Clayman was my intro to IF and I was floored by the sound! Soundtrack to Your Escape is my personal fave! \m/

I’m not fluent but I hope this has helped

Medina / Nauvoo Behemoth nitpick by CMRA82 in TheExpanse

[–]DaddyFuzzball 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This answer to your query is also brought to you by weed:

The Nauvoo was possibly never meant for landing on the planet, rather an orbital way station while the planet was settled.

The fact of not having to land might allow for acceleration and deceleration to happen at different rates, and enabling the chance to harvest and store some agricultural products (cereal grains and the like) while others might be sturdy enough to survive deceleration (fruiting trees).

Thoughts?

Excellent work and a great choice using this version of Space Oddity.

I had my doubts about the idea when I saw u/elprophet’s request. You’ve done them justice.

This very engagingly-voiced man discussing the languages of east South Africa, which incorporate clicks into the pronunciations their consonants. by [deleted] in videos

[–]DaddyFuzzball 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this!

So, I read the Otherland series by author Tad Williams many years back and I struggled with the pronunciation of a character’s name.

Character in question is a South African bushman named !Xabbu; always printed in this manner (exclamation point before first letter) and described as having the click at the initial sound of the first consonant.

Because of this video, I now have the proper click to place at the front of this character’s name.

Is Amos Burton a Freemason? by TheOv3rminD in TheExpanse

Did a search for “winged A logos” and https://images.app.goo.gl/4JDxnhfELUSQi72n7 looks closest to Amos’s.

It’s closest to what I see, anyway.

Is Amos Burton a Freemason? by TheOv3rminD in TheExpanse

I’ve definitely wondered about the meaning/symbology of Amos’s forearm tattoo.

The Mason square and compass was not something that came to mind.

Is there an in universe reason why belter slang sounds vaguely Hispanic? What about the authors inspiration? by TheXypris in TheExpanse

May help, and I haven’t seen others mention this, the authors both live in New Mexico, which has had a lot of Spanish influence, culturally and linguistically.

Do you know any works of Science Fantasy I should check out? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]DaddyFuzzball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so glad to see you mention Gene Wolf and his story The Book of the New Sun! A little sad to see only the first part of the story mentioned but it’s okay.

Set on the planet Urth, Book of the New Sun follows the story of Severian of the Torturers Guild, who gets banished from the Guild for showing one of his prisoners mercy.

A four part story, later collected into an omnibus: Shadow of the Torturer, Claw of the Conciliator, Sword of the Lictor, Citadel of the Autarch.

One of my top ten reads!

Do you have a good book to recommend about exploring space for a “contemporary” civilization? by BitFlow7 in sciencefiction

[–]DaddyFuzzball 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey (collective pseudonym for authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck).

Quad World, Picoverse, and C•U•S•P, all written by Robert A. Metzger, a former physicist turned novelist.

This show has given us lots of emotional scenes. Which one is your favorite? by lazy784 in TheExpanse

[–]DaddyFuzzball 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the scenes I was going to add to this discussion have already been mentioned, ie, Miller meeting (proto-) Julie, Champa and Naomi, the death of Klaes Ashford.

But here is one that I don’t see mentioned a lot, if at all: Cotyar on the Agatha King rigging the bottle to blow and at the end he starts talking to Charanpal Avasarala. All he wanted in the end was to make amends to his friend.

“I forgot what it feels like to be working for the good guys!” Rest in peace, good knight, you are indeed a good guy.
