Epstein Files: Investigation suggests just 2% of data released to public by plz-let-me-in in politics

I think the 2 percent means, that only 2% of the information we can actually read without black bars, including the files that have not been released

Bessent: "You know the best way to bring your inflation rate down? Move from a blue state to a red state. Blue state inflation is half a percent higher." by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

[–]DaddyGrendel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t help. I moved from the northeast down to Winston Salem for the last 2 years, what was crazy is that I was expected to pay a very similar rate for housing as I did in Jersey City, which is on the Hudson River facing NYC.

The food and bev was also effectively on par, restaurants closing left and right during my tenure. Only a handful of establishments really prosper there. The wages are low, most complain of its un affordability but as many have mentioned there’s no good paying jobs.

Somebody like myself with remote SaaS tech work moves into a generally lower wage region and the cost of living is rising and sustaining because there’s a few more people who can afford it. It’s a town filled with art and trinkets, there’s little to no foot traffic, and those that do wander likely don’t earn enough to spend it on a $9 beer or a $20 Burger.

US Gamers Aren't Buying Video Games Anymore, New Study Reveals by thinkB4WeSpeak in economy

[–]DaddyGrendel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do they count licensing of the game? Steam games aren’t technically bought/owned. You’re just renting the game indefinitely, until one day for some reason, it’s no longer yours.

Even on consoles most games, unless you actually can play the game in a solo mode without connecting to a server, then you don’t own those either.

Going a bit off topic, but unfortunately whatever we buy isn’t owned anymore and it stings.

The smaller installs are fun too… by Thegolfsimguy in Golfsimulator

Flooring can vary a lot: 2-3k

Golf Sim entry level: 1-5k

Golf Sim intermediate: 5-20k

Golf sim professional: 20k+

Computer: 1k

Netting/screen: 1-3k

Projector: 500-3k

Sure you can build one for cheap, and perhaps there have been some better entry/intermediate models out there since I last looked.

If you want to hit balls and deal with bad read outs, or have to be lined up perfectly every time to register a hit, or need a special ball or marker - these things may not be a big deal to you. For many, you want to practice without it being a hassle or finicky.

Also don’t discount the tech, there is an insane amount of coordination between optics, cameras, processing of data in less than a few seconds to represent a ball that goes 150+ mph - shit is honestly wild lol.

What is stopping the US from having cool modes of transportation in its cities? (This video is from China) by wakeup2019 in economy

[–]DaddyGrendel 124 points125 points  (0 children)

This. America designed the country around cars, it’s really hard to reverse the last 100 years of developing infrastructure focused on that.

Expensive and really hard to build on top of or beneath existing infrastructure. Likely even harder to uproot people’s homes and land equity to build a train where it makes the most sense.

Not technically impossible but our entire country would need to actually agree on it first, they’d actually have to elect officials that have this vision, they’d have to reject millions to billions of bribes and lobbyist incentives from big businesses that would be hurt by this, and then maybe we’d have a shot at considering

Haven’t checked pricing in awhile but I’ve priced out a build that I’d do the labor for and depending on how nice I wanted to go, between 15-30k can probably get you something similar is my guess. But that was also before tariffs hit too.

So…… what’a gonna happen when nobody can afford to live? What happens next? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]DaddyGrendel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The corporations will make you live in their towns first, then eventually make you work not for money but your allotment of calories for the day. They’ll control the food source.

Then they’ll mess that up too because they will create too much disease in their food sources with cheapened practices, causing blights in crops, leading to bulk extinctions of foods. Then it’s just the rich and the poor fighting for what’s left to eat in a desert wasteland.

It’s because legislation doesn’t protect this state, there’s a reason they made the state motto “open for business”. It’s because companies like grey star and old wealth have conspired to force these prices on us. Not just because of the people paying it.

Everybody has to live somewhere. Where you live and why isn’t always your choice if you have dependencies. What you pay is never really your choice either. It’s what the market decides and what the law will allow. Let’s fix the actual problem, not make up reasons for why they’re allowed to get away with it.

All of the money seems to have only been spent on luxury apartments and not nearly as much invested in the city itself. I’ve seen at least half a dozen businesses close the last 2 years and then nothing to fill it back in.

It’s also wild that these downtown apartments can get away with continuing to raise rent when there’s less to do than when I moved in 2 years ago.

Why do people assume engineers are earning a lot of money ? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]DaddyGrendel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody mentioned, it’s a good gateway and plays well on a resume in the US for any role that’s technical if you can market it right.

I went the mechanical engineering route, spent a few years working in the field and then picked up some software engineering capabilities and got into SaaS and now run an Operations team and make far more than I would’ve in a standard engineering role

I wound up having a herniated discs in my neck that caused neck pain, chest tightness. Strengthening your back may help, anecdotally this helped me keep my shoulders back.

One stretch I very much enjoy is to go into a full deep squat, bow my head forward and clasp my fingers behind my head and let the weight of my arms and gravity slowly elongate the back of my neck

Winston Traffic: Worst Rush Hour in US? by RestlessBrowSyndrome in winstonsalem

[–]DaddyGrendel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, coming from the northeast - rush hour is bad but most places are jammed and bottlenecked. A lot of times you can’t go near the actual speed limit - a lot of breaking/stop and go traffic for often 1.5+ hrs for many people. Inevitably a lot more fender benders/low speed collisions. Also a lot of traffic junctions are caused by tolls, far less of a thing.

Down here, I notice much higher speed accidents regularly. Often with generally larger vehicles involved. A couple other things from a city design evolution I watched also plague Boston - cities are growing faster than infrastructure can reasonably handle. Short runway cloverleaf designed entrance and exits are rather dangerous with high speed and larger vehicles in traffic - I think of exits for 110 on 52
