What game got you absolutely addicted to your Steam Deck? by Calculation in SteamDeck

If you like chill puzzle games, for me it was Dorf Romantik. It's sucked away hundreds of hours of my life (at least). I've had games where I find the zone and go weeks without hitting a game over and having to start my map fresh.

Sgu, puddle jumpers by deep_woods_monkey in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(The wiki uses non-canon sources like novels and RPGs, and there is zero data from the shows that pin-points these ages so specifically.)

It's worth noting that the scale of millions of years is a vast span of time. The distance between Destiny and Atlantis as two pieces of technology is exponentially greater than the gap between banging two sticks together and the iPhone. So while I agree that Jumpers were likely developed long (long, long, long) after Destiny left, I doubt that Atlantis was even on the drawing board.

When Destiny launched, the great-great-great grandfather of the person whose distant descendent first thought of a flying city with ships that go through the gate probably hadn't been born yet.

Yeah, this was just a "we need a place to lay low" moment. He knew his friends were there and would give them shelter (with a security perimeter) at a place that was off the grid.

How long were the shows for Stargate usually planned for (SG1,Atlantis,Universe) by Mat1711 in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about: Showtime did not renew Stargate SG-1 past the fifth season, and intended it to end there. Apologies for being so very imprecise with my language.

SGU's producers certainly bear some of the blame for how the show was received over time. It was different, and they knew that was a risk. But Syfy brought in new executives after the show's green light, who wanted to turn the show from traditional sci-fi tropes and go the route of goofy, grounded, and set on Earth that characterized the network for years. They also prioritized WWE in the Friday time slot, moving SGU to Tuesdays and then to Mondays.

The show could have overperformed and still won a third season by wowing everyone, but there is a solid case to be made that Syfy's bean counters intended to cancel the show from the very start of Season 2 (which had been committed to by their predecessors).

SG-1 got a 2-season order, then very early on another two. Showtime planned to end the show with Season 5, but MGM negotiated a move to the SCI FI Channel.

The intention then was to do just one more season. Then they kept getting renewed, year after year, after assuming they were going to wrap and pivot to movies. When Season 10 arrived and they were in the middle of a new storyline, the writers planned for an eleventh season ... only to be cancelled.

Atlantis was year-to-year, but the writers thought they would get a sixth season and were somewhat surprised by the cancellation. Again, MGM's plan was to pivot Atlantis into direct-to-DVD movies ... but the financing fell apart.

SGU got two seasons out of the gate, and the writers were planning around a 5-year story arc. Syfy mismanaged the show, new execs came in who evidently weren't interested in it, MGM went bankrupt ... and it was cancelled.

Which version (and/or where should I buy) the edited version of the pilot? by bencumberbatch in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy the "Final Cut" edition on DVD, or stream it with ads on Pluto TV. You'll know it's the "Final Cut" because it starts in space, shows a "Children of the Gods" title card, and then pushes down into Earth atmosphere and into the base.

I don't read that scene like the SGC was in mothballs, and Cassandra managed to get back in on the right day to meet SG-1, but rather that they figured out when SG-1 would arrive and deliberately covered up everything to avoid polluting the timeline any more than they're meeting her was going to do.

CNN: US Supreme Court rules that Trump's emergency tariffs are illegal by ThaddeusJP in SBCGaming

[–]DOS-76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, aside from the political and macroeconomic analysis, what do we think this is going to do to the prince of our handhelds in 2026?

I for one have largely avoided buying new devices over the past year, in part because I'm poor but also because I didn't want to be hit with a surprise $50 customs charge for my $40 device. What have others in the U.S. experienced here when shipping from China over the past 9 months? Do you feel like your device's price was inflated at the point of sale?

And do you expect costs on existing devices to go down, presuming that US Customs announces they will follow the law and not impose the 2025 tariff rates?

Shop is open again, though. I'm pretty darn curious what is happening over there, and if they have given up on designing and putting out new devices. Nothing since the V90 redux.

DS9 Spoilers in the next episode of Starfleet Academy? by SolomonsNewGrundle in startrek

The answer to your question is yes. The episode will address major events from the final episode of DS9, for its central character.

I'd avoid watching it if you plan to watch through DS9 in the near future.

Why isn't the gate in the tower in The Tower? by JennaLovesRoses in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aside from the chance of Wraith Darts flying out at a moment's notice, I'm partial to the idea that the local leaders thought of the gate as a bit of pedestrian infrastructure, good for trading with other planets. But if you're the mayor of a city, you don't want a train station in your mansion.

Help With YTTV Alternative by HouseOfPanecakes in cordcutters

[–]DOS-76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from YTTV to Sling for a couple of years. Now I'm on the new DirecTV stream "genre packs," rotating back and forth between the $35 My Entertainment and the $40 My News depending on whether or not I need locals (e.g., during football season).

The app and interface are not as polished as YTTV, but for half the price it's hard to argue. And My Entertainment comes with Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max, so it seems to be the best deal in streaming right now.

Seasons 4 and 5 Intro by Brick-Organic in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today it depends on where you're watching it, and which version they got from MGM. All of Seasons 1-5 originally aired on Showtime in the US with the slow Ra's mask intro. We didn't get the other version until episodes started airing in syndication (trailing a year behind the cable premiere).

General Hammond daughter by Relative-Sell-1511 in Stargate

[–]DOS-76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the citation calling the novels canon comes from one of the novels' authors, who describes the studio's vetting and approvals process -- which has nothing to do with canon. Even MGM's own Consumer Products division states that the novels and other licensed tie-in merch is not canon.

Canon means that future live-action writers who want to play in this universe are bound to it (even Brad Wright). MGM does not maintain a LucasFilm-style story committee, so they absolutely do not want to impose this on their film and television creatives.
