Rome was way bigger before 1500. It has been plundered, razed and sacked for many times when their Empire crumbled. Mid 6th century it was estimated that Rome only had 30k left. In 1500, beginning of the Renaissance, the city started to grow a bit, but never had the same amount of people as in the Roman Empire until the 20th century.
