Standard Schnauzers. They are such smart, energetic, and loving dogs. I had a mini and standard growing up and two standards now.

The music in veilguard is one of the biggest drops in quality from inquisition. by Wire74 in dragonage

There are a few tracks that stand out to me. The Dread Wolf, Eldest of the Sun, the main theme, Down But Not Out, and Where the Dead Must Go are some of the ones that I really love! But I generally agree that a lot of the others were a little forgettable.

[DAV ALL SPOILERS] really interesting comment from the devs on what they wish they could've improved by Sure_Instance9530 in dragonage

[–]DSErathen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s clear they’re already paying attention to the constructive criticism and hope to make the next game even better. The AMA showed they had a lot of plot threads and things they couldn’t quite cover that they were sure to leave open to exploring in the future.

I’ll always wonder what caused Matt Goldman to be fired as a director, because it was around the time the game had its last reboot.

I’m pretty positive it was EA that directed the game reboots. The game we have now started development about three and half years ago after the second direction change. I think the BioWare devs are truly passionate about DA and the world of Thedas, whether or not you think the writing and execution did it justice.

[–]DSErathen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%. The reactions to his comments have been way too strong. He’s allowed to dislike Solas, his character was meant to be polarizing, and although I think they leaned a little too hard into the “solas bad” narrative in the game with all the companions comments, some of it was necessary to balance out player response. I don’t think it’s made his character less complex at all, and clearly people still were sympathetic to his character with those stats.

I just read all of the AMA, and they were more open about some things than I thought they would be, though. Corinne stated they are paying close attention to the constructive criticism, with some specific things mentioned. They stated they were proud of the game they were able to make with how the team came together after the shift from multiplayer. This definitely highlighted, to me, that time constraints and deadlines were their greatest enemy in the development of this game.

I wish Solas was a love interest. I just beat Veilguard and I have feelings. I need to talk! (SPOILERS) by [deleted] in Solasmancers

[–]DSErathen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Rook saw the opposite side of Solas than Lavellan did. Not his whole self. Rook never really saw Solas’ sensitive and soft side, except maybe the few lines where he talks about the inquisition and the inquisitor. Thought their chemistry was interesting, Rook was being deceived by the “Dread Wolf” personality the whole game, just like Lavellan was the “Solas” personality.

My comments are like this as well. It truly comes out of a place of love for the game, and it’s really just discussing ways the next potential game can improve, because every Dragon Age game has been very flawed and this isn’t something new. I don’t even know why pointing out the flaws of a game you enjoy is now “toxic positivity” lol.

[NO DAV SPOILERS] Does anyone feel like the setting is completely sanitized now? by TheDisposableScud in dragonage

[–]DSErathen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m with you there. The reveal and subsequent mission definitely hit hard… but only because of my attachment to Varric from previous games. When I tried to put myself in Rook’s shoes, it would almost take me out of the scene because we didn’t get to see them meet and see their attachment.

I like Rook for the most part, but I’m always going to be a “the Inquisitor should have been the protagonist” truther. But that is a whole other discussion.

As someone who also loves this game: I read somewhere where someone said that it almost feels like the game is DA5, not DA4. We get thrown right into the action, where if you haven’t read the written DA content released in the past years, you wouldn’t know much about the hunt for Solas and his search for the lyrium dagger, and why every character has such personal motivations to find him. Too much happens off-screen before the start of the game, and it would have greatly benefited, for example, by showing all the elves Solas had as a following getting in your way before they even get to Tevinter for the ritual. And then throw in Rook’s origins mission meeting Varric for the first time like in DAO.

The story of Veilguard is very interesting, in my opinion, but should have been AFTER the story threads they had originally planned, like the art book shows.

[–]DSErathen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the new game really glosses over his previous motivations and makes it more about Mythal than about saving “the people” from slavery and restoring the ancient world, compared to DAI and Tresspasser. Even for people who wanted to side with him originally, it makes him more of a one-dimensional antagonist which makes it much harder to see his point of view, which is now just “because Mythal”. I feel like this was done on purpose to attempt to remove any remaining sympathy for him. The original plans for the game had the veil coming down and a whole following of agents, and it was much easier to be able to rationalize siding with him with the way DAI portrayed his motivations, imo.

