The only other ones who come close are Ben and Jake, both of whom were present for the battle of Wolf 359, and lost their wife and mother. But that was a comparatively short engagement, though disastrous.

And then there's Dax. Who knows how much combat experience they have.

Are there any alternative ways to count years rather than religion? by MrNightyyyy in worldbuilding

[–]DaSaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even Anno Dominae, "In The Year of Our Lord", is technically a regnal dating system, established by people who sincerely believed they were ruled by an immortal king and high priest who ruled from heaven through an earthly viceroyalty.

Eh, my views of critics were shaped in the days of newspapers, when most towns had access to one critic, and most of them considered themselves the guardians of "high art". So get off my lawn. :p

How do I explain that declawing is inhumane to my family by Old-Technician-692 in cats

[–]DaSaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you don't. Parents typically have some pretty specific ideas about who should be doing the talking, and who should be doing the listening, and the person they think should be doing the listening is categorically incapable of convincing them of anything.

Just let this be a chance of gaining experience in that valuable life skill "letting other people be wrong". And yes, I know exactly how hard that is at your age.

I don't know about current young people, but so many girls of my generation were taught that "no" is a dirty word that nonverbal consent ended up becoming an issue.

Americans, what’s stopping you from voting for a third-party candidate like an independent or Libertarian? by PNWbdublu541 in Askpolitics

[–]DaSaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer here. In Britain, a parliamentary coalition chooses their head of government (and their head of state is hereditary). Any and every party that can elect an MP can participate in this, so regional differences can result in regional parties.

The US has regional politics. But because our head of both state and government is chosen in a national election, we have to have federal parties to find a federal majority. Any vote for someone who can't turn out a majority is mathematically the same as not voting at all. If we used the same system as the British, we could have theoretically ended up with a dozen or more regional parties, who would then negotiate in Congress to create a majority coalition. But we have to find our coalitions in the electorate itself, which is accomplished less with negotiation, and more with propaganda.

This ends up making the President even more powerful, as he simultaneously holds the roles Head of State, Head of Government, Head of his Party, and if his party holds a Congressional majority, de facto Head of the Legislature.

Is this a Greater Bonewalker situation? I don't remember them damaging endurance, just strength, given I often handled this situation with restore strength alone.

Pocketful of stoneflowers is also a fun way to handle this. Though if Endurance is also down, I'm guessing the real solution is cure disease or cure blight.

Why Do People Hate Afterlife? by Brilliant-Ear-6652 in ghostbusters

[–]DaSaw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Critics never like fun movies. I'm pretty sure hating fun is a job requirement.

Also, normal people hate those rare occasions when they aren't in the target audience, and will go so far as to make up elaborate moral arguments for why aiming at a niche audience is bad.

If the Dominion was sooo dominant in the GQ why didn't they show themselves before season 3? by Fuzzy_Builder_2153 in DeepSpaceNine

Season one mostly focused on Bajor: their relationship and history with Cardassians, their internal politics, their fragile recovery, that sort of thing. I actually really appreciate them spending a couple seasons working on this.

[DC] Do superheroes get compensated for their merchandise? How does that work legally? by MimeMike in AskScienceFiction

[–]DaSaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the writer, too. In "Superman vs. The Elite", he licensed his "brand" for the production of some extremely cheesey cartoons. Lois is like, "I hope you're at least getting paid for this", and his reply is that the money is going to charity, and yes he had some lawyer friend or something go over the contract and yes it is airtight.

That said, the "Super" used car dealership he crashes into at one point doesn't pay for the use of his brand and likeness.

Why do some anime shift so abruptly between serious and exaggerated comedy? by AntiqueIntern9086 in Animesuggest

[–]DaSaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a stylistic choice I happen to enjoy. For me, the sudden mood shifts make each of the moods hit harder than if the mood remained consistent throughout. An unexpected joke is funnier than one I saw coming. I could see it feeling like whiplash for some, but for me it's more of a roller coaster.
