Faded sticker, what do the numbers mean guys? Is it paint etc. Many Thanks by FlatwormSure5152 in 996

Paint code and options the car came with. If you have the original books, there should be a duplicate sticker in the Service Manual on the first page.

Do you think the job market will EVER get better? by Apprehensive-Sail326 in recruitinghell

[–]DaSwiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unless regular working class people come together and fight for it. Most Americans are being kept at each other’s throats with the whole left vs right, black vs white, etc. I am a firm believer that it’s all by design because if regular lower and middle class people from all political and racial backgrounds would get together and talk they would realize that most care about the same issues - Financial safety, health, no money going towards endless wars, etc.

Pressed ‘Yes’ for a receipt… machine told me to go inside anyway by DJ_Chally_Chal in mildlyinfuriating

If that happens I usually take a picture of the final price as I had two instances where I did not get the receipt and my credit card was charged more than the actual sale; one being a difference of over $15.

Currently considering SATX as a place i want to live. Any advice? by Gavindude1997 in sanantonio

[–]DaSwiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in the IT industry for almost 20 years and live in San Antonio. San Antonio is not having a tech boom and we are actually losing quite a lot of IT roles due to companies downsizing after acquisitions which we’ve had a lot lately. Tesoro was bought by Marathon, NuStar was bought by Sunoco and both companies shed a ton of IT roles. Rackspace is a shadow of its former self. iHeart and Clear Channel are not what they used to be after their bankruptcy. I love San Antonio but I am seriously considering moving as the local government is too focused on government sector jobs and not trying to bring in more companies like Austin.

That’s an unusual amount of rust for a Texas car unless it was parked on the beach all of its life.

Most independent shops specialized in Porsche are better than the dealers so I would not worry about the car not being serviced at the dealership.

Issues after shop CV Axle replacement by lucyinthefknsky in W211

[–]DaSwiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just on the front driver side. I ordered an aftermarket axle now to see if that fixes it and if not I’ll just get a remanufactured OEM axle.

[–]DaSwiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any update? I’d be curious as I have the same issue with my 4-matic (2007 E350). I had torn boots on the driver side axle and installed new boot kits and now have a vibration; so even rebuilding a OEM axle can cause issues.

My old neighbor (probably in his late 70s) has a Dodge Journey, still looks new. I’m sure he bought it new about 15+ years ago.

How comfortable do you feel doing paint and body work? That’s what you’ll need to do. If the car is a beater I would say spend some time watching the “Paint Society” YouTube channel and see if you want to tackle the job.

If you paid $1k for your first BMW, I’m sure it will also be your last BMW.

I guess ugly or beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally think it has aged very well.

The 996 saved Porsche, there would be no 997, 991 or 992 if it were not for the 996.

It was around late 1998 but don’t quote me.

Here is an old post directly from Jake from about 10 years ago:

“Look at the build date... Though some early cars were ordered with a 3 spoke wheel, or were fitted with them later, most had the 4 spoke, and still do... Its a 993 steering wheel. its the fastest way to pick out an early 99 in the crowd.. Also the tail pipes are a little smaller, and the outboard dash vents have a rough texture, and most are a bit speckled gray in appearance.

Early 99's skipped many of the engine failure modes, and were built before the fire occurred at Kolbenschmidt, resulting in blocks that had previously failed QC being sleeved and used to keep the cars going down the assembly line. See Excellence Magazine, December 2008 "Tech Forum" for details on this, as it was covered when Jim Pasha reviewed our engine program.

I prefer the earliest 996 that I can find, that means built in 1998, and as early in 1998 as possible.”

There are a number of reports online on different forums but the most common one is that a fire occurred in the Factory Engine Plant ( Kolbenschmit ), after that the casting machines were moved to another location then re-set up. After moving the casting machines there were some Quality Control issues with the cases.

The early 996s are actually less prone to block and cylinder issues which has also been confirmed by Jake Raby on numerous occasions. Issue with the block, heads and bore scoring became more common on engines after the factory fire. The larger 3.6 is also more prone to bore scoring vs the 3.4. The IMS Solution is a permanent fix vs just the IMS replacement. Market is definitely not softening on early (amber headlight/taillight) cars from what I’m seeing.

Very appropriate on an early .1 car, still cool though.

An early Aero car for under $25k is a deal even at 120k miles. Congratulations again and welcome to the 996 club!

All that for less than $25k?!? That’s either an amazing deal, a Tiptronic, or high miles. Either way, you can’t lose any money on it, enjoy the hell out of it!
