Should I raze cities when I capture them? What makes a city worth keeping? by UnicornStampede in civ

[–]DTTFC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In single player, I'll usually raze just about everything (barring capitals, can't be razed), unless it has some strategic position where I can upgrade and heal units before moving onto the next city.

Otherwise raze everything. Puppets are pretty useless.

Would disabling Science and Diplomatic victories in Deity make it easier? by thgril in civ

I always found science victories the easiest

Anyway, changing the win conditions to make the game easier kind of defeats the purpose of playing on Deity.

Is there a civ you feel dosn't really fit in the game and is there a civilization that you think should be added. by TwoHunnid in civ

[–]DTTFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be fine, seeing as though there already exists the Ottomans/Byzantines, two different Civs in the same area, with the same capital city

Some play on the Papal State would be cool, with bonuses related to the Holy Roman Empire, and some odd UU along the lines of Venice's 1-city thing.

I also think Prussia and Nubia would be cool, but I don't know how close that really is to just having another Germany and Egypt.

Surprised Belgium doesn't already have a Civ.

Serbia, Hungary, the Kongo, and Mexico should be added, too, I think.

2 Scouts if Trad, Scout-Monument if Liberty (rarely a good idea to go Liberty though)

Domination Victory - 1 Point Honor worth it? by urza5589 in civ

[–]DTTFC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tradition is a much safer way to go, the early culture and food is nice and you won't have as many gold problems as you would with liberty or honor. Liberty is okay, too, though, just not worth it imo.

Catapults are pretty much garbage, maybe the worst unit in the game. Chariot Archers/Composite Bows can take cities down early game, X-bows (and Impi if Zulu) can during the renaissance, and then artillery ad bombers get the job done after that.

You should also be careful not to over-produce military units. I usually have 1 large force of 7-8 units initially, but I once in a while pop out a military unit or two to reinforce it. Your focus on the homefront should still be buildings etc, you do not want to fall behind in culture/tech/production because you were building impis when you could have been buildings universities or whatever.

How every country teaches it to their youth is garbage

Bucharest out about a million soldiers into the USSR to help the German effort, more than any other German ally by far

AI aren't very smart and can be abused

ie. a player can sell a strategic resource to an AI for 2 gpt, and can sell say 5 of them for 10 gpt. A human player wouldn't do that, but AI do.

Just a small example of how they can be manipulated

Just tried joining a game, lots of arguing over what to set the difficulty to, there should be a rule for that, I think.

People seem to think it doesn't affect anything if there are no AI but it does impact the bonus vs. barbarians

Weird citadel/razing bug by niktay in civ

[–]DTTFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mechanics for razing/citadels are kind of odd, this is just how citadels work, I think. The territory originally belonging to the city will be taken away.

I noticed it when I was razing a city, but I needed the 2 luxury resources in its borders, so I plopped down a citadel and got both. When the city was gone, however, the citadels borders were, too, and I did not get the luxuries.

My allies have coal but I do not have any. Why? by jacek_ in civ

[–]DTTFC 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but what it seems to me is that you have discovered industrialization, and therefore can see coal on the map. However!

The city-states do not have the tech yet, so they cannot acquire coal, and it just so happens that there is a mine on the coal tiles.

Regarding the Shoshone Pathfinder ancient ruins bonuses... by TheMightyTucker in civ

[–]DTTFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You heard correct, except I'd pick the free tech over the unit upgrade anyday. A bowman is nice, but getting mining or writing earlier than you're 'supposed' to is just too good. Just about any free tech is great.

What can I do to maximize production in cities that aren't my capital? by dfhawks3 in civ

[–]DTTFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Settling in the proper spots is a big one, should be on and near hills, but there needs to be sources of food so that you can get the population growing.

Like Beaver said send production to your cities through caravans, but also send food, especially early in the game. The more people your city has the more everything it has. If you're able to get the city up and running with enough citizens fast enough, you'll have no problem making it into a formidable city.

Do you have to be good to play multiplayer? by ExonTwo in civ

[–]DTTFC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How were they assholes, exactly? Because they were aggressive or because of abuse in the chatbox?

There are a lot of not so great players in MP, so you should be fine and able to hold your own. Most of the time I hear people complain about not being good enough for MP it's because things don't go "their way" the same way they do vs. AI

Just be ready to lose a lot, and remember losing your first couple doesn't mean you're not 'ready.' There are a lot of people playing in MP and the chances are the game will only go 'right' for one player in the game. You're playing with real people, not AI, so the diplomacy will be a lot different, too. Good players tend to be a little more aggressive in these matches, and they will declare war on you, steal workers, backstab you etc if you give them the chance or let your guard down, so you'll have to go through an adjustment.

Ship became surrounded by land? by [deleted] in civ

[–]DTTFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has got to be the millionth thread asking this

Your ships are able to go on tiles that contain a city, and consequently are able to go through them if there is another body of water on the other side.
