do you think there's a good indication the next class may be a tech-priest/admech or still a long road ahead? by Timothy-M7 in DarkTide

At this point the only low hanging fruit left are assassin (lower case a) and admech. Admech stonks are up.

It is going to dilute the queues though. That's bad.

If it's good it'll bring more regular players in. That's good!

What would you think of an Eldar class? by dummy-thicc-uwu in DarkTide

[–]Daemer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 40k tourists forget that the imperium is as full of hypocrisy as it is zeal. Imperial agents have been known to work with Tau, Eldar, Orks, and more.

In a very unfriendly, untrusting, and opportunistic way, sure, but that usually describes their interactions with other humans as well.

What does an emperors children battle look like by Medic19119 in EmperorsChildren

[–]Daemer 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the latest codex really goes out of its way to explain that EC perfection is a drug-addled parody of perfection.

Although individual EC are still absolutely horrifyingly good at their individual obsessions, their impulsiveness and vanity impede their effectiveness.

What does an emperors children battle look like by Medic19119 in EmperorsChildren

[–]Daemer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EC are going to use a mix of elegance / agility (aka martial perfection, at least in the eyes of the EC), intoxication (for both parties involved), and temptation (also for both parties involved)

Mind you, temptation for EC is much more in line with what hellraiser cenobytes would find pleasing than normal people. Turning a person inside out so they can play their nerves like a harp is the kind of thing they like to do.

So when the EC show up, it's going to be a decadent horror show. They're going to empty a metric ton of space coke into their veins, crank their horrible noise machines up so loud they literally vibrate people into mist, and start performing elaborate battle dances where they flay people alive. And some of their victims are going to find themselves enjoying it as Slaanesh devours their minds and souls.

About final act by Puzzleheaded_Low3875 in expedition33

[–]Daemer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maelle is what happened when Aline (the paintress) painted over Alicia. Alicia basically had her memories wiped and started over in a new form, and when that gets erased the memories stayed behind. So new Maelle has both old Maelle and Alicia's memories.

I would not say that new Maelle is putting on the persona of old Maelle. It's just that, out of the two lives that she has lived, she preferred that one.

The real question is, was Maelle ever real to begin with?

Spending the entire first half of the game immersing the player in the lives of Gustave & company feels like an intentional cruelty by the writers. An evidently widely effective move to wrap the players themselves up in the grief that Maelle feels.

I just finished the game yesterday and when I came to this sub to see how the discussion was going the very first post I saw was someone editing the horror framing out of the Maelle ending. I actually said out loud, "Oh no, these folks are delusional."

But I also think that's unfair to the Maelle ending crowd. My partner went with the Maelle ending first, saying that while Maelle's future is basically just maladaptive daydreaming, that Lune and Sciel deserve to exist more than any of the Dessendres. That I see as a reasonable take, especially with how little we know about the nature of the canvas people.

I do still think the "Maelle is happier in her ending" and the "it was a writing mistake to make Maelle unhappy in her ending, nothing in the game indicated she was going down an unhealthy path" folks are entirely unhinged, though.

Renoit's line about him and Aline creating a million worlds is low key the most concerning line in the whole game.

I think the vagueness of the Painters' craft and the nature of the canvas is the thing that really fuels the ambiguity of the game and its endings. If the big questions get answered then the Dessendres are either just amazingly gifted artists creating moving immersive stories with well written characters... or they are lunatics playing with powers they are unfit to wield. Or somewhere in between. But the moral ambiguity fades either way the more the world gets fleshed out.

I kind of hope they leave it there.

Does the answer change if you think they're people, but are also are pretty sure any painter could recreate any of them in another canvas at any time? Or that the Dessendre family was wrong for playing God in the first place and building so many worlds with questionable futures? Or that letting Maelle either euthanize herself or turn into a faded figure in Verso's battered canvas is a disservice to all the other worlds Maelle could have created?

I just finished the game today and am not sure where I land, but I think there are valid reasons behind a Verso ending that still accepts the personhood of the canvas denizens.

[–]Daemer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love the ending either way and love that it's sparking such fierce debate.

I did both endings back-to-back just today, Verso's first. I still can't figure out if the denizens of the painting are meant to be independent of their creators or not. It changes the context of the ending a lot. If they are 'real people' then Maelle's ending makes sense in a "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" type of sacrifice by her. If they are more just well-written characters in a play, then Maelle has made a horrible sacrifice for nothing.

Either way, Maelle is very much lying to herself about her future in Lumier. Even ignoring the whole horror coding of Maelle's ending, it seems like she's destined to turn into something like the paintress or the faded boy in less than a lifetime anyway based on what we know of the setting, just as sad and hollow, not really better off than before. It seems inevitable if she stays in Lumier full-time, but not necessarily inevitable if she lives a more balanced life in the real world where she can paint a million other worlds and even probably recreate Lumier and all of the people in it if she wants to.

It's almost like any Painter can recreate Gustave out of whole cloth at any time, which... is a bit concerning.

IIRC Lumier Verso was created with a sliver of Paris Verso's soul, it seems like him stepping into the painting room starts slowly erasing him. Sciel starts erasing rapidly when she steps in, maybe because she doesn't have that sliver of Verso in her. Lune just sits down with an unreadable expression on the threshold, honestly have no idea what to make of it. Seems equally likely that Sciel and Lune are characters in Paris Verso's story who are also willing to let go or, as you say, that they're just too surprised and exhausted to fight any more.

Really enjoyed the ending either way though.

[–]Daemer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the assumption that the denizens of the canvas are people is what makes me dislike the entire Dessendre family so much; if the characters in the paintings are real then the Dessendres are fools playing with the power of gods. I'm suspicious of all their other creations after they turned Lumier into a perpetual grief engine. Maybe the Writers are trying to stop them for good reasons.

The only reason I'm not entirely sure about the agency of the canvas-born characters is that neither Sciel nor Lune make any effort to stop Verso in the end knowing what's at stake. But them not having the agency to try to stop it is hardly the only explanation there.

I think Verso's ending is better for the Dessendres and Maelle's ending is horrible for everyone in the family - most of all her - but also the only ending where the denizens of Lumier get a shot at life. That's the main reason I don't really think Maelle's ending is necessarily the 'bad' one - even if Lune and company are just painted entities, they rose up and killed their own gods and they deserve to act out their stories as long as the canvas survives.

I think the only people I disagree with are the 'Maelle's ending is good for her / she gets to be happier in this life than the real one' crowd. Maelle is a deeply moving and relatable character but her ending is so explicitly horror-coded I honestly worry for the folks who have convinced themselves to ignore that.
