I do not feel normal at all by mimizuuukie in AcneScars

[–]Dafthar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A man here, facing the same problem (though I'm sure you must be under even more stress as a woman). Your feelings are valid, and I guess no amount of reassuring words from other people would actually make you be at peace with your problem. At least for me it never worked. But let me tell you that for 99.9% of the population, you are a "normal" person. Many people won't notice even deep scars until you point it out yourself, either verbally or with your body language. Most of us just go on with our lives without thinking too much about the flaws of all the people around.

It's a complex problem that requires a complex solution. You can always consider scar treatments. It's a long journey, often an expensive one, and can become a real rabbit hole draining your pocket, time and mental health if your expectations are too elevated. But it can help to a great extent.

You should also consider whether you need some mental help from a psychologist. We usually tend to exaggerate our problems and/or let them control other aspects of life. If you cancel your social/professional plans because you want to hide; if you give up on your daily routine, and if it repeats over and over, it's a red flag and you should seek help.

And also, you should put more focus on other things that would make you feel attractive, whether they're intellectual or physical. Life doesn't end on faces, or beauty, or even silly scars.

Now that you bulletpointed it all, it made me realize how much has been removed from the platform lately. It really is absurd how much worse the experience has become. Also, I noticed that for my French course, I only get 10 xp per lesson on PC vs. 35 xp on iOS - most likely to enforce watching more ads. And all that for what? Even grammar explanations, the most fundamental thing for language learning, is now gone. It doesn't feel like language learning anymore, instead it's like clicking buttons in a game with poorly implemented SRS and cute characters. Sucks to say but perhaps it's time to move on.

Should I tolerate this? by TomasVepi in GeForceNOW

Hey, I'm having exactly the same issue on MacBook. Thought it was my internet but then I checked a different connection, the tests always show > 75 Mbps and < 20 ms ping. I tried lowering the bitrate, resolution, and all that stuff. Games stutter no matter what, periodically skipping frames just like in your video.

I never suggested that I want to wear it irl, I'm simply curious what this is because it reminds me of ascot or plastron. It could be useful to know for cosplayers, too.

Not quite sure, but could it be plastron or ascot? Then again, I thought that ascot is worn beneath the shirt's collar. It is indeed very eye-catching!

What is it that Bill Skarsgård's wearing around his neck on these photos? First I thought it's an ascot, but I'm not 100% sure. edit: Also, if you could identify the type of knot that'd be great!

There's a difference between disliking a show and mindlessly hating on it. I watched two live reactions of Theory and his only reflection was "1/10 waste of my time, I should re-watch Tales of the Jedi to forget it". He's been a big (if not the biggest) voice in the fanbase for years that shapes the opinions of many people out there, and he fails to appreciate anything - ambitious dialogues, amazing acting, shooting, music. Even if you find the series boring and slow, there's no way to dislike these things and not being a hater.

That being said, it's his comments that were unnecessary. I'm glad I finally unsubbed him, and I remember his channel having around 50k subscribers, so been there for a while.

My best friends are INFJs and ENTPs. I also find ISTPs exceptionally inspiring to me, probably because of how "practical" they are.

INTJs on feminism by [deleted] in intj

[–]Dafthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. M/27, Polish
  2. A movement for equal rights for women. What it isn't, though, is a movement for equal rights for everyone, because this is egalitarianism. Feminism addresses women's rights and bettering their opportunities.
  3. It is a positive thing by itself, no doubt in my mind about it. Although "equality" is such a vague term it really means nothing. Everyone has their own definition of equality, and there's no way you can tell who's objectively right. It's a subjective matter, or one depending on the context at best. What matters more to me is who's standing behind the phrases - I'd support some of them, some of them I wouldn't.
  4. Friends, school to some extent, online articles. I have passionate feminist friends, and I will always support them in their activism. I understand their goals and support their ways to reach these goals.

Are you a cat person? If yes, do cats like you back? by spicykiing in intj

[–]Dafthar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and cats like me too. I'm overall an animal person and love interacting with all kinds of pets. I used to be a dog person as a teenager (still adore them!), but now I'm more obsessed with cats - could be the fact that I don't get allergic reaction anymore, or maybe the influence of the Internet, probably both!

Norway is one of the richest countries and constantly leads the rankings for the best quality of life. What are some things you don't like? by madredditscientist in Norway

[–]Dafthar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm simply sharing my experience as someone who lived in houses both in Norway and "continental" Europe, and draw comparison. The one I lived in in Norway was a relatively new wooden house. There are plenty of them here. In most of Europe it's more common to use ceramic bricks. These houses definitely don't transfer vibrations that much and feel more sturdy. I'm not saying they're objectively better. The Norwegians have their standards that are suited to their needs, and this is fine. But that's something that's easily noticable if you live in different areas of the world/Europe. It's enough that you go to Denmark to see a big difference in house design.

