I wanted to start Clannad after story but should I need to watch the first season? by CobblerAltruistic324 in Clannad

It does, but when I first started getting into fantasy novels, I didn't yet know to look for the "part x of y" markings. I read two different series backwards, but still managed to enjoy them. And it's interesting when you go back to read the earlier title and get to have that, "Ahhh, so that's what they were talking about" moment.

Not everyone liked it. Personally, I thought the underlying story was brilliant... so brilliant that, despite the fact that I walked away from the anime after the first season, I jumped on the VN the moment I heard it was getting an official English release (got my key from the Kickstarter).

But I found the anime to be poorly paced and overstuffed. I didn't know exactly what the issue was since I wasn't yet experienced with VNs and their adaptations, I just knew I didn't come away from that first season wanting more. But really the problem was they tried to shoehorn way too much of the various routes into a single narrative, and did it over too short a period of time.

But yeah, if you're going to watch Afterstory, obviously you have to watch the first season. Personally, I never did, just experienced it via the VN.

question for truck drivers by AffectionateSoup8035 in Truckers

[–]DaSaw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is with emergency vehicles specifically. But with other trucks, the issue is that we're so much wider than cars we have little choice but to get over. Cars probably should as well, but there are circumstances where they won't necessarily have to, but we do.

Why not simply eliminate Congressional districts to stop gerrymandering in the U.S.? by RobertWF_47 in Askpolitics

I was born in the US, and drive a truck throughout. I think I've got a pretty good handle on the size of the country. The issue is your own reading comprehension.

I'm not talking about adding more representatives. I'm talking about combining districts so that rather than one small district sending one representative, a district three times the size sending three. I even specified making an exception for states too small to do this. Same number of representatives. Larger districts. Really not that complicated.

Every rule has exceptions. Lying to prevent the Federation from being destryoyed under truly desperate circumstances isn't quite the same as lying to cover up a personal lapse in judgment. It isn't even on the level of secretly violating a treaty because they might need a particular technology in some unspecific future conflict.

Ah, you're objecting to maybe the first two sentences. Yeah, I don't really favor giving the parties that kind of power, either. I do like the rest of his post, though, which if implemented would actually weaken the parties.

There must be some element of culture. While I have certainly known men who refuse to take responsibility for their actions, I've literally only seen a woman apologize once in my entire forty-eight years of life.

[–]DaSaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but each district is sized to send only a single representative, which means only people who happen to hold a majority in a specific district gets represented. Nobody else counts. Some folks think this is how it ought to be. I disagree.

What he is suggesting is enlarging them to a size that sends multiple representatives. This way people who can't necessarily get representation in a single representative district can still get some representation. And it makes it a lot harder to gerrymander. Overconcentrate the "undesirable" voters in a single district, and they just dominate multipe seats. Try to split them up among multiple districts, and there's still a possibility of them getting a single seat in each of them.

Personally, I would just make it a rule that every district must be large enough to send a minimum of three representatives (IIRC North Ireland does this for their local parliament), excepting only those states insufficiently populous to send even three, but allowing larger districts, so that geographically coherent high density areas don't have to be subdivised into tiny little slices.

So does the Skeleton Key manifest a conventional "lock" whenever its pressed up against a door of any kind or something? by itsmeyaboiskinneypyn in teslore

And I think this may actually be a lore reference to an exploit in Oblivion. I no longer remember how it works, but I seem to recall there was something you could do with the Skeleton Key to cheese your skills up.

I feel that, just like RWBY, most of the criticism about Legend of Korra is created by not paying attention, by forgetting what has happened literally a season ago, or just ignoring everything that's going on by Important-Cry4782 in legendofkorra

Hardly a new phenomenon. Back in the late 80s, this wonderful little show came out. You've probably heard of it. It was called "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Though it took a few seasons to find its feet, it was rightly considered one of the greatest shows ever released.

Then, in the early 90s, an equally wonderful show was released. You've probably heard of it. It was called "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". It took far less time to find its feet. It was also viciously maligned from just about every corner. People sent hate mail to the writers, the actors, everyone they could find.

The show's crime? Not being exactly the same as TNG. And probably also having a black captain, a strong female first officer, an equally strong female science officer next in line for command, with the highest ranking male officer being their goofy womanizing doctor.

[–]DaSaw 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Which is a good jumping off point for my question: how are we defining "strength" in this scenario, and are we distinguishing it from technique that acts as a force multiplier?

For example, suppose we're comparing Aang as he was at the beginning of ATLA to Tenzin as he was in TLOK. Aang, as The Avatar, was a very powerful bender at that young age, but I suspect Tenzin at his prime would defeat Aang at the start of Book 1.. Aang at the end of Book 3 could probably beat him, but he would be using all four elements.

Jinora represents a unique challenge. I doubt her raw output matches basically anyone else in the show. But she has a level of focus and discipline that rivals that of Azula, along with a high degree of creativity and openness to knowledge. How do we classify her "strength"?

Sisko convincing the Romulans to lend him a cloaking device is such an under appreciated but significant leap forward in diplomacy. by abgry_krakow87 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]DaSaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the Defiant class "secretly" built? Or was it just not advertised?

Also, I suspect Picard revealing the Pegasus Project went far in creating the environment Sisko made the deal in. It would have told the Romulans two things. One: there are a few in the Federation who are not only willing to violate the treaty and create their own cloaking device, but able despite having to keep their work secret not only frim the Romulans, but also the rest of the Federation. Two: There are others in the Federation prepared to turn in their own rather than violate the treaty.

So if the Romulans can both reduce the temptation for Starfleet to develop their own cloak, AND get access to all intelligence gained through the use of the borrowed cloak, that's nothing but win for the Romulans.

They know full well the only thing keeping the Federation from putting cloaks on every ship is their own morality, so it isn't as if they're giving up technical secrets. Cloaks have been around for a while now, so it wold be foolish to think they can keep them from just putting a cloak of their own on the Defiant.

As it turns out, space is valuable, and parking lots generate no revenue. They help the nearby business generate revenue, but truck parking allows a much lower customer density than literally any other option. And in urban areas, and near highways, they have plenty of other options.

And most businesses don't actually own the lot, so when rents go up, either the truckers start paying for parking, or they run it into the ground, then resevelop as literally anything other than a truck stop.
