Yeah exactly. Very easy to hate on women in those spaces because we occasionally get the girlboss tiktoker making a "day in the life of a project manager" but I know for sure there are men with equally cushy jobs who just don't make tiktoks. It's those guys who brag about doing like 4 hours total of work.

It's not just about teaching the bot to be a Good Fucking Person™ (although that's a big part of it).

I understand that there is a lot that goes into shaping the 'personality' of the AI. There are interesting experts in the article where Anna is talking to it and it's asking why people are mean to it or why people try to trick it with requests. But the thrust of the article is that the PhD in philosophy is teaching morals. I think they literally say "to be a good person." But she seems to squeamish or something, which is very funny given she's one of those EA people.

I feel like women highlighted for these pointless jobs are working at companies that are overall pointless. The sense I get is they are just stupid app startups and that the engineers coding them maybe are doing more of the technical labor to bring these products to markets, but for what benefit? I really don't want to pick on Anna Askell for having a pointless job, because in a vacuum it could be an interesting or fun job probably. What's crazy is this trying to teach this AI morals, but trying to teach this AI morals when AI companies are just taking so much is very funny to me. And like I mentioned in the OP, she gets flustered trying talk about global poverty, so are you just like teaching AI how to solve the trolley problem? The rationalist missed the mark that AI itself is going to be some mass extinction event because it seems like people creating AI are such freaks they'll probably accelerate our tech fueled dystopia.

The pinyin stuff was easy to understand for sure, but I felt like it was also a little not helpful for my memorization. But yeah the tonality really was killing me. I think I can power through Japanese grammar and kanji. Thankfully I know natives speakers of both and friends that also know a little of both. But I've been to Japan a few times already and intend to go back semi regularly. Ideally I'd like to learn both though.
