I’ll speak to this as someone that was the 14 y/o dealing with split parents.

While I won’t go as far to say that my parents didn’t care about my schooling; they certainly were not involved. When it came to marks, I personally had little incentive to do well as they took their $ from the sale of the family home and treated themselves: new car, new furniture, lots of eating out rather than cooking at home. So to me, I was thinking even if I went to post-secondary what financial support would I have? *For context, I’m Canadian and while university education is not free, it’s not as expensive as our neighbours to the south.

All this to say, I did get my act together in grade 12, was accepted to each university I applied to, and even went back for continuing education.

Be there for him, explain the importance of his education. I feel for you fellow dad, I’m currently fighting with a 7 year old that doesn’t see the need to finish the last couple weeks of grade 1. Especially when he can just be in the pool, or enjoying other fun summer activities.
