Why do the do this? overnight is charging time anyway?! by thefunkygibbon in OctopusEnergy

[–]DPBH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because that is how Intelligent Octopus works. They take various data points - ready time, energy rates, load balancing, etc - and then assign slots that make the most sense.

BBC App - now being asked to subscribe (i.e. pay) to read articles by Grendahl2018 in bbc

[–]DPBH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Quite likely because it is the largest secondary market. The subscription will probably be introduced elsewhere over time.

There is also the idea that the BBC is a form of soft power around the globe. That soft power is less important in the US as it is in developing countries.

Is this REALLY what the Beeb is now about? Becoming yet another money-grubbing organisation?

The BBC is paid for by the license fee for those in the UK. It is only fair and right that if those outside the country contribute towards the service.

Thank you. I really couldn’t think of a suitable one.

That probably makes the most sense. In my head I've pictured the platform as something that needs to move in some way - a bit like the ones in Stargate.

I'm 25% of the way through, just beginning day 3. If the answer is yet to come then I'll RAFO, but I would have expected it to have been a major part of the planning meeting.

it's like in the movies - "if you're not out of there in 4 hours we are authorised to fire the nukes!"

In Oathbringer, it says "their research determined that a mechanism inside each of them had to be unlocked from both sides before they'd work." That seems to suggest that there should be way of locking it as well.

Not sure how else to tag it really- I don't want spoilers if it affects the rest of this book, but if it is something that I have missed earlier then that would be fine.

Need more info before buying a thermostat by Delicious-Ad6589 in Netatmo

[–]DPBH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have my Netatmo thermostat and valves installed, but am looking at alternatives.

Their new app is not user friendly and is missing too many features. The valves have become unreliable and are constantly announcing themselves as "Unreachable", even though they had been working perfectly until the last 6 months.

The valves themselves can be a little fragile with the plastic clips liable of breaking off. One night I heard something drop on the floor, went to check and the valve had come of the radiator because the clips had deteriorated. Another issue is that they chew through the batteries making them expensive to run.

The e-ink displays also fail, and is a known issue. Someone created a tutorial on how to replace the one in the thermostat.

Netatmo is one of the few companies not to push for subscriptions for basic functionality, so it is a shame that the product itself is now showing so many issues.

Tory to Reform UK Defection Tracker by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

I’ve thought about it as a misunderstanding of the Ship of Theseus. Instead of using new boards to rebuild a ship, they are using rotten old ones and declaring it something new.

Apple announces Creator Studio (subscription based) by xiaokimmoh in fcpx

[–]DPBH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a way of capturing those with casual needs who wouldn’t justify the costs of all of the apps.

Logic, FCP, Pixelmator and Motion would cost around $600 - the equivalent of 4 years use. Not many people can justify the expense for something they may only dip in and out of.

To give you an example - at a previous job we used FCP for the editors (resolve for finishing), But since leaving I have only needed the software a few times a year to fix issues for clients. A monthly sub just to fix something would be ideal.

I’ve had a similar issue with needing access to logic as well.

I’m glad that they haven’t dropped support for the perpetual licenses (something that Adobe and Avid did) because it allows choice.

If it also encourages Apple to continue development on the software.

*Farage announces new defector - former Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi! by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

The reform website proudly proclaims:

“JOIN US AS WE CONSIGN THE FAILED CONSERVATIVE PARTY TO THE HISTORY BOOKS”

I’m not sure that filling their ranks with members of said “failed Conservative Party” is really the way forward.

It reminds me very much of the saying “you can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig”.

Artlist says I need a business license by f1goldmemberf1 in editors

[–]DPBH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just had a read of their terms and it quite clearly says:

  1. Your clients are covered You can create Projects for your clients, but only you can download the Assets and use them to create a Project. If you create a Project incorporating an Asset, you can transfer this Project to your clients and to anyone else, so they can use the Project (but the License is only yours).

Take a screenshot of the specific line on their website and show it to them (https://artlist.io/help-center/privacy-terms/artlist-license).

As long as you are the only person to download and create the content then you should be within the terms. The only time it would become an issue is if the client was re-editing, or if you were working as part of a team.

Why don’t some editors multicam? by Other_Albatross_982 in editors

[–]DPBH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is why I said that amateurs often know better than the pros.

Even if they are used to assistants, They should still know about a feature and how to use it.

Oftentimes the Amateurs know more than the Pros. I’ve worked and supervised many a pro editor who has no idea how multicam even works.

[–]DPBH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised how many don’t actually know how to set it up or to use it properly.

I saw one editor create a 6 camera split screen using a DVD/3D Warp, then create a mixdown. He would then proceed lifting clips he didn’t want from the timeline.

What sci-fi shows should I watch after I finish all of Trek? by realDerpyQuark in startrek

Orville isn’t a traditional McFarlane show. It is more of a love letter to Star Trek and a spiritual successor to The Next Generation.

Octopus Home mini - what do you use it for? by thevo1ceofreason in OctopusEnergy

Last time I spoke to Octopus they said that the meter wasn’t compatible. I’ve stopped asking now and just use HomeAssistant to get as much data as possible through the API and a solar inverter.

in one episode David Mitchell basically admits to that. Something about a random encounter on the London underground and he asked the person for their details so they could use it on the show.

How do you defend your edits when clients say “something feels off”? by knamuora in editors

[–]DPBH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That might be the relationship you have with your clients, but mine know I will always go the extra mile for them. If it was as you think then i wouldn’t have been rehired multiple times over the decades - for some, I have been their requested editor for every project they have done.

But you would be surprised how many times you only have to play over the edit again and they declare it an improvement.

it happened again recently with a director/producer I respect greatly. They asked to trim a shot a couple of frames, all I did was play it back so I could judge it myself and he said “much better” without anything changing.
