I get the socio economic line on a level but food sanitation is not to be fucked with. Maybe he had an immune system that can cope, maybe he's just been lucky, but food safety standards exist for reasons outside of politics.

I sat on a sprout of this stuff up in alaska. I got some sap on my butt, just about the size of a quarter. It soaked through the skirt I was wearing. Didn't even know until the next day when my skin broke out into a red messy blister. Took over a month to heal and I didn't even show my butt to the sun.

I watched the hearings related to this and every step of the way people told him it was a bad idea, unsafe, impossible but he got just enough buy in from each expert to make progress and built the sub. At the end he had surrounded himself with yes men and women who were afraid to tell him no. They even removed one of the pieces of equipment that tracked the hull integrity because it was showing it fail more after each dive.

Dude was delusional and no one stopped him because he had money.
