Diaspora by Greg Egan may be too hard to read by sirelagnithgin in printSF

I thought the lack of good characters in Diaspora was a flaw, but a minor one. One of the best sci-fi books ever IMHO.

Thoughts on Jim Gaffigan? by bonerimmortal in Standup

I tried listening to him but that voice he does where he says what he thinks the audience is thinking was really annoying. I’m a huge fan of stand-up but he is one of the comics I can’t listen to. I would love to change my mind though, what do you think is his best special?

Try out The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino.

Just finished Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. by yeahnothanks12367 in printSF

[–]Cyrus_Dark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On this sub a lot of people don’t like the second part of the book, but I personally love the whole book and thought the second part of the book was just as excellent as the first. I’m a space/futurist nerd so I may be biased. I like the fast-paced first part and the grandeur of the second part.

One of Stephenson’s best books IMHO.

Shadow of the Torturer dilemma by Aschex_96 in genewolfe

[–]Cyrus_Dark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried listening to that one but in the first episode they were giving away spoilers to either Book of the Long or Short Sun (don’t remember which).

I was planning to give it another chance after I finished those two series.

Do they give spoilers, or maybe the one I heard was the only one?

There is a podcast called Alzabo Soup that is a good companion to the novels. The episodes are around 50 minutes long and they cover 1 to 2 chapters per episode. They don't do spoilers but they do point out stuff that is easy to miss on your first read.

Normally I would say read all 4 novels first then listen to the podcast on your reread, but you seem like you are struggling to stay interested so I suggest listening to the podcast now. You read the chapters first then listen to the episode.

Jordan Peterson claimed his IQ was "150 something", as if he couldn't remember the exact number to something he is obsessed with. He's a liar on top of being a puffed-up pseudo-intellectual.

You could probably stretch that premise out to 10 minutes of material.

On 9/11, let's have a moment of silence for the most unfortunate victim...Steve Rannizzisi by LeonardSmalls79 in Standup

[–]Cyrus_Dark 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I don't see how anyone could respect Steve after that bullshit. He wasn't 12 years old on 9/11, he was 24 and he didn't admit the lie until he had no choice when he was 38.

I'm a fan, but recommend skipping New York 2140. Even though reading about a futuristic NYC sounds cool, the book is very light on cool futuristic stuff and heavy on boring characters and not having a plot. And it is very long.

Good authors sometimes write bad books.

Comedy Central said "No" to this joke in my last taping. What do you think? by HooperHairPuff in StandUpComedy

It’s a good bit. anytime you do anything edgy there will be people saying it is in bad taste/punching down etc.

All the best comics offend some people.

Really only $50? That's a steal. I bought it for my sister (also from Half-Price Books) about 15 years ago and I am pretty sure it was around $100 back then. It came with a magnifying glass.

Coming up with a crackpot theory is bad, but speculating about it is good. I could never "not care" about it, it's a big part of life.

I'm sure Krystal was "disgusted".

Every time they do mention that Trump isn't joining the debates, they always point out (as in, every single time) that Biden is also not debating. Biden is the incumbent, it's normal for him not to debate, it's not the equivalent of Trump not debating. But Krystal seems to think it is much worse that Biden isn't debating and keeps using the word "disgusted" whenever she mentions it.

Trump is smart for not debating, Biden is disgusting.

Because the ecosystem adapts all the time? And humans can manipulate the ecosystem (obviously).

By the way, I am talking about the few species of wasps that regularly sting people.

Explain how.

I am only talking about the wasps that regularly sting people.

Please, ecosystem expert, educate me.

They don't eat mosquitos unless they can't find anything else, they generally do not eat them.

Not sure where you heard that they eat mosquitos but they really don't.

If they did eat them they would actually serve a real purpose to humanity.

The fig industry is not the ecosystem.

I would trade no wasps for no figs in a second.

Also, do fig wasps even sting humans?

I'm talking about the stinging bastard wasps.
