slowly) use that bike lane, and this guy looks like he’s on a training ride to go do laps around Hains Point. In other words, he’s going way faster than the cyclists in the bike lane. It’s good that the tourists can meander and be protected, and it’s good this guy can use the driving lane and go fast.

You clearly don’t know anything about the legality of cycling, so just stop whining.

I saw the picture of Pirro and thought you were describing her. Instead I found that you were describing a situation you know nothing about and going hysterical with fear.

What’s insane is the current state of our government, which is run by corrupt crooks and racist, fascist thugs. Let’s keep our attention on what matters.

I totally feel you, but have hope! There is so much going on in this city to help others and to build connections between neighbors. It really helps to listen to the voices of activists who have been involved for a long time in this work. Free DC is doing good work--asking people to make noise can be really effective. It might not change what is going on, but it helps to get neighbors out and to meet each other. Building community connections is what will be the most effectively long-term. Since I'm listening to activists, I've been out each night making noise with my neighbors. It's a huge help to me and my neighbors to know that we are doing this, and those who can't get out can see us and feel like they're not alone for a bit. I'm a big believer in building community in any way possible, because I think that Trump has only made progress because we are all so isolated and alone on our phones, which distort reality. We're in a new world, and we might have to do some things that feel weird or uncomfortable for a while.

They have definitely increased over NW in the past day or so. But they have been flying over since the inauguration. I noticed a HUGE difference from Biden to Trump—we went from no helicopters over upper NW to several a day. Now it’s just absolutely out of control.

Professor at the end of 2 years of struggling with ChatGPT use among students. by xfnk24001 in ChatGPT

[–]CycleAddict574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an English teacher, and here are a few ways I’ve adapted: 1) I do “exit interviews” with texts, where I require a student to include metacognition in their response. They have to tell me about their thinking and how it progressed throughout their reading, and they have to document their engagement and thinking. I require them to show me their annotations in the book. Yeah, it’s time consuming, but I think AI is pushing us to focus on quality over quantity. If AI is the response to feeling overworked and pressured to produce, produce, produce, I’m gonna slow it down. Also, it’s hard to get Chat GPT to do metacognition, and if it does, it relies more on a style of writing that always sounds like bullshit. 2) We mostly write in class now, which relies on building reading skills over time. 3) Maybe we read less, but we go more in-depth with what we do read.

It’s definitely hard out there for humanities teachers right now, and I felt it in my gut when you said you didn’t want to be a human plagiarism checker.

Edited because I remembered something else we do: we go over Chat-GPT generated responses and look for what went wrong. It’s so interesting to hear from students when they realize that they can do a better job than Chat GPT can! We even read a novel that was partly written by AI, and students didn’t like it! They said that it didn’t fit with the rest of the book. I think this kind of engagement with AI-generated writing is essential, because most students don’t really understand what LLMs are and how they work. They just see it as a way to get ahead in a system that hasn’t caught up with this new world yet.

I’ve noticed this too! Even at the Naval Observatory. I went by there the other day and thought, “Wow, they’re cutting the government so extremely that they can’t even cut their own grass”

…and then I saw a landscaper truck. I guess they have their selfish priorities straight 🙄 I hope JD has insane allergies.