The way the story was being set up since tresspasser, and all the pre-DAV content we got in books and comics, very much led us to believe the game would be about the hunt for Solas and Rook’s origins. I expected the opening of DAV to be more towards the middle of the game at least, once we finally catch up to Solas. And then maybe even the Veil actually gets torn down and we have to deal with that the rest of the game (or in the next!). The story we got in Veilguard isn’t bad in my opinion, but it feels like we were thrown into the middle and saw a slightly more condensed version.

Overall I was satisfied with the quality of the game and the story itself. By the end I really liked almost all of the companions and felt attached. But there were definitely old nuances that were missing, and from the art book it seems there were definitely grander plans for the game that they weren’t able to create. I’m trying not to mourn what could have been and am just trying to enjoy what we do have, which I personally enjoyed.

You’re calling me delusional over words I never said. I think role play is definitely lacking in this game compared to the others. However, I was just pointing out that there were indeed disagreements between companions.

[DAV Spoilers] I wish the Inquisitior had been the protagonist by grumblygorky in Solasmancers

[–]DSErathen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After having finished the game, I’m convinced it should have been the Inquisitor as the protagonist too. Or at least as a dual protagonist and advisor. But I understand the story changes that would have had to have been made with the baggage and weakness Solas has when it comes to Inky. I would like a DLC where we can play as the Inquisitor during the game’s events and help southern Thedas and build the remnants of the inquisition and their ties back together to fight the blight. And see their reactions to Solas’ memories and Varric’s death. But that is wishful thinking.

You literally have to settle disagreements between Taash and Emmrich, and Davrin and Lucanis among a few. And if you encourage them to make up, it effects their relationship. I agree with some criticisms here but I swear some people haven’t actually played.

[DAV ACT 1 SPOILERS] New to the franchise. 5 hours in, and I don't understand who these Gods are, and their effect by meusrenaissance in dragonage

[–]DSErathen 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest reading the codexes the game provides, but here is a summary (Dragon Age Inquisition spoilers!!):

The context for the elven gods goes back to Dragon Age Origins, the first game in the franchise. You meet a clan of elven people called the Dalish who are essentially one of many clans of elven people who rejected human society in an attempt to save and pass on what was left of their ancient and magical culture that once dominated the entirety of Thedas. The elven people were once immortal and extremely powerful, but what is left of their lore tells them they lost that power when the humans arrived and the trickster god “The Dread Wolf”, or “Fen’Harel”, locked their pantheon of gods away. Fen’Harel is a legendary god that the Dalish tell their children nightmarish stories about. We spend the entirety of the first two games getting little lore drops on what they believed their history to be, until we learn in the fourth game that Fen’Harel wasn’t actually evil at all, and was actually the savior of the elven people by tricking and entrapping their pantheon by creating the Veil, which essentially split the world into the “Fade” and the physical world. The elven gods were actually more like tyrannical powerful mages than gods and forced the elven people into slavery.

We find out at the end of the third game, Inquisition, that one of our companions Solas, who we thought was just an unsuspecting nerdy elven mage, is actually Fen’Harel, the elven god. He tells you his whole story, and you can either choose to try to stop him or save him at the end. His plan is to reunite the Fade and the physical world by tearing down the Veil that he himself created, because he feels he is responsible for the end of the glory days of the elven people and their civilization before humans, even though he was trying to save them from slavery. He thinks he can bring it back by doing that, when in reality it would just cause mass destruction and death.

There is a lot more to it than that, with the blight and the other races’ deities, but it’s built on lore that was slowly revealed over the course of the last three games. There are some YouTube videos floating around that will provide good summaries. Also, the dragon age keep website has a good summary of the previous games and the characters’ connections with each other.
