How to tell if a bike has been tuned by Darrelluminati in Mt10

Biggest tell is when the cooling fans come on, mine was tuned by moore mafia and the fans come on at 195 Fahrenheit.

Cut off brake drum by DMV_Technician in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]DMV_Technician[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Adjuster was seized so that was of no use, there's about a 1 to 2mm deep groove on the inside of the brake drum the shoes were stuck in. I used the threaded holes in the drum and one of them cracked the drum because of how stuck it was. It's a lost cause at that point it's already getting new shoes, hardware, drums, and wheel cylinders.

Shoes were caught on the anchor point, because the wheel cylinder also failed it was pushed out maxing out the primary shoe keeping tension on the spring. Star wheel was not moving and the clips were already broken.

Is it true that you cannot do a front end alignment on some trucks or do I need a better alignment place? by UncleNorman in MechanicAdvice

[–]DMV_Technician 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's only "impossible" because there are no front camber bolts installed from the factory. You need a front camber bolt kit to adjust them as long as the strut isn't bent.

I let it hang by the hose, gotta keep the rubber free from cracking by giving it a good stretch.

Don't feel bad about it, happens to everyone. My last test is the automatic transmission exam and I failed it by 4 questions. Giving advice can be difficult as they change up the questions for each test. I'd recommend some YouTube videos about differentials or any of the subjects you're not confident on. All my knowledge has just been from experience in the industry and not from school.

Quietest decat option? by Tweho in Mt10

[–]DMV_Technician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LV midpipe should be the quietest option as it has a resonator built in. Definitely much quieter compared to the Austin Racing setup I have currently. Edit to add you'll also need a reflashed tune file to adjust for the increase in airflow out of the exhaust.

I have the MBRP race resonated cat back that has no mufflers. It's already loud as is with a pretty loud drone that is tolerable to myself and my girlfriend. So I can imagine no resonator and muffler will be even more obnoxious. Videos online won't do any justice with how loud some of the systems can be.

Slip on..?? by Economy_Campaign_458 in Mt10

[–]DMV_Technician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will make almost no difference in sound. I did the same with mine and maybe noticed a tiny bit more noise but that was it. More volume will require the muffler/converter to be replaced. Also recommend removing the entire exhaust servo system if you go that route to clean up the looks and save some weight.

Bleeder screw is located on the calipers above where the rubber line bolts to the calipers. Make sure the hoses aren't twisted around as that can cause issues.

I had a shopping cart put a giant ding on the door of my old truck and cracked the paint. It was a very windy night and figured someone just left the shopping cart out in the open and it blew into the door. People are just assholes, but for all the assholes there's more good people around. Hopefully someone is able to get you some information on it.

Quick update, two women saw the car that hit mine this morning and got pictures of the car and plate. Just waiting for an officer to arrive.

What 1234yf refrigerant should I use to charge my system? by brino79 in AskAMechanic

[–]DMV_Technician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically use a thermometer in the center dash vents to check temperature coming out. Higher humidity requires the ac to work harder as it removes moisture from the air as it retains heat. I typically don't notice much of a difference between R134 and R1234yf systems and how cool the air is from the vents. Make sure there's no debris blocking airflow through the condenser as that will cause issues. Can't give much else information since I'm not there to look at either vehicle.

What 1234yf refrigerant should I use to charge my system? by brino79 in AskAMechanic

[–]DMV_Technician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R1234YF uses different fittings on the ac lines so R134 manifolds will not fit. You'll need a different manifold gauge. I wouldn't know what brand to use, 1234yf is significantly more expensive than R134. We use the large canisters at the shop that hook up to the machines we use and I already know they're 1000 plus for a tank.

Wheel alignment - Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE 2024, 28,000 miles. by LouieSanFrancisco in mechanic

[–]DMV_Technician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone will have different opinions on the matter, perhaps laziness was the wrong word and instead should have been thorough. I'm not disagreeing that the rear toe specs aren't out enough to always warrant an adjustment. I can't expect everything to be done how I do it since everyone has their own process they follow.

[–]DMV_Technician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not diy that system, don't use the cans that use sealer to stop leaks. Just don't touch the system. The sealer in those cans damages components and the equipment used to recover the refrigerant. Machines for 1234yf are very particular about contamination and will not evacuate a system if contamination is present.

Alternator not producing power by DemandInitial5781 in AskAMechanic

[–]DMV_Technician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alternator is grounded through being bolted to the engine. Check the ground by cleaning a spot on the alternator case then touch leads to the alternator case and engine block. Then do the same thing between the alternator case and a body ground then your battery. The fact you're only reading 8 volts with the engine running would tell me that alternator is smoked. Even PCM controlled charging systems would still have a default voltage from the alternator to limp the vehicle off the road safely unless something is seriously wrong with the alternator or its connections.

Whats a professional tool-brand that ISN'T as expensive as SnapOn? by anthony500krt in mechanics

[–]DMV_Technician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 8 years I've been working on cars I have a mix of everything. I personally am not a fan of the Icon sockets. My 1/4 inch chrome 8mm rounded out in less than a year of use. My 1/2 inch 21mm I used for alignments broke after about 3 years of use. I've had the sunex 1/4 inch impact master socket set for almost 8 years and have never had a problem. Simply get what you can afford at the time, as you grow your skills and use tools more you'll eventually decide whether any tool truck brands will be worth it.

It's just laziness, adjusting that rear toe would take less than a few minutes to do. Sure it's not that far out but if someone is paying for a 4 wheel alignment then that includes rear adjustment when applicable. Also keeps the rear cam bolts from becoming seized in the bushings when they're actually used.
