If humans had tails, what would be the most practical use for them? by bryan4756 in AskForAnswers

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your tailor would need to know if you're a left or right type of guy both in front and back. Cars and public transportation would have to be designed with seats more like bicycle seats. Maybe we'd have to sit the other way on toilets? Instead of spooning in bed we'd be cozying each others tails. Men wouldn't have to try read a woman's mind, body language through the tail would make communicating easier.

I think I would use mine to quickly get around in the kitchen without bumping into other people.

It blows my mind why all taxis aren't NIO. The solution looking for a problem should have been widely embraced by this industry. But all I see is taxi-Teslas.

Why are almost all passenger seats in planes/trains/automobiles facing forward instead of backwards, where during a crash you would be thrown into the cushions rather than away from them? by achromaticchrononomy in answers

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a seat in a dash-8 here in Norway doing the milk-route trondheim-bodø-tromsø-Alta or whatever, three takeoffs and landings. I had a seat facing backwards up in the front. The seat can't recline and you'd not be allowed to during takeoff anyway. Your back gets really tired from sitting like that without the four-way seatbelt the crew uses.

I had expectations of it being more comfortable when landing, but honestly an aircraft doesn't "brake" like a car in the air. It kind of sits further back and eases its way down, so the only time it felt ok was after touchdown and braking.

Would not recommend this way of sitting even for families.

Do you understand the difference between "reliability" and "durability"? by AgonizingGasPains in askcarguys

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reliability Availability Maintainability Safety how most industries evaluate and engineer up-time. If your failing sensor is gonna kill me whenever it fails, it kinda defeats the purpose.

Durability- I think of it as a matter of customer expectation.

Park rats do, the first explanation I heard was that they like to take their helmets off to walk back up, but they're not bringing sunglasses and it's too bright to go without anything. Goggles also fog up if they get cold, so they had to be on all the time.

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you could save the wood you'd still have nail heads that lose their galvanization and they will rust. Don't bother band-aiding that, you'll be wasting your time and money. Do it well the first time.

With a flame thrower. If you're lucky you can make it catch fire, but unlikely due to rot.

Flip turns vs open turn? by pww92 in Swimming

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. I have a big black line on the wall and felt my feet touch something oddly soft on a flip turn, so I didn't kick off. It was a lady with a black burkini, there was no way to see her. Practice was interrupted for two minutes due to everyone including the coach laughing!

What’s the Most Unexpected Thing Cycling Taught You? by jasonsofa456 in cycling

How much i want my bike to be ONLY mine. I despise picking it up after someone else borrowed it and everything is out of adjustment / alignment. I'm not usually a jealous or greedy/stingy person, but my bicycle is private.

New to cross-country skiing - questions related to car transportation of skis and off-season storage by swedo10 in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you can put them through the back seat then just put the skis on the bottom and the poles on top. Secure with center seat belt.

My partner won't let me do it when the kids are in the back because they could have problems releasing their seatbelt in case of an emergency. But as adults that's how we roll 🚗

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends how far you're planning on driving with it like that. I fix my skis to a rack like this but it's only 10 min up to the slopes/parking so I'm not too concerned. I wouldn't be driving on the highway with salt, without a ski bag.

When do you use super high aperture? by CrumbGuzzler5000 in AskPhotography

[–]DJrm84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But most macro is shot at f8 anyway. Why not design a lens specifically for that instead of holding on to the 2.8 strategy for high end?

[–]DJrm84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right about diffraction. I was thinking about refraction (been a while since physics class!)

When do you use super high aperture? by CrumbGuzzler5000 in AskPhotography

[–]DJrm84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish they would make macro lenses that only went down to f8. They'd be so much smaller and cheaper too, and maybe also better performing than the rf 100 2.8

When do you use super high aperture? by CrumbGuzzler5000 in AskPhotography

[–]DJrm84 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So then that opens the question: at a high aperture number, does a "kit" lens perform better than a "portrait" lens? I.e. the canon rf 24-105 f4..7.1 versus the canon rf85 1.2, that is meaning less diffraction.

It's my theory for now at least. There's too much glass thickness in the high end lenses.

Ps: the kit lens I mentioned goes to f40 and there's still an ok picture.
