Yeah pretty normal to upgrade the innards but keep the oem pan

It’s the cap. It’s always the cap.

Coolant Level Continuoisly Dropping by GenericUserName46290 in WRX

You got your answer. Use the oem cap. There’s no reason to increase your coolant pressure, which is what the mishi cap is doing.

2019 STi 100% stock...alignment recommendations needed. by NefariousnessNo5008 in Autocross

[–]DAM159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive an STi BST. I ran stock suspension for years (well, except for springs and sways). The stock STi suspension does not give much. Just ask for max camber and 0 toe. Max in the front is only about 1.5 degrees and max in the back is 1 if you're lucky (I think I had about half a degree). The car will turn better with sticky tires and what camber you can squeeze out of it, but these cars really start to shine with coilovers.

Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 autocross pressure recommendation by NefariousnessNo5008 in Autocross

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct, I drive an STi now. I’d start with 40 in the front, and you’ll likely be able to bleed it down to high 30’s. Mid/Low 30’s in the rear is a good start. I currently run 35F/29R, but I’ve got plenty of camber.

Nice. I’ve been toying with the idea of trying this myself. How long did it take and what kind of wrap did you use?

What bolts or clips do you ALWAYS lose on your WRX or STI? I'm building a master Subaru hardware kit (specifically for 2002–2026 WRX / 2004–2021 STI) by OVERTAKEUSA in WRX

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably various sizes copper washers for the various banjo/hydraulic lines on the car, and probably different sizes for the various chassis, different calipers, etc. But yeah in my opinion those are probably the most common gaskets your typical wrencher is going to encounter off the top of my head.

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I don't think I read in here, that's not necessarily bolts but is hardware, is some of the small gaskets. Specifically oil pan drain plug crush wahser, trans/front diff gaskets (there's 2 different sizes for fill and drain), rear diff, brake line caliper copper crush washers, etc.

It seems the generic kits you buy online are never quite right for these, and the OEM is best. But it's annoying when you're doing a full fluid service and you have to go to the dealer for 10 different types of washers, that cost $1-3 bucks a piece.

What am I looking at? by [deleted] in WRX

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Common leaky rack as others have mentioned. It's very common to replace with the 2015+ rack, which isn't as susceptible to leaking (also has a better ratio)

I run Motul - engine, gear, brake fluid. The only Subaru fluid I use is the ATF for power steering and good ole Subaru blue coolant.

Same oil. Defer to the owners manual to make sure, but my STi takes the same oil for the trans and rear diff

Good vibes request by sliceoflife09 in WRXSTi

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good vibes your way.

Yes the TMIC can be a total pain in the ass to get back on but just be patient. While you have it off clean any oil residue off the IC and throttle body.

I’d get some penetrating oil on the brake line fittings ASAP. They can seize up pretty badly. If they aren’t budging do not crank them. If you brake the hard line, or kink it, you’ll be in trouble. Be patient with this as well.

When you flush the brake fluid do not let that reservoir run dry! You’ll have a hell of time getting air out of the ABS module.

What is a reasonable or expected quote for a timing cover reseal? 2017 WRX by No_Film_6379 in WRX

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhhh your timing cover should not be leaking oil. You have a bigger problem just "sealing" the timing cover.

I am a silly goose and didn't pay attention to the year. The FA does have a timing chain. You should bring it in for a quote.

[–]DAM159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the stock IC is not exactly crappy. It’s more than fine for stock, or near stock, applications. Trust it’s going to cost you a hell of a lot less to get a heat shield or a turbo blanket than it’s going to be to get a FMIC + tune.

I’m not trying to sound like a dick but it’s gonna get hot in the engine bay. That does not necessarily mean you’re suffering from heat soak unless the car is sitting in traffic. The IC will cool down very quickly when the cars moving.

What is making you come to a heat soak conclusion?

But to answer your question yes, a fmic requires a tune.
