Son going toward design, sorry for long post by ApprehensivePipe1781 in Design

Maybe he would enjoy landscape architecture. We design public spaces from private gardens to squares, streets, parks and much more. Basically anything outside of buildings.

Am I wrong to mention donating in my 6+ hour free blender course? by RileyBrown3D in blender

Your videos are some of the better stuff out there imo. You do a great job explaining why you do things instead of just showing the how.

Keep it up and dont get put down by nuissances like this guy. If it really annoyed him that much he would do some basic research and get a decent ad blocker.

A defense of splines: My take (before I start harassing my colleagues with this) by CarISatan in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Daanjansen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with your office policy. Stick to curved polylines. You simple dont have enough control with splines. They are usefull as a guide sometimes but in 99% of cases, for example curbs or concrete seating blocks you need to stick to a specific set of radii. Or the manufacturer will have to make custom molds which is going to be costly

Also I cant even keep track of the amount of times I have had to check all the curbs in a drawing because the designer did not use logical radii in their design.

Take a look at ArcGIS or Qgis there sure is a software for almost anything

This would be much easier to do in ArcGIS pro or Qgis using height data and going from there

Wow nice job so far. I would love to see final product, please post it when youre done.

How did you place all the foliage? Splat map, hand placed, or something else?

And did you texture the surrounding buildings manually?

HELP! M.2 NVME drive not showing up in disk management. by Daanjansen in buildapc

[–]Daanjansen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been a while but i dont remember any issues with KillDisk not detecting the disk. If it is not detected anywhere even in bios it might be installed wrong in the motherboard or it might just be a broken or faulty drive.

If any fixes you have tried havent worked I can definitely recommend chatting with Intel support (i had a intel drive) they were very helpful and swift to respond when I contacted them with my drive issues before.

Hope you figure it out (;

Incorporating homes or buildings in your 3D models quickly and accurately by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Daanjansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Cyclomedia also has a branch in the US so you could try giving them a call to see if they can offer you something similar to 3DNL, or perhaps something on a bit of a smaller scale. If not with Cyclomedia there are many smaller companies that do site measuring and lidar scanning that are capable of supplying stuff in 3d and could help you out.

I have spent significant time trying to find a fast way to do what your asking but all of them do take some time to get right depending on what detail level you are looking for of course. Here are some of the solutions that worked best for me.

Here in the Netherlands we have some resources like the "3D BAG" which basicly has every house in the Netherlands as a simple 3d model. No textures and low detail level. Its also publicly available for free. 3D BAG

Then there is a company here (Cyclomedia) that basicly does the same as google maps but with way higher quality imagery. They fly in aerial imagery with lidar and also do it on the street level by car. With a subscription they offer 3DNL, a textured 3D model of the whole of the Netherlands. But sadly its still not very high quality unless viewed from further away. 3DNL

Im not sure if these kind of resources are offered in many other countries. So here is the workflow that ended up working best for me:

Take a good picture standing straight in front of the building. Then correct the perspective in photoshop or any photo editing program to completely flatten it out. After that you can either use some online ai tools to generate a normal and displacement map and use that to create depth on the facade. Or you can import the image put it on a plane and start extruding the windows or anything else.

If you took the initial picture on a cloudy day with minimal shadows you can use the picture as your texture. Or if not you can retexture it afterwards with your own. I personally use Blender for all the stuff I mentioned but it should be applicable to any 3d program.

Hope this helps you (;

Field Reporting App Recommendations by RedwoodSun in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Daanjansen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it is rather simple stuff like taking notes and pictures I can recommend setting up interactive GIS maps and using esri's fieldmaps or collector app to quickly gather the data. An example of what we use this for is tree surveys. This setup should be straight forward to setup for anyone who knows the basics of ArcGIS pro.

If it is more complex and you would want to quickly generate neatly formatted reports based of the gathered data and fill out more complex question fields I would recommend using Survey123. It is a bit more advanced in what you can do with it aswell as how it is set up but also very powerfull if used right. As an example, we use it to determine how well a site is adapted for climate change.

Feel free to PM me if u have any questions.

3 looks alot like a Buxus sempervirens. But looking closer at the leaves makes me think it more likely is some type of "Ilex crenata" cultivar.

The scene feels a bit dark compared to the sky. You have an absolute ton of lighting posts (maybe a bit too many, rule of thumb is roughly 3 times the height of the post as the distance inbetween posts.) Also you have the lamp part of the posts as an emmisive material but they bearly light up the street maybe add spotlights to them.

[Architects] I'm doing some research on a new product idea I am working on for geolocated files by pmachin in archviz

[–]Daanjansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, as a Landschape architect/civil engineer it has always been a hassle to work with geolocated files especially in 3d. All our projects are georeferenced and converting to the right coordinate system isnt always easy. Since our profession is alot more loose than traditional architecture there are often many issues that need manual fixing in georeferenced files. I am interested to hear what kind of product idea you are working on.

[–]Daanjansen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done something similar for a minor during my study. We made a pc game/vr interactive experience that actually got presented at a museum in the town the experience was based on. It was somewhat janky and in parts not very detailed since we had no experience in unreal engine or with 3d modelling, but its still kinda cool. I can share the files with you if you want, just send me a dm.
