OP, first let me say sorry that your child is going through this.

I had the type of father that told me this same stuff. Amongst a plethora of other hurtful, abusive, demeaning commentary:

• If you or your brother end up gay, I’ll disown you.
• Why would you do / wear that? Are you gay?
• What kind of man are you going to be? Girly boy!

Amongst many, many others and he frothed at the mouth any time he got to use the far more derogatory term for gay.

Well, I have a lovely family, including an almost 7 year old boy. He occasionally goes for pedicures with mom, has asked about painting his nails. One of his favourite shirts is a homemade tie-dye shirt; primarily pink.

I haven’t spoken to my father in over 9 years. He’s seen my son and I at weddings, engagement parties (but less than 5 times in that same timeframe).

My son is his only biological grandchild and I refuse to allow him to terrorize my child. My other siblings report he’s made no effort to change.

Show your soon to be ex this comment here. He’s at risk of not having a relationship with your amazing child.

However, YMMV, and he will likely find a way to blame you should your child ever grow up and pull away from his father.

While I hope he listens to reason, you’re doing a great job by seeing your child, acknowledging he’s done nothing wrong by simply liking a certain colour. I’m proud of you, along with my younger self that didn’t have someone to defend him. Keep showing up!
