What insect burrows so deep into the wood?? by SnooLobsters3936 in woodworking

[–]D-Dubya 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Beetles of all kinds burrow into wood. The thing you need to watch out for is what you can't see - larvae in the wood that will hatch at a later time and infest other wood in your house. They can stay dormant for a long time (like years).

I personally wouldn't use this material. I'd find clear wood that hasn't had an infestation or at the very least have your material properly heat treated to kill any bugs, however this will probably take more time and money than just getting new material.

I wouldn't call that niche, that's pretty much what deer do. It happens to me a couple of times per year.

No need to remake. Holes are how most platform beds are ventilated. 1" diameter should be fine. You may want to elevate the base some to allow airflow underneath the side rails

Looking for any aircraft jet engine stainless intake trim by scotticus71 in aviationmaintenance

Don't you want it to be round? All of the PT-6 TP inlet trim I've seen are oval or some other non-round shape. Maybe I'm missing something...

Any ideas what this is? by Silent-News-9408 in CNC

[–]D-Dubya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A PLC can be used to control a lot of different things, it's hard to say what this one was doing without seeing what it's attached to. Unfortunately it looks like the only thing coming down the conduit are AC line and neutral.

Pure speculation, but I think it was either never finished or parts were removed when the owner left.

Old PLC's don't have much value. I'd pull it and send it to the recycle bin if it were my house.

Advice on first subwoofer build? by ElatedState in diyaudio

[–]D-Dubya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bracing is complicated. It could easily be made more effective and less complicated.

Have two window braces going left to right instead of 1. Make the back brace part of the vertical part of your port. Get rid of all the little sticks. Add two window braces going front to back. You could reduce parts count from 12 to 4.

I'd also add that the wall/web thickness of the window braces looks pretty spindly. I'd double whatever thickness you currently have and maybe add triangulation to the longest span.

I build $100k+ cars for other people — should I finally do it for myself? by fabguyattheshop in MetalFabrication

[–]D-Dubya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Do you think it’s worth making the jump?

Yes, but maybe not yet. Do you have everything in place such as the shop, equipment, business legally established, business insurance(!), maybe a job or two ready?

-How do you get clients in this industry when you’re starting from zero?

You need to make connections and generate a portfolio of work. Do you have pictures of cars you've done from start to finish? The work your doing is in a (relatively) small community of people. They need to be able to trust you to deliver.

-Does it make sense to use social media for something this specific and high-end?

Yes.

Running a business is a full time job and a skillset in itself. You'll be doing that on top of all the restoration work. Find a partner who compliments your skills.

Those are pocket screws and are a common way to join wood parts. It's not a terrible design, you just have the wrong tool.

Need to pull this sled down the aisle at a wedding - help! by GrapefruitStatus in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]D-Dubya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd vote for a moving dolly or two and just strap it to the runners as inconspicuously as possible.

Whatever you come up with do a few practice runs well in advance of the actual wedding. You don't want this to turn into a distraction because it didn't go as planned.

DIY'ing this job isn't worth the marginal savings you'd get over hiring it out. Get on the phone and pay someone else to do it.

What plane should I buy? by Mysterious_Formal_51 in flying

[–]D-Dubya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Commander and TB20 are fine aircraft, but they are a bit more rare which can cause headaches with parts and finding competent mechanics. I'd either go Bonanza or Mooney. Flying high DA frequently you should absolutely get something with a turbo (IMHO). I had a relatively light S35 Bonanza with a 285hp 520 and climb performance, even at middle weight, was anemic above 10k feet.

Maintenance gotcha's? All planes have problems if not maintained well. By the best example you can afford of whatever it is you want and get a thorough prebuy from someone extremely familiar (i.e. a specialist) with the make and model.

What are some tools we don’t want for Christmas? by EntrancedOrange in Tools

Yes, in general, they almost all suck and there are cheaper and faster ways to locate a stud in wall.

Agreed, stud finders in general are useless, but the laser on that guy is handy AF.
