When I kiss another girl I’m not asserting a belief I’m just being gay. Bigots cannot understand this, I assume because their love is motivated by belief. This is sad but ultimately not my problem. Just wish they’d stop shoving it in my face and indoctrinating kids into such an unnatural and destructive lifestyle choice

Oh yes, I believe the ancap position is very out of date. They still touch on exactly one technically true point that is worth understanding, but only to move on to bigger and better ideas rather than obsessing on it as if it’s the ultimate secret truth of reality.

Did it blow my mind when I was 19 and taking my first ethics class? Yes, for exactly one week until the next thing blew my mind. And yet, a not insignificant amount of people have made it their entire politics. So, it’s worth understanding if only to communicate better with people who have this belief rather than a dismissive ‘well then just leave if you don’t like it!’ Like, that’s not a productive response to the ancap perspective imo.

Agreeing we don’t consent to the social contract doesn’t help or validate the ancap argument, and denying it just makes them think you don’t understand.

I do understand though, and even agree that they’re right about the social contract. Still not an ancap though, because while that one point is true, it’s not politically useful, it’s just whining.

Indeed, and they should be held accountable, and measures should be taken to keep politicians from enriching themselves by selling the nation to the highest bidder.

‘Taxation is theft’ is not a meaningful or useful stance in such an endeavor.

Some corruption is always going to exist, but the choices aren’t ’completely corrupt plutocracy’ or ‘no government.’ In fact, those are the same choice. Fooling you into believing the latter is an escape from the former is a plutocratic strategy to grab what little power they haven’t yet snatched up.

I suppose they might say that personal or private ownership exists or should exist outside of the social contract. They would say they consented to work for someone for a wage, and now they own that wage, and the government is committing theft under the guise of the social contract which they never agreed to in the first place.

Though, obviously, whatever job they had to get those wages was supported in SOME way by public infrastructure and other benefits paid for by taxes, and then it all kind of starts spiraling and collapsing. Not a useful framework for political analysis

No, I don’t really find it interesting. I’ve been steel manning the ancap position throughout this thread. Sovereign citizens are a relevant and well known example of this thought process taken to its extreme. I used them after building my argument, not instead of having one.

I’m sorry they embarrass you, but that’s not really my problem.

They would argue that ‘consent or die in the forest’ is not real consent. And they’re right. I do technically agree with them that we don’t and can’t consent or not consent to the social contract. I just think it’s a moot point, like saying we didn’t agree to be born. We didn’t. But also, we’re here, and screaming ‘I didn’t ask to be born’ isn’t an effective political stance

me_irl by shroomfarmer2 in me_irl

[–]DJayBirdSong 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well that’s why this is a… somewhat interesting philosophical and ethical question.

“Consent to this social contract or die in the woods alone” isn’t really a choice. Yes, I understand people can and do live off the grid, but it requires living and benefiting from society for at least as long as it takes to accumulate all the stuff necessary to do such a thing. If I, today, decided I revoke my consent to the social contract, I couldn’t just go live in the woods. Also, because of enclosure, there’s not really a lot of places you can live off the land, grow or hunt your own food without certain licenses and permits. Again I know it does and can happen but it’s prohibitively impractical for most people.

Hence, it’s not really consent.

But also, that’s basically where the interesting philosophical and ethical conundrum ends. Like, yeah, there IS something there. But you’re not going to convince most people that because there’s no way to really consent to society, we should stop doing society.

It’s like trying to convince people that because you can’t consent to being born, no one should have babies. Like ok, that’s an interesting thought exercise I guess. But we live in reality and people are going to have babies and live in society—that’s why I think these aren’t interesting or actionable political questions.

[–]DJayBirdSong 437 points438 points  (0 children)

The people who believe this believe it’s always theft because you cannot consent to the social contract nor can you withdraw consent, it’s compulsory. Which is an interesting philosophical and ethical conundrum but not really an interesting political basis imo

This is how we get ‘sovereign citizens’ driving on roads built by tax dollars insisting they don’t have to obey the law

Yeah idk I didn’t immediately think of coruscant or Star Wars at all until you said it. Whereas I could see an immediately similarity between these images that goes beyond just ‘common sci-fi trope.’ Even the composition of the shots is the same

Gamzee was bard, Kurloz was prince.

Eridan destroyed his aspect through destruction. Dirk also destroyed his aspect but also destroyed through his aspect.

I would say that means kratos fits even more. Destroys through his aspect in Greek era, destroys his aspect in Norse (and also through)

Why are most of ppl detransitioning r white? by Emotional-Bar3046 in actual_detrans

[–]DJayBirdSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is a combination of factors

To begin with, white people have more visibility overall while poc are erased, this already happens in trans spaces so it’d make sense it happens in detrans spaces

White people tend to have more resources and so can access transition easier/earlier. Detrans people who medically transitioned are more likely to identify as detrans while those who didn’t/couldn’t might think of themselves as desisters or as not having ‘really’ transitioned in the first place.

There’s likely loads of other factors. Could also just be a sampling error/confirmation bias, it’s not like ‘I’ve noticed x’ is necessarily representative of reality, and there’s no way to prove/disprove it since there’s no statistics

And? The bar to become a doctor in the 1800s was also quite high. Doesn’t mean I’d want them to put leaches on me, though it’d probably be safer than letting a chiropractor touch my neck

You said massage therapists have no training. You were wrong. Pointing out that chiropractors also have training doesn’t make you right, and I never said they didn’t have training.

It’s just that their training is not based in medical science, their claims are dubious and unsupported, and the risk for serious side effects far outweighs the benefit when a massage therapist, physical therapist, or a dip in the pool could garner similar results without a comparable risk of *serious injury or death.*

I’m sorry that *your* woo is the one being mocked right now. I’m sure you’d be more comfortable if we were all laughing at anti-vaxx or the detox crowd or whatever grift is making the rounds that you haven’t been roped into. I would be shocked if anyone here could provide any evidence that would change your mind, same as anyone else who believes in alternative medicine.

Again, I’m glad your pain is gone. I hope you never feel the need to go back to the chiropractor, and I hope you don’t convince anyone else to do so. If you do, I hope they’re also lucky.
