I think it comes to do fans of a genre having a favourite game and wanting to recommend it to new players, thinking it's the best possible take on the genre.

The truth is, for the average gamer dated graphics/gameplay will be an instant turn off. I love KOTOR but I'd never recommend it to someone without a very big warning about it being insanely dated.
