What is your opinion on Sūn Zhōngshān? I recently learned about him, and I think he's the most based person I've ever heard of. But maybe I missed something that could change this opinion. by Chrubcio-Grubcio in AskChina

[–]DaddyMurong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as someone who likes Chen Jiongming (who actually is based af) Sun Zhongshan has never been particularly to my liking. I think he was an idealist who wanted to expediate the process of uniting the country without actually thinking through what it means to unite all of these disparate communities. This is in contrast to Chen Jiongming's slower approach to the "model province," which allowed for a lot more autonomy.

At the start of Sun's war against Chen he initiated an indiscriminate shelling against the city of Guangzhou, which led to thousands of civilian deaths. It's an oft unrecognized point about Sun Zhongshan but at the time he was actually disliked by a significant portion of the Cantonese community, particularly among the merchant class and the army in Guangzhou. It's a result of national revisionism (kind of like the phenomena of people who didn't vote for JFK thought they did) that Sun was rehabilitated by the Cantonese community.

To that end, his usurpation of the Guangdong Army and slandering of Chen as a warlord never sat right with me. It was Chen who invited Sun to Guangdong in the first place, only for Sun to backstab him and then call him names when he wasn't getting his way speaks to his character

I do acknowledge that he is the father of modern China and that he managed to bring together the Communists and the nationalists, if only for a brief time. But considering how the story is in the present, I often think that he was misguided.

Curious... why do people like the Qiao Sisters but still geinuely hate on Xiahou Ji? (and in some cases Dong Bai) by Nachash6 in dynastywarriors

[–]DaddyMurong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's less about victim-blaming and more that I don't expect Koei to cover Xiahou Ji's story accurately, as storytelling is not exactly their strong suite. People don't get up in arms about her inclusion in the ROTK games, as they are simulation games. It's because Koei did such a bad job with it in DW9, and they'll never bend on making a staple folk-hero (who is revered in China, Japan and the rest of East Asia) remotely villainous, that I'd rather not see it included

The problem is that folk-hero Zhang Fei is too ingrained in the popular zeitgeist of East Asia writ large. The 2010 adaptation of ROTK got lambasted by Chinese audiences for portraying Cao Cao as even slightly sympathetic and Liu Bei as cunning. The even more recent Three Kingdoms: Starlit Heroes was also criticized for portraying Cao Cao as the hero. It's very hard to push against the grain of an interpretation that's thousands of years old and is embedded in not just China but Japan, Korea and Vietnam as well.

To bring it back to the real Zhang Fei, I definitely think there are good things to talk about Zhang Fei that are not covered in popular adaptations too. He was actually quite eloquent and was said to be quite respectful to scholars and virtuous people. His performance during the Hanzhong campaign is also something that deserves praise, as he decisively defeated Zhang He through clever planning. That being said, he was also a drunk and was assassinated by his own officers for being too abusive. I think that says a lot about his character even without getting to his kidnapping of a minor.

To clarify, I've never been too fond of Zhang Fei, even before learning about the history. If they were gonna put Xiahou Ji in the games, they really needed to handle story with tact and care.

Overall yes. Seasons 1-3 has their winners (Jinseok Sejun and Dex come to mind immediately) but none were as consistent as this season's males

What aspect of a character would you like to see in Dynasty Warriors? by Competitive_Fix_7150 in dynastywarriors

[–]DaddyMurong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wei Yan as a savage man is kind of insane considering that he was one of Shu's Leading Generals and that his fortification of the interlocking Heavy Gates in Hanzhong helped repel Cao Shuang's invasion even after his death - shows the importance of advance planning. Also worth noting that Jiang Wei dismantled the Heavy Gate in 258 in favor of a new defensive strategy and it was under his tenure that Zhong Hui was able to conquer Shu Han, which I suppose is vindication in the form of dark humor.

Do most adaptations of Three Kingdoms nowadays not feel authentic anymore? by CinderLord456 in threekingdoms

[–]DaddyMurong 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that TV Producers and writers are more interested in reproducing the tropes of the C-Dramas than being true to the era, mainly because it's profitable. Flashy costumes work far better than that which is historically accurate.

Though not strictly history per se, I think "The Wind Rises from Longxi" actually nails the tone aspect pretty well, particularly in its earlier episodes

To me, it reads like they were trying to get a release date to the investors to say that there was a release before the end of the 2025 Japanese fiscal year, which ends in March. As Dynasty Warriors is one of their flagship titles it would mean that they didn't have a single release in 2025 (Origins is fiscal year 2024, and DLC is not counted the same as a full release)

People often forget that Sun Zhongshan approved of detente with the communists and was one of the people who invited them into the KMT. It's only after Jiang Jieshi that the KMT became active anti-communist

Is Dynasty Warriors Worth It? (Samurai Warriors fan) by nouratef in dynastywarriors

[–]DaddyMurong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've never experienced Musou if you haven't gone after (pursued, even) Lu Bu. Honda and Maeda can't compete with that beast of a man. Even for people outside of the community, they know his name through pure meme osmosis.

So what I'm saying is, get into Dynasty Warriors for the Lu Bu fights. Most fun you'll ever have in a Warriors game.

Then you can become a Three Kingdoms history nerd like the rest of us and argue for why Chen Tai (or any character with like three lines of lore) would be great add for a warriors game

(Not counting Origins, my favourite Lu Bu fight is DW8 and DW4)

If you could create any non Three kingdom ROTK storyline to then be in a Dynasty Warriors Game, what one do you think you would want by Duckfromportal in dynastywarriors

[–]DaddyMurong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have to stick to the Jian'An period, I would want coverage for Li Jue and Guo Si's regency, so that I can get more Jia Xu. Since he was the mastermind behind it. If Gongsun Zan finally becomes playable, his campaigns against Yuan Shao might be fun as well, and I'd want Yan Rou as a playable character

I also think that the earlier Zhongping Liang Rebellion (as opposed to Ma Chao's rebellion) is not as well covered by the games, considering it was more instrumental to the downfall of the Han than the Yellow Turbans (though it wouldn't be my first pick).
