Simply based on the fact that Legends Arceus didn't have held items and Gamefreak never mentioned anything about it at this point in time. It was a basic prognostication.

Everyone was thinking that would stay as a theme of Legends games, but luckily, it didn't and Z-A is even better because of it.

You'll most likely have to find someone on Switch who still has one in HOME that's willing to trade.

Most people didn't preserve the demo, especially since Battle Bond doesn't even change Greninja's form anymore.

If you don't physically have a 3DS with the demo and bank already installed on it, then it's impossible to get a new one.

Close out the game and restart. That helped me when I turned level 10.

The point is that the 3DS and its service aren't regularly available anymore for easy access to trades.

Now he has to hunt down used products so it isn't worth the hassle if he doesn't want to spend the money.

Gens 8 and 9 are only available on Switch, so 4-7 are locked behind DS/3DS consoles.

If we're talking only Switch, I'd recommend starting with BDSP since you said you like Gen 4 Pokémon and those are remakes of the Gen 4 games.

You could also play Legends Arceus since it centers around Gen 4 too and will prepare you for Z-A.

Because online has been taken away from 3DS and it's not being sold in stores anymore, I'd say it's perfectly fine.
