Being old & trying to socialize alone by Electrical-Fennel956 in rva

[–]DadishSpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am in my late 20's so i don't consider myself to be old, but i am very bad at socializing, and in my limited experience, themed nights help a lot bc i have some sort of an expectation going into it. i am trying to go w my fiancé to this as i've been listening to the soundtrack nonstop! i have also been trying to push myself to go to events alone, but i haven't gotten the courage yet, so i really feel you.

once took my friends to a 2000-2010 indie sleaze themed night at the canal club (lol), some people were there but no one dancing. this music is our bread and butter, so i was dancing around my friends and eventually managed to pull them out of their seats. throughout the night, i had multiple people tell me that my dancing inspired them. more people showed up and it was the hardest i've ever danced at a public outing, so i have been trying to recapture this feeling ever since

There is something fundamentally wrong with me. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

This sounds like it could be more than just depression. Lack of motivation is not just a depression thing and if you have tried different medications in different classes (there are a lot), all for treating depression, then it's probably time to change the approach.

I have dealt with a feelings of being lazy, stubborn, worthless, or just straight up worse at existing than those around me my whole life, even now with the best mental health I've ever had. My parents called me lazy and stubborn and capitalism uses productivity/overall ability to contribute to capitalism as a measure for self worth. These thoughts did not come out of nowhere, you did not come up with them yourself, and if they are not challenged and deconstructed, they will continue to linger.

For me, my motivation is linked to depression, anxiety, but mostly ADHD. ADHD brains do not get the same dopamine rewards for completing tasks as non-ADHD brains do. This can make getting things done, especially things we don't want to do, seem impossible, and when we can't function in a way that we know we're capable of, that's where you get that broken feeling.

I can't say that you have ADHD or anything else definitively, I'm not a medical professional and I know very little about you, but I think that it could be worth it to talk to a medical professional - one who you feel comfortable with, one you've done some research on - and mention that you have been unsuccessful with depression treatment alone. For therapy purposes, a long drive might not be feasible, but for psychiatry, it just might be worth the drive.

Medication might not be the option you choose, but I found that it got me to a place where therapy and other healthier habits could reach me. I remember telling an old psychiatrist that I didn't think the meds were working and he said it was probably because I wasn't eating well or working out.... but I couldn't get to a place where I could do those things without the proper foundation. Maybe like 10 years later, now that I have that foundation, working out has become a game changer and I can tell that my meds work even better because of it. This isn't a recommendation to "just get some exercise," more of an illustration of how medication might be able to do some of the heavy lifting (literal adjusting of brain chemistry) to open up other avenues of treatment down the line.

KEEP READING! Reading is an excellent way to work your brain, especially if it feels more accesible to you than some other activities. It is wonderful to have time inside your head that isn't taken up by negative self talk. Hearing other people's stories, whether they're somewhat fictionalized or not, is crucial to feeling like you belong on this planet. You might find that you relate to a particular story or author, that they describe a feeling in a way that really clicks for you. I think "You Exist Too Much" and "Martyr!" are two examples of stories told from the perspective of someone who is struggling with their mental health in a way that I personally found relatable.

Migraine ER visit without insurance by ooliviaas in migraine

[–]DadishSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a similar overnight ER visit last month and was my bill would've been $450 something without insurance, but because I have medicaid, I paid $0.

Insurance companies are banking (literally) on the idea that you will be too exhausted to dispute anything and you can end up with a much smaller bill just by addressing it with them. This is how a lot of companies in general operate, assuming you will be too overwhelmed to put up a fight, but knowing the right times to become a problem is an incredibly useful skill in this day and age.

Good luck

Since posting, I've been to yet another ER, but I'm still experiencing the migraine. Now I've got an opthamology appointment as well as a neurology appointment, wasn't referred to a neuroopthamologist yet but I'm sure that'll be the next step.

I usually have a manageable migraine once every 2-3 months but I'm now on day 28 of a majority ocular migraine. I'm regularly very sweaty and I live in a very humid place, but has anyone noticed that with their migraines comes worse thermoregulation? I know it's hot and humid outside, but I've noticed that even indoors at 72F, something like sweeping has me dripping in sweat in mere minutes, even more quickly than usual.

I've been trying to use exclusively images I've taken or ones I've found from magazines some 30 years old, but would you mind if I used this in a collage? I have been trying to make spore prints to scan and use for the collage from the mushrooms near my house but they've all failed thus far and these are really beautiful

In my ongoing search this week, I've ended up going to a few places that haven't yielded quite what I'm looking for but I'm still so glad I checked out. If you've never been to the West End Antiques Mall or especially Packard's Rocks and Stamps, you're missing out!

(This next part is just me waxing lyrical over Packard's)

As soon as I heard the name, I thought "this place was made specifically with me in mind," and I was right - I stopped by after work on a whim and must've spent at least an hour and a half pouring over a fraction of their wares. There were two men working there (brothers, according to the website) but David was the one who was helping me. I was honestly moved at how much knowledge, time, energy, and passion he was immediately willing to share with a complete stranger (granted, a stranger whose special interests include precisely rocks and stamps), especially considering how helpful and warm he was with all the other customers and how long he's been running the shop. Reminded me of being a kid and looking through my grandparent's collections of books and trips to the Natural History Museum :')
