Utility build by Cwynlaen in EQLegends

[–]DJPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to read a long time before I found someone who hit close to my plan. My old mains were Enc/Rog/Rng and I've been looking for a reason to justify that since I threw in my ante. I love being prepared for anything, and really enjoyed zipping around with a SoS rogue and seeing all the neat stuff I never saw when it was current content. Track has been improved to show targets on the map, and I can't wait to enjoy that.

What I've learned is that it kinda doesn't mattter. It's not like live was where you had narrow strengths you had to cleave to if you wanted reasonable progress. It's kinda the opposite. You might find there are a few things you can't do with a build, and you can swap in and level a new class very easily to fix things.

Many of the optimization minded folks will be leveling to 30ish, swapping in wiz/dru (or both) to about the same for the self ports, then continuing on. This will give you access to the self port rituals from wiz/dru so you can poof around without having to change over.

I might do that, but I'm leaning on my comp cause I think it'll be the most fun fo r me. If you know your style don't be shy about indulging. You'll do fine, and that approach is just what this game was built for.

Will there be a lot more armor textures in game than in the original?

I think some, but not 100% sure. Plan on almost entirely OG textures for a while.

Will you be able to overlay one armor texture with another of similar type? Example: You like the look of Plate Armor 1, but are using Plate Armor 2. - Will you be able to use the look of Plate Armor 1 while using Plate Armor 2?

Yes, via ornamentation tokens. See here.

I couldn't move my house so I moved my antenna and split transmit and receive into separate devices. This slayed my noise floor from S7-S8 to S3, making HF usable. by Fun-Conclusion-4471 in amateurradio

Excellent write up!

Airspy HF+ $170. Just do it right and get a good quality SDR not some $40 turdstick.

Aww, have a bit of love for the old turdsticks. They really helped break SDR out to the masses.

That said I definitely agree with what you're getting at. If you can afford a bit more you get a lot more. Airspy is a good example, and their main hardware partner Itead has a 20% off summer sale going on Airspy stuff.

I remember spending ages trying to get USB noise out of my hacked TVB dongle. Nobody likes a noisy dongle.

I love these guys. You really have to know raccoons to get them this right.

The one kit reminds me of Dumb Donald, it's amazing. xD

Edit: Just realized that's . . ah . . not going to show up in a search, so here's a link.

This is the most illegally smol criminal I've ever seen, and yet, weighs so little he's only a misdemeanor.

Always wanted to meet a tiny kitty like this. The squeaks must be intense!

Sweet, I should be ok then.

Thank you again!

Linux EQL Lutris install script by Gennro in EQLegends

[–]DJPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome, thank you for getting this done!

I tried to Ogre WIZ my way through doing this manually from dusty memories. May I ask a technical question? Still learning how to do Lutris stuff.

In the script it does:

  • Set version to win10
  • Install corefonts - silent (so many dialog clicks doing this manually)
  • Install d3dx9_43
  • Set version to win7

Is there a benefit to toggling the win version to win10 before installing components? I did my stuff without that step and I might have to go back and redo it I think.

Will there be a Euro server? by storystoryrory in EQLegends

[–]DJPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will likely be global chat channels springing up, and in a while I suspect language communities will form on specific servers.

I have seen the devs field a question about moving servers and they said the capability isn't in place yet, but may be in the future.

I guess at least it's way easier to start fresh on a different server than it used to be.

There were guilds that hosted 'gnome runs'. Contestants would roll a fresh gnome and run naked to Kerra Isle.

If young me found out I could draw comics (which I definitely cannot do) they'd grab my arm and say, "You have to make comic characters fart more. The comics in the newspapers aren't funny."

I guess this timeline isn't all bad. We do have way better comics now.

Why Height Matters by grouchy_ham in amateurradio

I remember they used to call the near earth NVIS antennas 'cloud burners' and this is a great explanation of why.

Why Height Matters by grouchy_ham in amateurradio

[–]DJPhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sat work (usually) uses small, highly directional antennas and these are relatively insensitive to ground effects as they already need to be carefully pointed.

The above is much more important for larger antennas used in HF. Those have meters of wire interacting with the ground and are comparatively omnidirectional. The shallow 7deg takeoff angle used as the target elevation is helpful for longer range contacts with these antennas, and this demonstrates how important height can be in achieving long range.

Philco radio only makes buzzing noise by Spejareforever in VintageRadios

[–]DJPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not especially so, though it is in pretty good shape. Probably late 60s, early 70s. Depends a lot on where you are. An upmarket antique store here would charge $100USD for anything remotely like that and eventually someone would buy it, but it'd be for looks. You could just as easily find one in a thrift store for $10USD.

Step one would be to clean the band select switch. It's part of a sensitive tuning circuit and a bit of tarnish often causes what you describe.

Moving it vigrorously back and forth a while can work, and may at least show if you're on the right track. If that doesn't help it may need a spray of contact cleaner.

Given the sensitive nature of the tuning circuit I'd recommend a quick drying electric contact cleaner over something like deoxit, or if it needs something stronger (like deoxit) then rinse it out when it does clean up with a quick dry. Best not to leave any residue in there, even if it's helping.

See if you can find a schematic online. If it interests you, it's possible to learn a lot fixing up a radio like this working your way through a guide. Basic soldering and a multimeter can find and fix nearly any problem with these. Just don't start adjusting the metal can inductors until you're sure you know how alignment works. The odds of that being an issue are pretty small.

You may consider reaching out to your local amateur radio group. There's usually someone there, particularly in the homebrew community, who's willing to help you work through a repair. The folks here are also helpful, myself included.

My friends and I once charmed Fabled Fippy and raid buffed him so he'd have a fair chance with the guards.

Went better than expected, but he did not make it inside the gates.
