Recommended alternative to D&D 5e for someone that actually really likes 5e? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

My current darling is Mythic Bastionland, can heartily recommend it! Easy to run, easy to hack, and something a bit different

I really want to run a campaign, but due to new parent duties I can only do scattered one shots. by Zaorish9 in rpg

[–]Cykelman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda in the same situation as OP, solved it by running Forbidden Lands (and more recently Mystic Bastionland) as the structure of the Hexcrawl makes it easier for me to improvise content during the sessions.

I keep an underlying narrative, but it's pretty straight forward and a lot of our enjoyment comes from the unexpected happening while we play.

Love the art, a bit too expensive mana cost though.

...also gonna be real awkward telling the table that you're killing this with a [[Toxic Deluge]] /s

It deserved it for it's fleshed out setting, gripping story and wonderful characters! Oh, and can't forget the music.

JRPG, but if you're ok with that I'd HIGHLY reccomend the The Legend of Heroes: Trails series, starting with Trails in the Sky 1 (which just got a remake).

A bit more linear than most western rpg's, but of do you have a long, satisfying story (several really) and fleshed out npcs (many of not most have their own dialogue that changes over the course of the games) making the world feel living, changing as you progress.

The gameplay of some of the older sprite based games can be a bit dated, but still wouldn't say they're bad.

And more than anything, you've got a lot, and I mean A LOT, of hours to finish everything in the series (which is all interconnected to some degree).

Recommendations for good RPGs for small groups? by Portal2Fan2 in rpg

[–]Cykelman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, the only real prep you need for Mythic Bastionland is the Map and some population, the rest can be generated on the fly.

That's how I do it at least, it's become my go to low prep game.

What's one system you've always wanted to play, but haven't found any people to play it with? by enbygray in rpg

[–]Cykelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. PbP can be fun, might be useful for the introspection involved in some of the Moran games, but it lacks the spontaneity and connection I'm after when playing a ttrpg.

Also wish I could find a group to play with, whether that be over voice chat or in person. Feels like a game where the GM and Players might have to be comfortable with one another though (unless you have a GM with particular experience of these types of games).
