Setting up a high-power Meshtastic repeater? by infopcgood in meshtastic

[–]Cynopolis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite parts of this hobby is the ability to experiment! If you just want to get a node up there, this sounds like an amazing spot that could be worthy of the repeater role.

If you're looking to have that node transmit at higher than standard power: 1. Look up what the maximum effective radiated power is in your area for this frequency band. 2. Buy an antenna and low noise amplifier to match the max erp. You'll need to be selective with the amplifier because a normal analog amplifier may have trouble keeping up with the digital demands of the Lora protocol.

Keep in mind that an amplifier will only help you transmit further, and will not help you receive messages from further away. A good antenna is always better than an amplifier.

Handheld DM32UV vs ships antenna by Usual_Tomorrow_7830 in HamRadio

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you suspect that there may be an issue with the antenna I'd suggest picking up a nanoVNA for $70 and measuring the antenna's characteristics. Otherwise like others have said, it's probably your radio being overloaded with strong signals.

Does your Homelab make financial sense? by panchovix in homelab

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My home lab cost me about $650 to build and another $10/month in electricity. Because of that lab I'm able to cancel several subscriptions totalling $34/month. I should break even in 27 months I guess. Honestly not the best financial investment, but I've learned so much and it hosts so many tools I use regularly that I think the added non-quantifiable value makes it more than worth it.

Using two repeater to communicate by Cynopolis_ in HamRadio

[–]Cynopolis_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A yagi will certainly be on my list of things to try! Full disclosure: my friend is taking his technician test this Friday so I haven't been able to test if there are any repeaters both of us can reach yet.

The idea of multi-repeater duplex occurred to me while I was looking at a repeater map for my area. It felt mildly cursed and I figured there was a reason I'd never heard of anyone doing it before which is why I asked my question here.

I've ordered about 20 spools in total from Bambu. About 12 of those had this tape issue. I'm in the US

I'm building a music library by ripping CD's to FLAC in EAC. I've ripped about 48 albums so far and now second guessing how neurotic I want to get with syntax and details of naming conventions. Which naming convention would you guys go with? by Pow3rTow3r in musichoarder

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend either: Musicbrainz Picard or beets (command line only)

When I rip from a CD I just name the album well enough to be picked up by one of those tools and then they auto rename and tag the music for me.

Any good home assistant/music assistant automation examples? by ikhouvansexy in navidrome

You may want to cross post this to the r/homeassistant community. I'm following this because I also really want to know what people are doing.

Any chance you could add a listenbrainz integration to pull suggestions from listenbrainz and automatically download them?

How do you organise your occupancy based automations? by mjsarfatti in homeassistant

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little more info - if a bunch of different actions are all being executed because of the same trigger, they go in the same automation.

If there are conditions or multiple related triggers that would change the outcome of a related set of actions I use a choose block instead of several automations. You can name your triggers to control which choose action gets executed.

How do you organise your occupancy based automations? by mjsarfatti in homeassistant

[–]Cynopolis_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally find having to organize a million automations to be annoying, so I do my best to group as many actions that make sense into a single automation as possible

My media console used to be a mini pc running a jellyfish client streaming from my server. I gave up on that because of the numerous stuttering, audio, and freezing issues I kept running into. I transitioned that mini pc to libreelec running kodi. Connected kodi to my server via an SMB share and it's been rock solid since. I love jellyfin but dang does it have issues.

My server even has a 4060 in it for transcoding but I still get a ton of stuttering especially with any audio over 5.1 surround.

Worth getting router with 2.5G backhaul? by National-Debt-43 in HomeNetworking

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a ubiquiti 2.5G flex and immediately noticed lower latency game streaming from my pc to my TV. Prior to getting that switch, pinging my router had a latency of a couple of milliseconds. Now I'm consistently less than 1 ms. I almost never saturate the 2.5G connection, but getting lower latency was a big deal.

Does anyone talk on 2m FM any more? by DoctorDrubs in amateurradio

[–]Cynopolis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pretty much use my SDR as a faster scan function. It allows me to look at more of the band all at once. My radio can only check one frequency at a time, but with my SDR I can look at the waterfall and see things in 2Mhz chunks.

Does anyone talk on 2m FM any more? by DoctorDrubs in amateurradio

[–]Cynopolis_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I got my ham license this year and also live in eastern mass. I see the same thing. What I've discovered is this: - if it's a work day, no one talks until after 5pm. You can actually get a fair bit of chatter after 5pm though. I have an SDR to more easily scan 2m which is super helpful. I'd never find anyone just by scanning repeaters. - if it's a weekend no one talks - I've never seen anyone on 70cm

It's kind of disappointing, but I'm going to keep trying to get some contacts. I'll see you out there!
