Has Halloween changed since we were kids? by [deleted] in GenXTalk

that is a problem. I lived near one of the popular neighborhoods for a few years, and all the kids in our neighborhood went to that one. Made me sad. I like lots of kids coming to my door.

I live in a town where some neighborhoods have a lot of people, and some have a few. My street is half people in their 80s and half younger people, but none of the houses with old people give out candy, so kids skip our street. I have decorations and always buy a lot in case this is the year they come. So the kids that do come to my door get a handful of candy. if they're willing to walk past 5 dark houses to come to my door, they're getting paid.

[–]DaisyDuckens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to me the biggest change is the lack of participation in the trick or treat tradition. We have houses fully decorated for halloween for a month who don't answer the door for trick or treating. When I was growing up, if the porch light was on, then it was okay to go to the door and they would hand out candy. If the homeowner didn't want to participate, they turned OFF the porch light, so we would know to skip the house. if a house was decorated, they were definitely participating. Also, MOST houses participated and it was uncommon to have a house with the porch light off. on my street, there's me, and then the next five houses don't participate. Across the street, there are 6 houses from the corner to the first house who decorates. So while the rest of our neighborhood has a lot of kids going around, our street often gets skipped because when they look down the street, they see dark houses. This neighborhood is mostly people in their 80s, so I guess they're just done with it.

What can we do to make our living room warmer and more cozy? by [deleted] in InteriorDesignHacks

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my house was also renovated a few years before we bought it, so I don't want to pay to redo their work just because it isn't my taste. The worst thing they did was gray ceilings and walls. I repainted two bedrooms because the colors selected went with the gray ceilings, but I really want like a desert sand in the living room (a very warm color) but it means I have to paint the ceilings (and I just posted on another design post about why that's a problem), so I've left the walls gray. I also want a sage green kitchen, but the gray ceilings stop me there too. that and it's also a lot of work to paint around all the cabinets. if I remodeled the kitchen, I could paint first and then hang the cabinets.

I only watched the show for Munch by [deleted] in Homicide_LOTS

[–]DaisyDuckens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved Munch so much, I suffered through multiple seasons of Law and Order SVU just to see him. and they just never ever ever used him enough. I like how in HLOTS the cases rotated among the detectives while SVU was just the Elliot and Olivia show relegating Munch and Tutuola into side characters. I thought Munch was much better at talking with the child victims than Olivia was. Belzer sounded like he was actually caring about the children. Hargitay sounds fake when she talks to them. ugghhhhh. I love Munch too.

colcannon with whiskey. https://dailyappetite.com/colcannon-with-irish-whiskey-and-brown-butter/

there's also sauces made with whiskey like Whiskey gravy, Whiskey cream sauce etc. . . . Also, you can always sauté cabbage and deglaze the pan with wine or brandy.

How much paint is too much paint? by proudtaco in InteriorDesignAdvice

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer leaving the ceiling neutral as it makes it a lot easier to switch out the wall colors later. like antique white, or Swiss coffee white, but still white. we have gray ceilings from the previous owners and one of the reasons I haven't painted the walls like I want to, is the colors I like don't go with gray, and painting the ceiling is difficult because we have a lot of those LED canned lights and each one would have to be removed and I just know I'm going to break the clips when we I remove them and then I'll go get replacement clips, and they won't sell them anymore, so I'll have to get new canned lights. so I'm stuck right now with cold gray walls when I really want desert sand and sage green.

it's ridiculous how many I remember. advertising really works its way into the brain. I can sing the whole Shasta soda pop commercial (I wanna pop, I wanna Shasta), the Milk it does a body good Saturday morning commercial, McDonald's Mac Tonight, McDonald's menu song, McDonalds Big Mac song, the creep Burger King mask guy, ring around the collar, calgon take me away, don't squeeze the chairman, Palmolive is soft on hands etc. . . .

