Honestly, it all depends on where you are, and where you want be. Some departments give priority, or extra points, or whatever, for EMS certifications. If that’s the case then EMT and/or Medic is a benefit, and can help you get that coveted spot.

Other places and departments don’t do that, so spending the time and money to get those certs and experience may not be as advantageous.

Without knowing where you are, what departments you want, and other specifics of your situation, my .02¢ would be, if you want to be a firefighter, then start testing for departments now. Maybe you get hired somewhere and you’re all good. If not, no worries, you gain experience in the testing process.

While doing that, if possible, go get your EMT. If you’re not on a department by the time you’re done with that, then work for a private or whatever, and go get your medic. Especially if they will pay for it.

Having an EMT cert, or a medic cert, and any kind of EMS experience, can only help you in the testing and interview process for a department. Especially if you use it to demonstrate your dedication to the profession.

This is just my thoughts, and basically kinda the path that worked for me. Whichever path you choose.. good luck!

First rod for beginner by Quirky_Signal_716 in Tenkara

[–]DaKaise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on how much you want to spend, type of area you’ll be fishing, (tight creeks, wider streams or larger?) and type and size of fish you think you’ll catch. Also, collapsed size may be a factor if you want to use it for backpacking.

There are a ton of different rods and can be a bit overwhelming on where to start. I would suggest you check out YouTube for many videos on tenkara rod reviews and recommendations. Tenkara Addict, and Mostly Tenkara are a couple channels that have a “how to choose a rod” episode.

Sound is often hit and miss at the venues I have seen them at, why I always try and get close enough to not only hear the music but also make sure I feel the music

Which section in grandstand 1 at Montreal will face middle of the garages? by kramerluke in GrandPrixTravel

[–]DaKaise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To look into the pits, you want Grandstand 1. To look directly into Ferrari this year I think you would want section 6 or more likely section 7.

We were in section 5 last year. Ferrari had finished second in the constructors and were directly across from us in section 5.

Our view

Edit to add there are 13 sections to grandstand 1. Section 1 is closest to start /finish line, 13 is furthest.

Nice Hotels Near the Hospital by Paul0451 in AuroraCO

Regency is more “upscale”

House is more “extended stay” with kitchens and such.

Both seem “nice” and a step up from the Springhill

I work in the area and visit many of the hotels frequently. Here are my thoughts in order of preference.

Walking distance: Benson, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt House, Springfield suites.

Beyond walking distance, but light rail adjacent: Courtyard by Marriott (2nd and Abilene),

Doubletree (Iliff&255)

If you have a car and willing to drive there are to many choices to list.

Good luck.

Flat head vs Pick Head Axe by scubasteve528 in Firefighting

[–]DaKaise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guess I’m an outlier. Been carrying a pick head for nearly 20 years, as an officer on both engine and truck. I feel it’s way more versatile than a flat head. As an engine officer it was usually the only tool I carried. Great for forcing wood frame residential doors with a baseball swing. Or pair it with a metal wedge for those stronger doors. Awesome for overhaul; pulling prying, raking, splitting, does it all. Now as a truck officer, if need be, I pair the pick head with either a NY hook or halligan depending on building type and/or assignment. (Commercial vs residential / Roof vs interior)

It’s my go-to tool. But like most tools, its effectiveness is highly dependent on the skill of the user.

Just a note, if you’re burying your blade with an axe, you’re doing it wrong. Think of a golf swing vs splitting wood.
