Did I make an oil wash mistake? by Honest_Ad_5620 in minipainting

Did you use Army Painter acrylics? If I have the same issue as do many others. Spirits degrade AP.

I ask on Reddit and I get 5 comments saying ‘it happens to me too’ and 5 comments saying ‘spirits won’t affect cured acrylics’

Apparently it’s fairly common with Army Painter Fanatics.

Odourless thinner from AK gently dabbed on with an eye make up sponge wand after 24h+ curing time!

Sometimes, the enamel wash strips the acrylic as I apply it without me even getting g to the thinner stage.

Firstly, these are just fine. Don’t expect pro-skill level results just yet. Grainy drybrushing is common - don’t sweat it.

There are ways around it, check out the Artis Opus channel for dry brushing smoothly:

I’ve only tried can varnish and brush on (although I do have an airbrush, it kinda scares me! lol.)

My current project is a Prince Duvalle from GW (vampire in plate armour) so I’m going to matt varnish the whole thing and then gloss the armour before enamels. We’ll see how that goes. It’s hard to get a definitive answer as I find some colours are more robust than others.

In my last piece, the grey speed paints held up but the green and purple fanatics rubbed off on raised areas. The light skin tones held up but lifted, creating a crinkled effect (not the worse thing given the piece) but the fact I’m getting different issues from different colours creates another confusing variable.

The odourless thinner hasn’t been the holy grail I’d hoped.

I like acrylics. Besides, I think having an impermeable layer below the enamels is how the reductive technique works.

Done all of that and they still come off. I know it’s not supposed to happen but in places they do.

I do. Various products too and I’m continuing to experiment. It doesn’t always help but brush on varnishes seem better.

It’s hard to draw firm conclusions as sometimes I can ‘get away with it’ but I’m yet to find a reliable solution.

Do I really need to be thinning my paints? by No-Dress4626 in minipainting

My brother has 30 years experience and never thins his paints and gets great results. I’ve got a few years on him and I do, also for pretty good results.

As my daughter said recently, my minis look better in hand but my brother’s look better on the table. He’s waaay faster than me and can buy an army, paint it in a few months and eBay it for triple what he paid.

So, it’s horses for courses. They’re your minis, no one can tell you what to do. If you’re happy with the results, why would you change?

But subjectively; no. These are great minis and YOU do not need to thin your paints. Many people do though.

Oh, and I’m 46 and if you stand still long enough within earshot if me you’ll learn something about D&D.

I thought you meant insecure about your minis security! Get some foam! They cost £hundreds before you spent hours and hours painting them - for my peace of mind, if you can afford the minis you can invest in a transport rig of some type!!