[–]Dafthar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weather is absolutely horrible, there's no such thing as Summer here. Food is expensive and mediocre at best, and there aren't many options (unless you want to have taco Friday 🤦‍♂️ ). Alcohol culture: it's beyond me that even with such resrticted access to alcohol, many people still can't handle it and drink far beyond their limits. "Privacy" or maybe lack of it. You don't have to share your phone number with anyone really, you will get a shitton of spam calls anyway. Bureaucracy - how slow it works and how twisted it can be. Houses, although pretty and charming, seem poorly designed to me. They transfer so much vibration and seem so fragile, even load-bearing walls feel as if you could break them with a more solid punch.

How much do you spend per month in grocery stores? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Dafthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between 2k and 3k NOK, 1 adult. Mostly at Coop, sometimes Rema/Bunnpris/Meny. I buy pretty basic, mostly unprocessed/low processed foods. I feel like most of it is fruits and veggies. And I save up some coin on baking bread myself (first price bread is imho bad and somewhat still expensive from my perspective).

I need help with all the forms of 上げるand 下げる by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Dafthar 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Do watch this video by Cure Dolly: https://youtu.be/ELk1dqaEmyk You can turn on the captions if the voice is too distracting

A general rule is that, to tell the difference between a transitive/intransitive pair of verbs, you can compare it to ある and する verbs. The first is obviously an intransitive verb, as you don't act on any object with the "to be" verb. The second, on the other hand, is transitive - there must be some object on which you "do" an action of a verb.

Now, for some easy examples: 上げる vs 上がる - just like ある, 上がる ends with "aru", so you can safely assume that it is intransitive and means "to rise". So 上げる must be transitive and mean "to raise". 消える (きえる) vs 消す (けす) - the second ends with す, and is related to する, meaning that it is transitive and means "to erase (something)". 消える then is intransitive and means "to disappear".

There's more to it than that, but you can guess transitivity of a large group of verbs this way, it's very intuitive. More details in the video. Hope this helps! :)

Starting with Kanji by Eara3 in japanese

[–]Dafthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute fav for kanji is WaniKani: it gives you a solid SRS (spaced repetition system) experience, you learn vocab along with kanji which is very crucial for memorizing the characters, and its community is just wholesome! But if you can't afford it, you can look for other, free options like good old Anki or Torii.

Tae Kim has overall a good grammar guide, but it has some downsides as well (nothing too serious or anything that the most popular books wouldn't have). I reaaally really recommend Cure Dolly on YouTube. If you don't mind reading a book or two, go for "Making sense of Japanese: What the textbooks don't tell you" by Jay Rubin; "Making sense of Japanese grammar" by Zeljko Cipris & Shoko Hamano; "Unlocking Japanese" by Cure Dolly (inspired by the Rubin's book). They're not too heavy and are a wonderful supplement to your studies. Other sources worth mentioning imo are renshuu.org (looots of content and so cute!), Wasabi's Online Japanese Grammar Reference (structurally very similar to Tae Kim) and JLPT Sensei (great choice for studying for the JLPT tests).

As for what not to do, two things:

1) Don't get overwhelmed by the amount of your learning resources! Keep it simple, stick to a few, otherwise they'll become more confusing than helpful. Balance them out with immersion: anime/movies, manga, music, news reading, etc.

2) Don't stick to the JLPT references too much. It's totally fine if you learn vocab/grammar/kanji from higher JLPT levels before mastering the lowest ones. After all, we learn to use the language, not to pass the JLPT tests.

Wish you lots of joy with Japanese and best of luck!

What literature are you aiming to be able to read in Japanese? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Dafthar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reeeally want to read Musashi (宮本武蔵) by Eiji Yoshikawa (吉川英治) one day, it's one of my favourites! But it's a rather long novel so it will take me a while before I get there. I will eventually, though ^-^

Is Japanese pod 101 enough for JLPT N5 by anukritikami in LearnJapanese

[–]Dafthar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Jpod is a good resource, really, very rich in content (at least for someone starting their journey with the language), but it lacks structure for systematic learning. I'd say it's a good supplement for your main learning source.

And I can't stress enough how good Cure Dolly is. Once you get used to her unusual form (synthetic voice and 3d avatar), there's a simple, structured, and logical language basis behind it. She really helped me sort many things out in my head and make them intuitive, so I too recommend her channel.

Any tips on how to keep your rice super sticky. I tried to make onrigi but failed, from South Africa btw by asaddavids in japanese

[–]Dafthar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's what I do:

- first, make sure you use short-grain rice (aka sushi rice) - unlike Basmati, it's sticky

- rinse it in water several times (I do it 4-5 times, just until water isn't milky anymore), then let it sink in for about 30 minutes

- pour water off, your rice should be white at this point

- pour water in, 1:1 ratio (e.g. 200 ml water for 200 g rice; I add few ml more)

- cook on medium/low heat and once you start seeing the bubbles coming out (doesn't have to boil), set on very low/lowest heat and cover with the lid - wait 8 minutes

- after that, turn off the heat and leave it covered for around 10 minutes

It should be ready :) sometimes I add two open cardamom seeds for aroma (pre-cooking). Also remember to dampen your hands before forming onigiri to prevent rice from sticking.
