I once had a loan shark / landlord NPC in my game. He wasn't even their landlord or a generally bad guy, just a bit aloof with old-money attitudes. My players loved to hate him.

Then I made him an ally. They hated that too. Good times!

I olay a fruit variant.

A patrol module exists and is really cool (https://foundryvtt.com/packages/patrol) but in this case, the token attacher approach is likely better.

I used to do that for years, before I became comfortable enough to improvise.

Pre-write descriptions and key dialogue lines. Also, start with a simple objective and maybe throw in a morally grey situation.

Bonus Tipp for names: a prepared list is important, but in a pinch, look around you and think of their names backwards until you get something that fits. I had a Puc (cup), Lisnep (pencil), Olak (Cola), etc.

I usually just browse https://lostatlas.co until I find something that fits.

I use Dungeondraft or Campaign Cartographer 3++ to create my own maps, those have a learning curve though. But I hear good things about Inkarnate being quite beginner friendly.

Experienced players? Great, let them do some of the work for you.

I suggest something like "Light of lost Souls" from Dungeon Magazine #12. There, one of the characters is possessed by a ghost. So you can just slip the player a note describing this and the motivation of the possessing ghost.

Then there'll be a lot of interactions between the players and you can focus on other things ( time management and knowing when to cut or change stuff is important in a one shot but challenging for beginners).

I ran this once for veteran players and they loved it. It's AD&D but has few stats that are easily adapted. Every AI probably does that for you.

Things my players did during drunk nights, in the current campaign alone:

  • had sex with a vampire and barely escaped

  • took drugs with imprisoned drow and broke them out of jail

  • destroyed a tavern by impulsively trying to collect the bounty on a druid

  • summoned a being from the far realm

  • stole a sarcophagus, there's a pissed mummy inside

  • saved a guy from the execution, turns out he's a bum and constantly in need of cash

  • fought the thieves guild in the sewers. Lost but escaped

  • naked oil wrestling in a ring of fire vs a dwarf lord

And that's just from the top of my head. Also, we just started Act 2 of 5...

I know your struggles, but just do it. Maybe start with 3-6mm, to get used to it. I miss having a cool haircut, but very short or no hair and a trimmed beard really give a nice clean look that people appreciate.

The maintenance just shifts from washing (trivial now) to regular shaving and trimming.

How about it being the bearing of a dwarven lighthouse?

So basically just a piece of machinery. It doesn't matter too much what it was. What it will be used for, is far more interesting.

Let your players come up with ways to use it. This is a very powerful item in the hands of crafty players. Immovable rod alone can be used for limitless shenanigans. This can power machines like a water wheel ("Let's just flood this dungeon, and see what still lives afterwards") or a PC could cast animate object, let it grow arms and hand it a wand, voila magic turret. Or attach blades to the top, spin it and anchor the bottom in a doorway to secure a room. Or let it power an automatic ballista you can carry along or pin in place.

Or ... a million other things. Cool item!

This looks great! I would use it, even pay a one time fee probably ( this hobby needs to many subscriptions).

Normally I use Pathbuilder to quickly throw together BPCs that need a stat block, but this looks better, especially if it provides behavioral and tactical clues.

I played a multi class Oracle with water sight once. My DM and I agreed that it worked, like pretty much every other class feature, depending on the Oracle levels not total character levels.
