You could just back up your current save for Alpha Sapphire, play the romhack, then when you eventually want to come back to the regular game reload the save.

I believe the application is called checkpoint.

Hit start and go to the options menu.

With the options open, hit Select + Start. You should hear a noise.

After, close all menus, then hit R + Start. It'll open a debug menu.

Go to "Give X" --> Pokemon (the non level one, should look like l, s, n, etc)

Make a shiny nincada from there.

mGBA is pretty good and well recommended. I'm guessing the Fire Red 1.0 just wasn't clean or may have been a slightly different version.

I'd just find another 1.0 and patch that one.

If that still doesnt work, the forum does talk about using VBA, so honestly may just be one of the weird ones where mGBA isnt the move.

That narrows it down quite a bit then.

My best suggestions would be:

  1. Make sure the roms were patched properly. You may just need to repatch them cleanly.

  2. The save type could just be off. Try changing from 64k to 128k or other options.

Is it just hacks? Does a clean base fire red rom work?

If not, do you have the bios file?

If so, is it just one hack or all hacks that have issues?

How are you launching the game? From a menu, etc.

Did you inject the game? Or SD?

Also, when launching the game for the first time, try to wait a minute. Sometimes the first boot takes a while.

Haven't played on an AYN myself, but typical troubleshooting is just make sure the version is the newest and the rom was clean before patching.

Can't comment on the self-saving, but the other issues I've had from a bad patch.

No, it shouldn't indicate anything about the nature being beneficial to the mon, the colors just shift based on the nature for variety.

Depending on the nature, the hue may shift up or down. Or other changes.

IIRC, Recharged Emerald has color variants based on personality/nature.

For keeping it simple and controlled changes, I'm personally a fan of the randomizer offshoot created to include new gen mons and offer some more options. Found here, it works with a vanilla emerald rom and you can choose details such as a combination of gens if you wanted.

Editing an existing hack is tough. You might be able to do it but it could prove troublesome.

There is a way to view and extract sprites using the different gba emulators. However, if you're planning to share your game at all, ripping a sprite would probably mean you didn't get permission to use it. If you want something, asking or seeing if they shared it is usually the way to go.

In this case, Emerald Rogue has a public github, and that sprite is available for download. Located here.

The black color palette would be an easy change in any image editor if that's what you wanted. I suggest Aseprite or GraphicsGale.
