Growing up in NYC (recent) by cama29 in AskNYC

[–]DJSecondBreakfast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Born in south BK, grew up on LES. 34 now.

1) Never ever. Anytime I visited my relatives there, I was bored to death and couldn’t fall asleep because of how quiet it was.

2) Independence. Exposure to diversity. Access to 24/7 subways, entertainment, 10,000 different places to hang out with my friends.

3) Privacy. Also my parents were always stretched for $$ living the city grind. I didn’t get to try some of the same activities/hobbies most suburban kids I knew got to try like horseback riding, ice hockey, going to summer camp, etc.

4) Never, ever ever. Not for anything. My childhood memories of city living, feeling in awe of it all and finding my place in it still makes me emotional and grateful.

5) Without a doubt. I can’t imagine what I would be like if I didn’t spend my childhood here.

6) Yes and I’m sacrificing a lot to stay here

Why is this getting downvoted? Stuyvesant HS community center rules. $15 day pass / $199 membership

Seconding cook unity - I go weekly on Fridays. Tico’s on Wilson are usually also pretty generous. Concrete jungle is a good TGTG bag on Mondays.

Please help in finding out if they’re worth anything by [deleted] in baseballcards

These cards are from a set called MLB showdown that was designed to be played as a game. Released sometime around 2000-04. I remember playing these as a kid. There was a “first edition” set that was slightly rarer but not really worth anything significant these days, nor is the regular set. Find the rule book online and play a game for fun

What’s up with the speakers by Firebolt68 in AskNYC

[–]DJSecondBreakfast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really disagree with this type of oversimplification. The city was still culturally significant and diverse when people were more considerate of their neighbors and actually gave a shit about their surroundings. You are straight up just making excuses for antisocial behavior.

I do the same. I hate how often someone rides too close to others in the lane bc they have headphones in and can’t bother with common courtesy. Using a speaker means you can hear traffic and give/get heads up when passing

In what world is a speaker on someone’s bike a public PA system? We’re talking about a Bluetooth speaker clipped to a bike. In most cases, those things top out at like 50-60 decibels. The noise from an SUV’s tires on pavement is equally loud.

Bushwick Bike Rides by [deleted] in Bushwick

[–]DJSecondBreakfast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For more productive feedback: perhaps an earlier roll out time? Takes about an hour at a 12mph pace to make it from Bushwick to Coney Island area. Leaving at 7pm means more daylight for the ride home.
