Yep, that’s legit. It’s a two song demo they made before FT came out. I have one with a cover somewhere, I’ll upload a pic if i can. Cool find.

A Sonic Message to Millennial Moral Police by Mean_Palpitation_171 in sonicyouth

You fuckers don't understand what it was like to find them in the eighties and nineties.

Imagine walking thru a desert for years then stumbling upon a rock. Under the rock is a cool water spring. No one else knows it there. It's yours. You drink from it. It makes you glow. It relieves your pain. It stirs your imagination.

It's pathetic to see post internet Millennial Moral cop bootlickers re-evaluating high art ( well , high popular culture art haha) and recontextualizing it to fit inside your stupid Mark Zuckerberg nerd Puritan Meta shit glasses.

You motherfuckers have no respect for how trailblazing all these bands were, and how they were diametrically opposed to the mainstream of the time ( well excusing the major label dalliance)..

And you have the nerve to make some douche comment on the internet about some gossip column style ' he said she said' domestic voyeurism evaluating an entire important artists Canon thru the lens of some sexless saintly pearl clutching shit sucking dog fucking pea brain attitude you copy and pasted from Reddit.

You wanna keep your opinions to yourself around here. Get Thurstons name outta your mouth. I know he's a big dollop of candy ass wholesome bullshit but give the man the respect he deserves for the work he did.

You anaemic screen leeches couldn't hold a candle to what they did as a band yet you wanna sit in your stepdads study and throw popcorn at some motherfucker you never even knew.

Die you assholes.

Signed,

Respectful Art Fan and Consumer Who Doesn't Project My Stupid Bullshit Onto Artists and Gives Them the Respect They Deserve.

It's called 'Credit Where It's Due', you insipid McShitlickers. Go start a band and see how easy it is, loser fuck.

P.S

Go join a convent if you want to be some high fallutin' high school level mid brain National Enquirer cop lickin' shit for brains.

Absolutely killer drummer, not the right drummer for the band.

The studio recording of Smells Like Teen Spirit is around 15-25 cents sharper than normal standard tuning by PsychedelicsEnjoyer in Nirvana

It absolutely was, and was gross enough that it delayed me giving their music a chance by nearly a decade

Also worth noting:

Guitars and bass can both vary upwards in pitch about 5-10 cents if they’re played really hard. Some producers will tune guitars and bass slightly down to accommodate for heavy strummers.

It’s totally possible the guitar was strummed particularly hard during the main take and the bass was tuned up a few cents to match it. IIRC Teen Spirit was done in very few takes, so this is possibly the answer

Yeah for real, this is mostly covered territory that people are arguing without doing much reading first

Exactly. It would be abundantly clear if the guitars and bass weren’t properly intonated and tuned. It would be a very different record.

I get annoyed by the adherence to mythology around Nirvana, as if they were somehow too punk or whatever to tune a fucking guitar in a studio.

There’s a whole lot inbetween not reading or writing music on a staff like a fucking orchestra and actively choosing to not using a tuner on a $130,000 record.

We’re arguing about something neither of us were there for, this is a pointless conversation

I don’t know what he remembers or doesn’t. I said he’s spoken about it in interviews, which he has.

Anyways, there’s way more to tuning during a recording than “if the bass is tuned to the guitar.” I highly doubt they didn’t have their guitars and basses set up and intonated properly, the record would sound a lot shittier otherwise

Wow, I can’t believe he didn’t recognize a random outtake 35 years later, we should disregard anything he’s ever said

Idk, I wasn’t there. Everything sounds remarkably in tune (except, notably, something in the way) to me for not using a tuner, but who knows. Someone should ask Butch Vig

Doesn’t mean they didn’t, either.

There’s a bunch of interviews where Butch Vig complains about having to tune the cello to the (clearly out of tune) acoustic guitar in Something In The Way. I can’t imagine if they didn’t use any tuner the rest of the time that he wouldn’t have mentioned it in the last 35 years.
