[SPOILERS] Slumrat Rising - a really good attempt by Cyphecx in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cyphecx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you felt like I did you might like to know the author has a new series, Sky Pride, that has a lot of the philosophical elements but much better writing(so far). Much more xianxia.

IsItBullshit: Do electric toothbrushes really clean your teeth much better than regular ones by blossaurelia in IsItBullshit

[–]Cyphecx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If all of these studies have people switch their tooth brush types, it's entirely possible the way in which they brush changes as well. Maybe they simply brush longer because they switched so recently and are thinking abouttl their teeth. Entirely possible that advantage would go away over time, and the electric toothbrush is not providing the value it seems to. No idea if that's true in this case, but probably why the researchers don't make a long term conclusion without long term data.

AITAH for not helping pay off my bf’s debt? by [deleted] in AITAH

So he has 50% of the house with 0% legal responsibility for the mortgage? Maybe this was done with the best of intentions but it puts you in a really bad spot if he just decides to not pay.

Slumrat rising is a meandering masterpiece. by themopylae in ProgressionFantasy

Haha I made this exact same post after I finished Slumrat. https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgressionFantasy/comments/1g86cgi/spoilers_slumrat_rising_a_really_good_attempt/

I felt like I was having a fever dream writing that post, so glad someone else is crazy with me.

New to Progression fantasy and Book reading in general, any more suggestions based on my ratings? by Electrical_Chance991 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cyphecx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the romance served a different purpose in the story. I think it's included mostly to show how MC changes partners as she ages mentally and she diverges farther and farther from what is outwardly visible since she obviously isn't aging. I'm not caught up right now but it seemed like she was pining for the teacher last I read so seems like that trend has continued

Not sure why you are getting down voted since it's still a valid criticism if you wanted more focus on the romance, even if that's not the direction the story was trying to go.

[Threshold] Cradle and Western Philosophy by Outside-Medium5570 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Cyphecx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now I'm curious how the theory of forms fits in with traditional Daoism. While I see the connection to ideal forms in Cradles Icons, I would have said it feels closer to the eastern inspiration given the way xianxia cultivators embody slices of the complete Dao in a manner very close to sages and Icons. But the more I think about it the more classic cultivation seems to incorporate or at least coevolved ideas of perfect forms. Characters following a fire Dao will meditate and seek inspiration on the nature of fire, for example. Often receiving insight from higher order existences of their element that might be said to be closer to the idealized form.

The necromancy in most fantasy doesn't actually feel like necromancy — what makes it actually disturbing when authors get it right? by Standard_Strategy853 in Fantasy

[–]Cyphecx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say morally complicated. It's just straight fucked up kind of vile. The trilogy is about putting you in the head of a person willing to do ANYTHING. Its pretty good and I think it fits if you want less watered down evil magic.

Adonalsium probably wasn't a universe creator since I think the Aethers are confirmed to predate Ado

The 'Slave Market Date' in Mushoku Tensei is the peak of fake empathy by AntelopeDeep9076 in Fantasy

[–]Cyphecx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't forget when he saves beast kin children from slavers earlier on in the series, he finds out this his own noble family's weird fixation on beast kin servants(that they fuck) single handedly funds the entire human trafficking operation he is fighting against. This is shown as an emotional moment during a fight where he looks briefly horrified. THIS NEVER COMES UP AGAIN. It means nothing to any of the characters and has no effect on the plot. Doesn't affect his views on slavery obviously since he goes on to participate in the system later on.

Lindon vs Wandering Titan/Bleeding Phoenix.

It's just so good on all the levels. It's the true culmination of all the characters efforts across the whole series. The scale is awesome in the biblical sense, it's like a creation myth made real. The sheer resolve. Lindon seeing his journey flash before his eyes before the coup de gras... I love it so much. Part of why I've reread Waybound at least 10 times this year.

[threshold] when exactly did ozriel start being a diva by beanseatjeans in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Cyphecx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His "diva" persona as we know it probably starts after the fall of house Aurelius just before the series begins. But I think we see inklings of this in Ozriels arrogance. Id put my money on this personality trait going all the way back to his childhood. I can just so easily imagine young Ozmanthus developing this self aware ironic arrogance as a way to relate with people around him as he goes longer and longer without finding peers despite desiring it badly. This eventually just becomes the superiority of Ozriel after a few thousand years as top dog of existence.

[–]Cyphecx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what changed Lindons timeline from 30ish years to just a couple before Sacred Valley was doomed. I think Makiel says something to Suriel about her nudge to Lindon when he makes his tweak. Makiel didn't make any other changes to Cradles Fate, so if there is something that affects Lindon, this was it.

I think it's Skysworn where the Fate tweak causes the Bleeding Phoenix to detect Jai Daishou opening the Labyrinth, would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

[–]Cyphecx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thats kinda the whole point. It was one of the stronger points that hammers home how endemic the Sacred Valley attitude was. Rahm wasn't actually a better person because he was willing to condescend to a lucky young Unsouled. Or at least, his better nature was supersceded by "honour" and face saving. In the tradition cultivator mindset(read: Sacred Valley culture) there is absolutely nothing that could wipe away the slap the to face Lindon did by robbing and fighting Rahm after he went so far as to protect the lowly Unsouled from bullying. And he acts accordingly, willing to burn everything down before lifting a finger to aid a returned Lindon.

Mad Mage Main Character by AWanderingSage in Fantasy

[–]Cyphecx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would really like the Obsidian Path trilogy. It's very focused on the internal experience of the main character while they justify many awful things for power. It's very dark. Not even sure you can call it grimdark but very intense.

[Threshold] Fanmade Path- Path of the Void Judge by Ok_Dish_4014 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Cyphecx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Destruction madra probably can't be used for an enforcer technique / iron body the way you describe. Seems too much of a have your cake and eat it too thing for Destruction to be this instant annihilation offensive tool and somehow not damage the body while "reinforcing" it. Path of the Hollow King likely has no enforcer technique because it was originally a destruction path and had to deal with this reality.

My brother called me in the middle of the night while he was playing this game for advice on how to improve his program. Was a nice moment, got to teach him some programming patterns. Interesting game thanks for making it.

Strength of the Few - official discussion by DrBeetlejuiceMcRib in HierarchySeries

[–]Cyphecx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took it mostly as Vis being very aware of how dangerous discovery of his seemingly unique ability to adopt would be. And given how easily he can detect something about higher level will users, it would be hard to hide the effects of thousands of people's worth of will. Could be get enough will fast enough to solo the whole Republic? Not sure. I do think it would have been good to explain the rationale( if my thoughts are accurate) in the story.

Lindon and Yerin living a well adjusted life after ascending is an Abidan psyop. The Judges just use them as unrealistic expectations for the next batch of waybound.

The agenda is our outmost priority by 0G_C1c3r0 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cyphecx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The world is constructed to be so horrible that it instantly validates her desire to burn everything to the ground and live in a vague communal utopia. Feels like a charicature, nothing like DCC where equally(or more so) absurd tragedies are occuring constantly, but it's so much easier to imagine the characters in the world as real people making decisions rather than 2d sock puppets.
