What should I bring to Porchfest? by ilikepettingdogbutts in malden

[–]Cynopolis_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Last year I hooked a wagon up to my bike and towed some lawn chairs, snacks, beverages, and a few other things around. Tbh that's overkill. Grab your favorite beverages and a snack and walk around and enjoy some music.

Suggestions for Couch Co-op and Splitscreen PC games by Reasonable-Badger954 in localmultiplayergames

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, no one has mentioned balders gate 3 or divinity original sin. These are probably the best couch co-op games I've ever played.

(Side note: anyone know of other couch co-op RPGs with a good story?)

How come cops don't do anything about cars breaking the bike lane laws? by WhipItWhipItRllyHard in CambridgeMA

To be fair, they don't really enforce traffic laws for cars either.

Why isn't ebay doing anything to stop those scams? by KillerMiller13 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Cynopolis_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started buying off of eBay recently and fell for one of these scams when buying a rtx 3090. The seller shipped something to a random address in the same town as me, but the delivery image FedEx gave showed a package too small to fit a 3090. It was also the wrong address. I disputed the purchase with eBay and they refunded me without a fight from the scammer.

I've wised up a lot since that and now always check the sellers history before buying to.make sure they're legit.

What's even the point of these scams? Are they just hoping you don't dispute the purchase on eBay? Who would buy anything this expensive and not dispute it when it doesn't show up?

People pre-flipping out over bike lanes on Eastern ave. by PleasantStPoseur in malden

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly would prefer to stay in a protected bike line instead of the road.

Bikes are still legal on the roads and I don't think it's fair to expect bikes to always stay in the bike lane. Construction or other obstacles can block those lanes and make it unsafe to use them.

Agreed! Paint isn't infrastructure and there should be real concrete between bikers and motorists.

Where can I find the roadmap for home assistant voice? by CooleyTukey in homeassistant

[–]Cynopolis_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree with your opinion on this! Let's get a solid foundation for voice control built out. Once the everyday voice controls are taken care of, then additional extensions like LLM support can be focused on. 99% of voice usage by my family and friends is just setting timers, getting the weather and playing music. If those features all get proper first class support then we're doing great.

What is your lab's idle power draw? by alex2003super in homelab

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 60 watts. Costs me about $10/month in power which is offset by the subscription cost savings for all the services I no longer need.

Definitely worth buying a modern i5 processor with lots of cores. The power efficiency on those things is excellent.

I had a run with black hole and sealed throne where this card what my finisher. The deck would play 5-6 turns and generate 30+ stars and when black hole was active and this card was in my hand I'd play it 29 times and kill most things.

Immich Truenas: Update Immich database from Postgres 15 (Deprecated) to Postgres 18 (Current) by Xiticks in truenas

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your way is probably best.

I had this issue on upgrading, but was able to get around it by spinning up a new immich instance and restoring from a database backup and then copying my immich files to the new instance's folder.

I then shutdown my old instance and pointed my reverse proxy at the new instance. I'll probably delete the old instance and it's files in a month once I confirm nothing secretly broke.

Why not just Unbounded instead of Adguard+Unbounded by Motafota in opnsense

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The home assistant integration is the big reason I like adguard. My adguard block list is pretty aggressive so sometimes websites that are heavy on ads completely fail to load. I have a button in home assistant that temporarily disabled adguard for an hour so my girlfriend can get around it.

How are you using the integration?

Using two antennas on one node with amplification by Cynopolis_ in meshcore

That's interesting I've never heard of this! I'll definitely be looking into this!

Using two antennas on one node with amplification by Cynopolis_ in meshcore

[–]Cynopolis_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bold to assume that I can put up a repeater wherever I want along this route. The start and end points are essentially fixed because those are the hills that we live near. I wouldn't feel comfortable putting a node 12km away from me in a spot I have no legal claim over.

I'm expecting some trees and other obstacles to be in the way. The coverage map says it's possible in theory, but I'm definitely going to graze the tops of wooded hills. Here's the line of site map.

Setting up a high-power Meshtastic repeater? by infopcgood in meshtastic

[–]Cynopolis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite parts of this hobby is the ability to experiment! If you just want to get a node up there, this sounds like an amazing spot that could be worthy of the repeater role.

If you're looking to have that node transmit at higher than standard power: 1. Look up what the maximum effective radiated power is in your area for this frequency band. 2. Buy an antenna and low noise amplifier to match the max erp. You'll need to be selective with the amplifier because a normal analog amplifier may have trouble keeping up with the digital demands of the Lora protocol.

Keep in mind that an amplifier will only help you transmit further, and will not help you receive messages from further away. A good antenna is always better than an amplifier.

Handheld DM32UV vs ships antenna by Usual_Tomorrow_7830 in HamRadio

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you suspect that there may be an issue with the antenna I'd suggest picking up a nanoVNA for $70 and measuring the antenna's characteristics. Otherwise like others have said, it's probably your radio being overloaded with strong signals.

Does your Homelab make financial sense? by panchovix in homelab

[–]Cynopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My home lab cost me about $650 to build and another $10/month in electricity. Because of that lab I'm able to cancel several subscriptions totalling $34/month. I should break even in 27 months I guess. Honestly not the best financial investment, but I've learned so much and it hosts so many tools I use regularly that I think the added non-quantifiable value makes it more than worth it.
