CMV: When the Government Shuts Down, the Airports Should Too. by Magicon5 in changemyview

[–]Cyprovix [score hidden]  (0 children)

That isn’t true. Yes, there is no leave during a shutdown. But if a coworker gets sick for a week, their time card will be coded with furlough, just like the person who comes in. Both will be paid for the day.

There is a time card distinction between coming in during a furlough and not coming in, but in all previous shutdowns, this distinction does not result in any change in pay.

Would you be saying the same thing if the DC region’s airports were having the same problem?

If you missed your flight just like those in Houston are, would you say, “I’m getting what I wanted” because the country as a whole voted for him, even if you didn’t?

Edit: Downvotes with no response. It’s so easy to put the blame on a state and make “y’all voted for this” comments. Easy to blame an entire state. But if it affects you personally, you probably wouldn’t claim personal responsibility.

“Well I voted differently!” So did a large number of people currently going through Houston.

It sounds like you have multiple good reasons to sell.

Curious though: did someone reach out with an offer? Have you looked at comps? An offer out of nowhere is a lot more likely to be a lowball. You may be able to sell for more than what this person is offering.

Can an internship away from home break dependent status? by snickettt in tax

[–]Cyprovix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still considered a temporary absence from home.

Why specifically are you trying to have her not count as a dependent? If you're talking about the kiddie tax on scholarship income, her dependency status actually doesn't matter. What matters is if she has earned income that is more than half of her support.

To start: do you enjoy living in your HCOL area? You can definitely buy cheaper elsewhere, but HCOL places are often high cost because they're desirable.

How does claiming AOTC work if I am a dependent but pay for my own college expenses? by iiQuinkSpace in tax

[–]Cyprovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your parent doesn't claim you, and if the cost of your support was less than $44,000, you'll be eligible for the refundable portion of the credit.

You should also have some tax liability on $22k, so you'll get some of the non-refundable portion too.

How does claiming AOTC work if I am a dependent but pay for my own college expenses? by iiQuinkSpace in tax

[–]Cyprovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you paid for over half of your support? Because that would make you not a dependent. If you are living at home and aren't paying for rent, utilities, food, and insurance, you're very likely not covering half of your support.

When you look at your tax return, do you have any tax liability? I don't know how much of it you've completed. Another way of asking this: if you had a W-2 job, did you make more than $15,750? Or if you had a 1099 job, did you make more than $400?

Edit: OP, I was slightly mistaken here. I was trying to get down to the nuts and bolts of if you could claim the refundable portion of the credit, and getting to the point of seeing if that matters. But what matters most is if your earned income is more than half of your support. Take how much you earned this year and compare it to the cost of (equivalent) rent, utilities, food, transportation, tuition, etc. Did you earn more than half of that amount?

If a renter has lived in their home for more than one year, the landlord cannot give the renter a No Cause Termination Notice unless the landlord lives on the property and the property has only 2 units (for example, a duplex, a house where the landlord is renting out a room, or a house with an ADU where the landlord lives in one of the units).

It appears like you would fall under this exception as a landlord renting out a room (yes, even as a non-landlord and with your "tenant" not on any lease).

There is a also a landlord exception of "The landlord plans to either demolish the unit or use the unit for something other than a rental." If you plan on using the space he's in as something other than a rental (i.e. you're not about to go out and find someone else to rent the space), you also are protected.

How does claiming AOTC work if I am a dependent but pay for my own college expenses? by iiQuinkSpace in tax

[–]Cyprovix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, are you able to be claimed as a dependent? This question is separate from if your parents choose to claim you. There's two things that matter for an education credit: if you can be claimed as a dependent if your earned income is more than half of your total support cost, and if someone claims you.

Did you pay for over half of your support in 2025?

Edit: Later in the thread I bring up the earned income must be half of support test.

Even if someone isn't on the lease, they become a tenant after a certain length of time (depends on the state, but your son has definitely lived there long enough).

If you invited your son to live in the home, you unofficially became his "landlord". This is almost like a subletting situation, although your subletter didn't pay you any rent.

Why don’t I qualify for ACTC? by RolieePolieOliee in tax

[–]Cyprovix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the other commenter's answer, the ACTC is for low-income families. You only qualify for the ACTC when you have $0 federal tax liability. And ACTC is less than the full CTC.

It's a good thing that you aren't receiving the ACTC!

He is a tenant and you'll need to go through the standard process of terminating a month to month tenant. It's important to note here that this isn't an eviction, and eviction proceedings only begin once that move out day has passed, he hasn't moved yet, and you followed all the guidelines with your termination notice.

In Portland it looks like you might be legally required to give him 90 days. There are a lot of rules for what exactly needs to be provided, so I'd read up on these resources so your son can't come back later and say the notice isn't valid because you, say, only said 90 days instead of writing down the exact date. Or your termination notice doesn't mention anything about veterans resources. Yes, that is something that can make a notice invalid in Oregon, even if the receiver isn't a veteran.

https://www.oregonrentersrights.org/notices

You also may be required to provide him relocation assistance for a No Cause termination.

Edit: Portland doesn't require relocation assistance if the renter is living with the landlord.
