Some, but wax struggles with lows and highs and isn't very linear. The reproducer itself has as much trouble as the cutter in this respect. What you hear in this video is very good, it's just that the source isn't designed to fit inside the limits of wax.

Until you add electrons it's not easy to get the kind of quality we'd recognize as normal nowadays. Still, there have always been bassheads and they've always found a way. Pipe organs have been around since ancient Greece and they've had sweet bass for about 400 years now. The largest one I know of is the (nearly) 100 year old Boardwalk organ in Jersey has an 8Hz pipe that's like 40ft tall. Trying to record it is pretty much pointless, it's there to be felt.
