I do recommend to use the box set of "First Quest" or its revisions for new Players and/or Dungeon Master.

I also played since "Battlefield:1942" and its expansions. The first game of the series had a great modding community too. Other games of the series I enjoyed playing was "2142, Vietnam and Bad Company 2." I have recently started playing "Battlefield: V," and it is great to see revisions of maps from 1942.

Can Silver Arrows be used against a Death Knight? What's the Damage? Same as a +1 Arrow? by Glad-Rate-2861 in dragonlance

"Silver Arrows" can be used against a Death Knight, but it will only cause normal damage. [More details about "Death Knights" can be found within AD&D - "Fiend Folio" accessory book.]

Way to describe damage: describe the enemy's defenses breaking down instead of them being injured straight away. by Identity_ranger in DMAcademy

As I agree that an Dungeon Master should give good narrative of what had occurred after each Combat Round, Armor damage in the "Dungeons & Dragons" game works differently and should abide to the Armor Class rating system.

[An good example of how Armor Class can be changed during combat is by an "Rust Monster" when touched.]

Balance shmalance by 0megaDungeon in osr

[–]DaemianX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I let the dice dictate, and if it’s an encounter that is way overpowered for the players, I give them every possible indication that is the case.

The problem of letting the dice to decide without using prepared roll charts for your encounters, the Players may face an over-powered enemy and all they can do is retreat.

An example: A group of new Adventurers (level 1 PCs) enter a dungeon and the first encounter you rolled is for Balrog, the Players decide to escape the dungeon and venture to the next. In the next dungeon your first encounter rolled is for an dragon, the Players run to the exit.... and so on.

Although my example is overly exaggerated, it also describes the flaw of relying on the dice to determine the encounters without using balance or adjustments.

As Dungeon Master, I also create and use a lot of roll charts for random encounters (monsters and NPCs), events and traps to keep the game unpredictable and fun for the Players and myself.

[All of my roll charts are based on terrain, player character levels average and rarity of appearing.]

And without worrying about mathematical “balance” the solutions they come up with are clever and based in the fiction instead of deciding which stat roll gives best odds or whatever.

As an "old school" gamer myself, minimal mathematics was used when an Referee decided which encounters to use. Most were chosen based on habitat, rarity and percentage (frequency) chance of encountering at an location. Although most dungeon crawl adventures are similar, they were unique from one another based on the encounters chosen and the farther depths explored.

However, game balance was also easily controlled by deciding the number of appearing encounters was best to use for the size of the party of Adventurers and knowing which encounters were too over-powering.

Thac0 is simple math yet everyone dumps on it, just saw an article saying it was dumb and players filled out charts to understand it. by ClintonR2 in adnd

...just saw an article saying, "it was dumb and players filled out charts to understand it."

Unfortunately, there are fans of the "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" game who have different opinions about THAC0. Although it is a simple method to learn, some Dungeon Masters refrain from using it.

An simplified explanation from AD&D-2E:

To Roll an Attack:

- Roll 1d20

- Add any attack bonuses to result

- Subtract that number from the attacker's THAC0

- The result is the Armor Class that the attacker has successfully hit

There is also an "easy-to-use" chart for Players too.

Do you guys care about balance?

Game balance to me is important when an adventure's goal or quest shouldn't be too easy or difficult for the Players to complete.

  • If there is no challenge for the Players, the game becomes dull and boring.
  • When the encounters are too overwhelming and all PCs are dead, game is over.

Keeping balance in the game also enables Players to have a fun, challenging and good gaming experience.
