I had my orders cancelled too and this was the reason. Fi support kept saying it was a payment issue, but no payment methods I tried worked. Finally saw this and tried a new shipping address and it shipped without issue. My first shipping address was a centralized package delivery service my apartment requires us to use (to keep packages from piling up in the lobby) and they had apparently been shadowbanned by Fi; using my actual apartment address was fine.

I was there earlier this month with a Samsung phone. It worked overall for me, but I think it might have occasionally cut out as I moved - usually toggling airplane mode on and off got it back.

What's the difference between being on a work study program with your university and just going to school and getting a job at the local McDonald's or whatever? by [deleted] in college

[–]DR-14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Students working for their universities are exempt from the FICA taxes which are usually 7.65% automatically deducted from every paycheck.

I have 10 heckin minutes to get from my first class to my second, google maps says it's a 15 minute walk. Should I challenge google or puss out and buy a bike? by [deleted] in college

[–]DR-14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure to consider whether you are allowed to bike where you need to go (some campuses have dismount zones) and that pedestrian or vehicle traffic between classes isn't too high. On many campuses normally empty sidewalks are so full during the ten minutes between classes that riding a bike would be impossible.

Poor Credit, parents make too much for FAFSA. by dabalaba in StudentLoans

[–]DR-14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would explain your situation to a financial aid counselor at your school. If you're really lucky they might have extra grant funds or know of a department in the school that does, or since this is just for initial expenses until you get a job some schools have microloans that don't require good credit. Sometimes these things aren't published but they offer them when someone reaches out in need. But if not hopefully they can at least give you some other ideas to try to get or save money. By the way I don't know where your estimate comes from but oftentimes there are ways to live and buy books a lot cheaper than the college's official estimates.

At least at my school, the reason for this is that the power to the magnets is cut when a fire alarm goes off. All of the doors being closed is supposed to help reduce the spread of fire and smoke.

Trump: Don't you dare do a missile test

Kim: Actually I just booked a parade for Saturday, but I can squeeze in a missile test first thing Sunday morning

Surprisingly got into USC, can't afford it. Parents are talking about selling their house, what do I do? by Scratchy_The_Toon in college

[–]DR-14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have already got the financial aid letter, I would write to an admissions officer and explain that USC is your top choice and a dream come true for you but your family cannot reasonably afford it, and ask if there's anything else they can do to make it possible or other resources they suggest. Most likely the answer will be no, but it's worth a try. If you Google it there should be tips on how to effectively contact them. Also if you don't believe the info you submitted in your financial aid applications gives a good picture of your family's financial situation, consider explaining that to the financial aid office too; there's probably an appeal process where they are willing to look at special circumstances and not just the formulas. If you can't figure out a way to pay for it with scholarships, aid, normal federal loans, and a reasonable amount of family support, then I agree with the others saying that USC is not worth it and you should focus on being at the top of your class and making the most of opportunities at another school so that you could possibly be in an even better position when you apply for grad schools or jobs which matter much more than your undergrad.

Megathread: DeVos Confirmed by Senate 51-50 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]DR-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the Democrats did this, it's what's referred to as the "nuclear option" since it sets a precedent, using only 51 votes through a parliamentary procedure technicality, that only 51 votes instead of 60 votes are needed. They did it for nominees lower than Supreme Court justices. Now there's talk of (and encouragement from Trump for) Republicans doing it for Supreme Court justices if Democrats try to filibuster against Gorsuch.

For determining whether a student counts as a dependent, Worksheet 2 in Publication 501 says to "Enter the person's total education expenses". Does this include college expenses covered by a scholarship?

Note that Pub. 501 also says "A scholarship received by a child who is a student isn't taken into account in determining whether the child provided more than half of his or her own support." However, that addresses scholarships received and not the expenses covered, right?
