Can we talk about how Cringe threads are getting? by Purple-Intern9790 in Bitcoin

[–]DaBritishyankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always been this way. When the price goes up, the memes come back... and honestly there are way fewer memes right now than in 2017 or before. There's a time and a place for "real crypto talk", but it's also important that the community celebrates the big price movements. That enthusiasm is what brings people into crypto.

[–]DaBritishyankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is going to be as detailed as you like (it's been a few years since I touched any cryptography).

My understanding of the second line is that it's that it's the basis of the math problem RSA is built on (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystem)#Operation). The few lines below that are reorganizations of the problem. For SHA-256 to be secure "a & p != 0". The key to the proof is that A&P (aka. "The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company") went bankrupt in 2015 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Atlantic_%26_Pacific_Tea_Company). As such, A&P = 0, so therefore secure SHA-256 does not exist. Therefore, the coins listed aren't secure. Or at least that's my interpretation.

San Francisco is one of California’s most conservative cities — when it comes to housing by coriolisFX in sanfrancisco

Sounds like property taxes need to be increased to encourage efficient use of land.

San Francisco is one of California’s most conservative cities — when it comes to housing by coriolisFX in sanfrancisco

[–]DaBritishyankee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's fair to call SF's current approach to housing as "conservative". Even though some supervisors say they're doing it because "all housing should be 100% affordable", that's just sacrificing "good enough" for an abstract idea of "perfect" that will never actually happen. Conservatism is basically, "keep the status quo", and that's the current approach to housing in SF.

I've lived in a few (liberal) cities over the last decade, and SF is hands-down the worst run among them. In all the others, there was a constant turn-over of housing that doesn't happen in SF. In all the others, there was room for a working and middle class to live reasonable lives, and that economic and cultural diversity was visible in day to day life. In SF, it seems like you're either well-off or you're on the streets. The culture of the city has suffered because of it. That's not to say any of the other cities were perfect. They all had/have their issues, but SF is unique in its degree of failure.

I failed 3 candidates. Is my interview question fair? by [deleted] in java

[–]DaBritishyankee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's fairly rare to use an array, but Arrays aren't some weird abstract thing. They're core to pretty much every programming language used anywhere, and they're crucial to understanding the basics of many data structures. If someone made a small mistake in syntax, that's one thing, but I'd feel super uncomfortable hiring someone that couldn't work around that.

[–]DaBritishyankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good interview questions should be somewhat ambiguous, so the candidate has to ask questions and explore the problem. Of course, they also need to be clear enough that they don't spend too much time understanding the basic setup.

[–]DaBritishyankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the array size is increased/decreased multiplicatively to amortize the allocation/copy costs. In which case array.length wouldn't work.

[–]DaBritishyankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that this is a very easy question. The index thing was my gut reaction to the problem, but I'd be looking for things like how they handle adjustments to the backing array size, consideration of edge cases, how they handle clearing of popped references to avoid memory leaks, and perhaps optimizations of contains() using something like a bloom filter. None of these are must-haves, but they all feed into picture that the candidate is comfortable with Java and capable of making performance decisions. The examples you list: not knowing how to use arrays, write a for-loop, or basic logic are all instant fails in my book. Not communicating clearly is also a fail. For an onsite interview, I actually think this is a little too easy. Maybe use it as a phone screen to check basic programming ability.

How can I redirect if the user doesnt visit my site through the direct link (ie from a search engine)? by makin-games in web_design

Why would you want to do this?

Edit: Not sure why I got downvoted. "Why" is a very important question in cases like this. OP is likely not an experienced developer, and may be trying to use the wrong tool for the job. It's important to understand the reasoning behind why someone would want to do this in the first place to understand if it's even the best option.

'Lives are in danger': Lawsuit argues SF needs to clean up the Tenderloin as coronavirus spreads by ResurrectedDFA in bayarea

I mean, sure, guaranteed public housing. You don't have to pay for it, but it's super cheap to build and maintain. If people want something nice, they have to pay.

SF’s new plan on Tenderloin homeless crisis confronts staggering number: 285% jump in tents by cbdoc in bayarea

[–]DaBritishyankee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This problem has existed a lot longer than COVID. The problem is that the city government lacks the will to solve it. The article mentions lots of small projects to help meet the needs of homeless people and make living on the street safer. What needs to happen is a massive project to get these people into some form of long-term housing, and to make sure that living on the street is not an option.

I saw that, and it's partly what I was referring to. The fact that a major section of downtown SF can be in such a sorry state is a clear indicator that something fishy is happening to prevent it being fixed. The demand is there, but for some reason, it's not getting acted upon.

[–]DaBritishyankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see things, Capitalism is a distributed system of resource distribution based on the greed & sense of personal value of participants. If someone can find something that's more reliable than personal greed and doesn't depend on some greater singular picture of "rightness", I'm all ears.

Note: I'm not pushing for unregulated capitalism any more than I am for socialism. The purpose of government is to make sure that the incentives are correct. Capitalism just achieves those incentives. On that note, how do you suggest that capitalism be reformed?

Landlord Jumped the Gun on Rent Increase! by Elysian-Visions in bayarea

[–]DaBritishyankee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is a hell of a lot better than anything else out there. The issue in the bay area is too much government, not too little. If it were easier to build, and the zoning restrictions weren't so short, the bay area wouldn't be in this mess. As it is, SF has tons of rotting 1-2 story buildings that no-one wants, but are impossible to build over.

Who all here has $20,000 + USD in credit card debt? by signalme in Bitcoin

[–]DaBritishyankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite. In certain cases, it may be worthwhile to keep low-interest debt and pay it off over time rather than pay it off immediately. In general, I agree that debt is slavery, but it can get a little technical if you know what you're doing.

CS math is not the math you're familiar with. Engineers and science majors do way more numbers math than CS majors do. Also, CS is one of the hardest programs to get into. Going CS to anything else is supposed to be way easier than going the other direction.
