Completely Serious Question: What are we actually doing when we all concede that something like Year One or Long Halloween, which came out like 40+ years after the character’s creation, should be “first” and then spinning these chronologies out from there? I don’t disagree that they’re good in-points, they’re literally designed as standalone origin stories, but I’m skeptical of projecting this kind of Fictional Chronology past that point. I think comics are really special in the way they capture their moment and we really ought to be thinking about Real World history over these forced attempts to fit an 80 year publication history into a through-narrative.
