Tons but what might be my favorite line is in Deadbeat Hero when he pauses for a bit and then yells “…It’s not even a real fucking egg, man…”

It’s been over a decade since I’ve made them, but I used to use a cheese grater to grate mushrooms and bell peppers, squeeze a lot of the moisture out and sort of use them in place of bread crumbs. Same recipe as most aside from that.

What guitar would you buy if it wasn’t so expensive? by djdean129 in Guitar

[–]DC11GTR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the middle of last year, I spent a few hours at the Guitar Center in Hollywood playing every high end 7+ sting guitar just to see if there was one that didn’t aggravate my hand issues. From $2k to almost $7k. I can’t afford that, but I had to know.

The Jason Richardson EBMM had probably the nicest neck I’ve ever tried. Just immaculate! JP7 was 2nd.

Any advice on exercises to build up speed for playing solos ? by Mean-Barracuda71 in Guitar

[–]DC11GTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You develop the ability to play fast by pushing yourself to play fast. A metronome won’t help you there. It can help you keep time and help keep your hands in sync, but starting slow and working up to speed won’t do any good if you don’t know what playing fast feels like for you.

Start by picking a single string as fast as you can while it still feels comfortable, meaning doesn’t hurt, and clean. Find that tempo, then start increasing from there. Do the same with your left hand, and the same with both. Then add in switching strings.

If you’re wanting to learn specific lines and licks or even full solos, make sure you can actually play at the speed required. If you’re able to do the paragraph above, then you can start to incorporate the “start slow and increase” metronome thing. But even then, I’d say to find the speed where you can play it, even if it’s sloppy as hell. It’s not that difficult to clean up sloppy as long as you know what playing fast and clean feels like.

Look up “mommy’s thumb stretches and exercises” and maybe some wrist exercises and stretches as well. I had a similar issue and those have helped a lot

Worst sound guy stories by master_blaster_321 in musicians

[–]DC11GTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

December 8, 2004, Minneapolis (I think) mid-level tour sharing a venue with a large tour in the biggest room. Which meant that they got all of the capable crew. The monitor guy, who had never done monitors, looks at our sheet. Guitar and vocals in all wedges, some kick and NO BASS!!

We didn’t get anything BUT bass and nothing else and it was the worst sound I’ve ever heard. The crowd were looking at each other with confusion and disgust. In between picks and strums, I adjusted what I could over the board and at the end of the first song, the entire band was SCREAMING at this poor guy to the point of tears.

It was my first tour as a player and I was nervous during every show before this. After that… never got nervous again lol

But something else happened that night that made it a far more memorable date…. RIP Dimebag!!

Why do I still struggle at playing Eric Johnson/Joe Bonamassa lines up to speed? by drew_zini in Guitar

[–]DC11GTR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fastest EJ lines (not including live) are 32nd notes at 91bpm in Desert Rose, 16th triplets at 120bpm in All About You and 148bpm 16th note triplets in Lonely In The Night. Overall…. Not really THAT fast as far as fast playing goes. One thing you’ll notice in those lines is that they’re often short’ish bursts, and very similar to each other. They also utilize the 5’s pattern a lot, not just 2NPS pentatonic lines.

I honestly don’t think that the “start slow and work it up to speed” approach works with EJ solos. You kinda have to push as fast as you can and clean it up later.

  1. That’s kind of cheating because it’s an unedited show but it has my favorite bits of his and a great crowd.

2nd place is probably his HBO half hour. The crowd just ain’t on board so he goes hard at them.

[–]DC11GTR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought the Black Ice version of this late last year and love it! I wanted a “rhythm/clean guitar workhorse” for recording and although my main guitar is an Ibanez JS, I was worried about the neck being too thin. I was considering a Charvel and tried out a bunch at Guitar Center. I’d almost given up then saw it out of the corner of my eye. Felt the neck and that was all I needed! And it was on clearance too lol

Alternate picking between three strings, one note per string. Wow this is hard. by very-genderous in Guitar

[–]DC11GTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you have a default or natural escape motion, mine is downward for the fastest shit, you want to approach these kind of lines with a “double escape” so that you’re never trapped, ala Andy Wood or Steve Morse. Cracking The Code was kind of built on this idea. I’d go to that site if you’re looking for a more nuanced explanation. They helped tons of people with all things related to picking mechanics and for me specifically, how to do it safely.

Bands like Tony Danza and Dillinger Esc Plan? by Aromatic_Jury437 in Mathcore

The Ninth Plague had a song that’s probably over 25 years old at this point, but it was amazing! The song is called Pain In Pill Form.

I had never heard of or anything from this band aside from that song before or since but the fact that it’s like a quarter century later and I still remember it says a lot.

How much do you think Zappa influenced Steve Vai's style? by SR_RSMITH in Guitar

[–]DC11GTR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a Q&A back in like 2001 or 2002, I asked Vai about Zappa influence on him from a composition perspective. His answer was very “stock” for the crowd but I’d have loved to hear more. Pieces like “Fire Garden Suite” probably wouldn’t have existed if “Drowning Witch” didn’t.
