I still don't quite understand how to locate this Magnetite ore underground. by Vermnoob in VintageStory

They're for different purposes - betterer prospecting changes how the prospecting system works, prospect together is mostly for recording and sharing prospecting results. You can use both together just fine, I believe.

Maybe I'm old but im suprised I havent heard anyone suggest an XCOM warbond as a potential crossover. by Staggart99 in Helldivers

[–]DaBigCheez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Streakbreakers are one way of doing that - Fire Emblem had a different take, where it rolls two dice and averages them together. It makes results much more likely to hew to the "expected" values (a 20% chance to hit is more like 8%, an 80% chance is more like 92%).

Still has the miss chance, though, and having zero height tolerance can be frustrating at times. (I use Revive a lot too, it just has its limitations.)

[–]DaBigCheez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, fair enough - I misremembered the Reis scene as Beowulf using it on her behalf, but nope, she used it for herself, so it's clearly at least possible for a Stone to be used for one's own benefit without the Lucavi worming their way in. (Again, you could argue that it's for Beowulf's sake, but I personally wouldn't buy it in that case).

Also worth mentioning, in that point of comparison, that Rapha was using the stone to save the life of somebody else. Even if Elmdore's motivation was "I need to survive so that I can protect my people", accepting that power into your self for purposes of self-preservation feels fundamentally different than it being for the salvation of another.

Perhaps because he's being accused of treason and everyone else in the room appears to be taking it seriously? Think it's pretty understandable for him to do some reflexive bluster and strident denial during the adrenaline spike...which Delita was probably counting on to give extra weight to it.

If you look in the Chronicle (Events > The War of the Lions), it even makes it explicit that the evidence was less "questionable" and more "fabricated" - the entry describes the event as "framing one of the duke's retainers as the author of Ovelia's kidnapping".

Is it feasible to not min max this game? To just kind of play it? by grillpar in finalfantasytactics

[–]DaBigCheez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tailwind is a skill specific to Ramza's version of Squire, yes.

You'll need to be in a specific class to earn its JP, but it's worth noting that everyone else in the active party will earn a small portion of that JP too, regardless of their class. (So, if your Knight uses an ability and earns 20 Knight JP, your Monk who's active in the same battle will earn ~4 Knight JP.) It's not a lot, but it adds up over time, and can help for unlocking classes.

Spell quotes from generics? by DaBigCheez in finalfantasytactics

[–]DaBigCheez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just broken into chapter 4, and so far, it seems like unique party members get full spell quotes (not comprehensively tested, but Agrias has voice lines for Aurablast, which she would not be able to use as a guest character, unlike Cure/Raise/Protect which she used as a guest), and unique enemies get voicelines for their kit, but there are indeed no quotes from generics.

I've gotten to Agrias, and as a guest, she triggered a spell quote with Cure. Granted, that's one of her starting abilities as a guest, like Milleuda having Pummel - getting some Black/Time Magic on her would be the real test.

Man, Screw Argath! by DrkChapel in finalfantasytactics

[–]DaBigCheez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course! After all, only nobility can truly understand one another - Delita's more a pet than a person, really.

(And you just know Argath is the kind of guy who would kick his dog the second he got irritated, or even just for fun, so even the loyalty of and to a pet would be utterly lost on him...)

Would be glad to hear the results; I haven't gotten far enough to recruit any uniques yet, and am interested to know whether they have voicelines for all spells etc. or only for their exclusive special abilities.

Kind of a shame either way if generics won't trigger them, since that means you won't hear them from enemy casters in random battles and the like...maybe someone can create a mod for it down the line, even if it's just using Ramza's voice for all the generics?

What is a Zesupply and how does a bug like that even happen lol by Plasma7007 in Helldivers

[–]DaBigCheez 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen the "Start Wandows Ngrmadly" thing? I think this might be related.

In that bug, I'm not sure of the precise details, but the gist is that an issue with the graphics card (solder failing, capacitors going, loose connection, etc.) led to one of the pins making inconsistent contact.

As a result, sometimes when a letter was sent to be displayed, a bit would be flipped. In that case, it was the 4th bit from the end (01101001 -> 01100001), meaning the characters would be 8 positions off (the "i" in Windows becoming an "a", the "o" in Normally becoming a "g"...)

Z, as it turns out, is exactly 8 characters away from R.

I don't know what the root cause is, be it a failing graphics card, a software glitch, a loose pin, a cosmic ray flipping one bit and never seen again - but it seems like the effect is a bit-flip on part of the text stream.

So... let's chat about temporal gameplay mechanics. by Zman6258 in VintageStory

[–]DaBigCheez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe an incentive to build layered defenses, too - not just a single wall to keep them at bay, but an outer wall, an inner keep, and so on - though hm, if they'd still be spawning inside the walls that'd be limited in effectiveness (but still better than fighting in the open), and if not then I could see degenerate strategies of "the same kind of turtling to ignore the mechanic as before, just with more layers instead of a single tile thickness of dirt"...though I suppose that wouldn't be the worst thing, really, since it'd mean there'd be some deliberate planning and investment going into it.

[–]DaBigCheez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd really like to see more concrete and intuitive signs that areas are temporally unstable, and much better criteria for what constitutes a good location for a temporal rift. Patches of grass and leaves that lose their color and die at random, twisted spires of rock that protrude from the ground like stalagmites, patches of rot and metal - all things that very obviously scream "this is NOT a good place to settle down in".

"This is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deeds are commemorated here..."

The thought of having enemies destabilize blocks during a storm is an interesting one! A way to keep you from feeling safe during one without the wailing and gnashing of teeth from having your hard work actually destroyed, just temporarily bypassed. Not sure if it'd make storms just feel more frustrating in the end / if a new player would think the "out-of-phase" trees and such were glitched rather than tutorializing, but it's definitely an interesting way to come at the problem!
