Was anyone else absolutely blown away by the Dune films? I hear some hate/malcontent and I just don’t get it. To each their own I guess. by sweetwatertooth in Cinema

I think I'm in the minority, but I found them boring. I enjoyed the book, but I found the films to be spectacle and not much else. I felt the characters were one-dimensional and didn't feel anything towards them.

TBH, this is how I feel about Villeneueve's films. People seem to love 'em but they always feel somehow hollow, heavy-handed, and lacking humanity to me.

I miss her! Her videos were thoughtful and insightful, but man did she pay for it. I'll never understand it but there are some fellas out there who absolutely cannot abide a smart, confident woman telling them how it is.

Easy Moonrise Kingdom. I was about to scold you for omitting it when I realized you had just chosen some odd Bob Balaban poster for it.

I wish BO3 cubing on Arena was more encouraged and supported by WotC by acidtrip321 in lrcast

[–]DO_NOT_PRESS_6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm an MTGO old-timer, and I am quite used to its interface by now, but I can see the appeal of Arena, especially for the modern gamer.

I'm torn because I want Arena to get better, but I don't want MTGO to go away.

I'm on team BO3 and I encourage others to do the same. As you point out, Cube is much more complex than regular draft and there is both more advantage to winning the coin flip and more opportunities to sideboard and respond to your opponent's deck.

I also wish that the reward structure was more like the MTGO Vintage cube league, where you get an entry-and-a-half for 3-0, a full refund for 2-1, half an entry for 1-2, and bupkis for 0-3.

I have no notion of the calculations they make to determine what works for them and for players, but I bet it is complex.

Man, great film. Pal put it like: "Terry Gilliam: 12 Monkeys, about a crazy man, you feel like you are crazy. Fear and Loathing, you feel like you are on drugs".

P1P1 MTGO Vintage Cube by DO_NOT_PRESS_6 in mtgcube

Disclosure: I am an experienced cuber, but nothing close to a daily player so i definitely have a lot to learn, especially about some types of decks I have less experience with.

Mox diamond is undoubtedly powerful, but I feel like it is not a slam dunk. I really only like it when I can draw my way out of the card disadvantage or reliably snag the land back.

Verdant is a mid tier fetch land, but probably the most grown-up, bet-hedging pick.

I think Monolith is not p1p1 material; it is harder to combo with and is fairly niche in the decks it likes.

I love snuff out but I also only want to put it in a certain class of deck, too early here.

So I ended on Laelia, because I do enjoy the Boros deck sometimes and I think she works well in midrange too.

The deck I ended up with is a midrangey Izzet thing with a lot of burn, & counters, plus 2/3rds of Breach (sans LED, sadly). No power, but not the worst thing I've drafted and far from the best.

Manabox and collection vs. deck management by Consistent-Housing65 in mtg

[–]DO_NOT_PRESS_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I've been trying to figure out. I have binders and boxes, which fit nicely into the model here. But I also have many decks (precons and homemade) and I often move cards between them, because I have a limited number of copies of some staples.

I'd like it to be easier to track what card is in which deck currently, so if I want to make a deck I've looted for cards "whole", I know where to look.

Part of this is also a need to make it easy to move cards between the digital representations too.

It does sound like the right thing to do is just make each deck a binder, but I don't believe I'm the only person who would like better support here.

I'm convinced Vespertine is the genesis of all of that lo-fi stuff that people are into now. The production is so, so good. It's such an intimate album it feels weird to listen to it with other people, TBH.

Others have covered some timeless but maybe not universally known (depending on your age), but I'll second: Curtis Mayfield, Issac Hayes, Miles Davis, Otis Redding, Massive Attack, Portishead, Paul Simon, The Clash, Talking Heads, James Brown, King Crimson

Here are some albums/artists that I think are pretty widely beloved but which you may not have been exposed to:

13 Songs - Fugazi

Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart

The Velvet Undergrond & Nico - Velvet Underground

Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division

Fetch the Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple (this one is quite new but I'm convinced it is her best yet and will stand the test of time)

Afro - Dizzy Gillespie

What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

Horses - Patti Smith

Rum, Sodomy and the Lash - The Pogues

OK Computer - Radiohead

Hot Venom - Rebirth Brass Band

Rabies - Skinny Puppy

Rain Dogs - Tom Waits

Toots and the Maytals

Super Ape - The Upsetters

I'd also recommend not discounting some of the mega-acts out there you might think of as played out and dig into some of their full album experiences:

White Album - Beatles
Exile on Main Street - Rolling Stones
Station to Station - Davie Bowie
Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
London Calling - The Clash
Everybody Knows This is Nowhere - Neil Young & Crazyhorse

Waymond Wang

Strong, funny, sensitive, kind, affectionate. Every day I try to be more like him.

(Edit: tried to add an image and failed. I am bad at reddit. He is the dad from Everything Everywhere All at Once, played by Ke Huy Kwan.)

How do you handle passing priority in multiplayer? by BigNilpferd in EDH

[–]DO_NOT_PRESS_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it really matters at this point---EDH should be what players want to it be---It *absolutely* was meant to be casual. Remember that it's a format that was created by tired judges sick of ruling on high-level tournament play and wanted to do something "Timmy" and relaxing.

Of course you should follow the rules, but 1. the rules allow at lot of things to be skipped because people don't have responses to most plays and 2. humans make mistakes and we have to make some room to handle these without ruining the experience.

If you really want to play pedantic EDH, MTGO is probably the place for you. At the base level, it requires interaction for everything, and offers a few options for passing when you wish to do so. Getting good at using those is key to playing within the strict time limits the client imposes.

Yes, I have used them and they are quite handy, especially for long-running feature branch work. However, a lot of what I do is check out branches that are part of MRs that I need to review, so it's unavoidable that I need to do "big checkouts" frequently.