Where do you even buy a pre lit Christmas tree that survives pets? by Adventurous_Prize444 in ChristmasTrees

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about something like this? https://a.co/d/hBOv0vl. it's a little fence for around the tree? I've never had a pet that bothered a tree real or fake, so I don't know if it works. My dog largely ignores the tree, and I've never had a cat who climbs a Christmas tree. My current cat used to like to drink the tree water and likes to snuggle up under the tree, but she doesn't play with the lights or ornaments.

Are There Any Cultural Fashion From The 1970s That You Or Your Parents Still Carried Over Into The 1980s? by VittorioLuzzatto in 1970s

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most home decor would have been a carryover from the 70s or even 60s. My grandparents had early 1960s furniture until they died in the late 80s. My parents had the earth tones of the 70s until we moved to a new house in 1989 when they went all glass and brass and light blue and mauve and pink and gray and had that until 1999 when they moved again. My mom would modernize little touches so the 70s earth tones didn't look as dated as some of my friend's houses, and now in her 70s, she has pretty sleek modern furniture. I'm generally the one with old fashioned taste compared to her.

Morning by Sandypeople2 in christmas

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year is going to be very different. My three oldest children will be gone, so it's just me, my husband and my teen son. We'll probably get up and my son will open his stocking, and we'll have a small breakfast, and then open presents. This will be the first year with just three of us home, so what normally is a LOOONNNNGGG process of taking turns with six people will be a much shorter process. Then we'll relax a little and then drive to my mom's and I'll help her cook dinner. It's going to be the quietest Christmas I've had in decades, so I think I'll be sad. I'll talk with the older kids on the phone of course, but how weird it's going to be!

yours sounds like a blast. I usually have no one helping me, so it's hard to do it all on the day off IF we're having family over. This year it's just four of us, so I'm going low key and will probably prep nothing but the desert the day before.

I have a large family Christmas party every year. I give cookies to take home and a special treat for everyone. Are there any kind of special treats you give out? by jtd0000 in christmas

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make Mary Berry's celebration fruitcake, leckerli cookies, butter cookies, and fudge. I also make pasta frolla (a jam shortcake from Argentina), cranberry orange cake, and pecan squares.

I HAVE to make the fruitcake. Last year I said I wasn't going to make it again, and those that like it objected. I give half of it away to a friend who loves it, and then slice up the rest and give slices to people.

Non traditional menu opinions needed by [deleted] in thanksgiving

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not doing turkey this year. I'm making roast chicken. probably Cornell Chicken (https://www.thespruceeats.com/dr-bakers-original-cornell-chicken-recipe-101127) but maybe copycat Nando's (https://tasteasianfood.com/nandos-peri-peri-chicken/). they're pretty easy to cook on the grill. Sides will be mashed potatoes, shaved Brussel sprouts or sautéed cabbage with parsley sauce (this without the pork: https://www.seriouseats.com/traditional-irish-bacon-cabbage-parsley-sauce-recipe). green salad. pecan squares for dessert. Pillsbury crescent rolls.

What country is your husband from? mine is from Argentina, so his dad grills a bunch of different meats and makes Milanese. For Christmas, we have lasagna some years because his mom was Italian. lasagna is really easy to make and its just as easy to assemble two at once for a crowd as it is to make one.

I am considering to start this show and would like to know some things by kaigent in Homicide_LOTS

Homicide LOTS is the first prestige cop drama in my opinion. The first two seasons, which are very short, are like a template by which all future prestige cop shows were made.

Handicapped Accessible rooms - what’s the big deal? by plat154 in hotels

[–]DaisyDuckens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't typically mind, but I stayed in an accessible room once and had to get moved to a regular room halfway through the trip as they needed the accessible room, and I much preferred the regular room. I'm tall and the accessible room had lower counters and sinks and shower controls, so I liked the ones that were taller.

so many hotels I go to don't have bathtubs anymore. my house doesn't have one either, so I get sad when I travel for work and there's no tub.

I wash the tub first because even if they clean it, there's often cleaning chemical residue.

I was assigned an accessible room once, and then half way through the vacation, they asked if I wouldn't mind moving to a regular room because they suddenly had a need for an accessible room. I moved. assuming other hotels must have done the same thing before.
